Force Philosophy I
Basic Views and Ideals
1. Introduction
Greetings students and welcome to Force Philosophy I. This course aims to help you attain a better understanding of the Nature of the Force by teaching you different aspects of the Force, including philosophical views and enhancing one’s connection to the Force.
Some say the Force controls us, while others state the opposite. In a weird twist of reality, both of these facts are true. It is indeed possible to have a certain degree of control over the Force, if not we wouldn’t be able to wield it. But also, the Force can control us. This is especially true in those who adhere to their emotions, to the so called Dark Side of the Force. It is in fact possible to become a slave to the Force. Take, for instance, Darth Nihilus, who became a slave to his desire to become more powerful.
What is the Force? While debates as to its nature are numerous, the fact that the Force exists can not be disputed. In its broadest sense, the Force is an energy field that flows through all living things, which is why it is important for a Jedi, or Dark Jedi, to learn all he can about it.
2. Using the Force
2.1. Terminology
2.1.1. Force Sensitivity
Even though the Force flows through all beings in this Galaxy, only a few are Force Sensitive. This Sensitivity to the Force is measured in Midi-Chlorians (see 2.2 for more on Midi-Chlorians). The higher a being’s Midi-Chlorian count, the higher his Sensitivity to the Force. A being with a high enough Force Sensitivity will be able to learn how to access the Force and use it in certain ways, the Jedi and Sith Sects are made up of beings with this ability. The theoretical border on when a being’s Sensitivity to the Force is high enough to be able to access the Force is traditionally set at 5,000 Midi-Chlorians per cell. Anything above this Ôborder’ constitutes as Force Sensitive WITH the ability to use it, anything below 5,000 constitutes as Force Sensitive WITHOUT the ability to use the Force. In most works, a being with <5,000 Midi-Chlorians per cell will be denoted as being Non-Force Sensitive even though their Midi-Chlorian count is high enough to allow them to have a presence in the Force. For the duration of this course I will use Force Sensitive as +5,000 Midi-Chlorians per cell and Non-Force Sensitive as Ð5,000 Midi-Chlorians per cell.
2.1.2. Force Potential
Even though their Midi-Chlorian count per cell is too low to allow for manipulation of the Force, Non-Force Sensitives and Force Sensitives both have a Force Potential, i.e. they both have the Force running through them. This means they are detectable to skilled Force Users through the Force, they leave a presence, as it were, in the Force.
Force Potential is the natural affinity of every living being in this Galaxy towards the Force. It is one of the best arguments towards the belief that the Force is “An energy field that permeates all living matter and connects us all” and that the Force isn’t just there for those who can utilise it. As stated before, this allows us to indirectly see/detect living organic beings through the Force, while we are unable to detect droids.
2.1.3. Force Blindness
Force Blindness is not a natural occurrence, rather it is a conscious manipulation by a being. Force Blindness must be caused, whether by conscious act or in repressing a traumatic event. To a Force Sensitive it feels similar to losing a limb or sense, while to a Non-Force Sensitive it can hide them from detection by Force Sensitives.
Scientifically there has been little to no research performed in this field of study. However we can theoretically state that it is the ability to disconnect one’s Midi-Chlorians from the Energy field known as the Force, this would mean that the Force will no longer flow through them and that therefore the Force will simply move past the entity in question as if it wasn’t there (similar to the Yuuzhan Vong).
While we don’t have any empirically tested knowledge on this technique or state of being, we do have several case-studies on them.

Case Study 1: In 25,200 BBY, the Rakatan Species lost their connection to the Force due to a mutation of a deadly plague. This is the only known case of a disease capable of destroying Midi-Chlorians and also the only known example of a Biological agent causing Force Blindness.
Case Study 2: In 3,996 BBY, Ulic Qel-Droma is stripped of his ability to access the Force by Nomi Sunrider in punishment for his actions as a Sith Lord. This also made him undetectable through the Force to others. Ulic did not have any adverse physical effects caused by the execution of this punishment which seems to imply that the technique does not harm a person but simply works on the Midi-Chlorians themselves.
Case Study 3: In 3,960 BBY, one of Revan’s Jedi Generals shows us it is also possible to blind oneself to the Force. The future Jedi Exile cut herself off from the Force in order to survive the Cataclysmic Victory of Malachor V with her sanity intact. This event sent out a veritable shockwave through the Force across the Galaxy and only by cutting herself off did she survive the event.
Case Study 4: In 22 BBY, Callista Ming loses her physical body onboard the Eye of Palpatine. Her mind will remain in the computer systems for thirty years and when she regains a body in 12 ABY she will come to the conclusion that she can no longer access the Force, aside from when her anger overpowers her and she uses the Dark Side. This is a case of Force Blindness due to trauma. Most likely her death, coupled with the death of the body of Cray Mingla and her possession of said body could have caused this to occur.
2.1.4. Force Nullification

Then we come to Force Nullification, I do not point towards the various drugs, devices, etc. that could be used to dampen a Force Sensitive’s access to the Force. I point towards beings that nullify the Force. The most common example of this are the Ysalamiri of Myrkr. These Furry, Lizard-like Tree-dwellers are most renowned for their ability to repel the Force by creating a Force-neutral bubble in response to predation by the Force-Sensitive Vornskr. Several Ysalamiri in close proximity would work together to create Force-neutral bubbles that were exponentially larger. Although the Ysalamir itself can be considered Force-Sensitive, it basically lives in a Force-free zone. Whether or not there are other species able to nullify Force energy around them is unknown.
2.1.5. Force Absence
With Force Absence, I point towards a specific race that, up to present day, is the only occurrence of a being completely absent in the Force. The Yuuzhan Vong (ÔChildren of Yun-Yuuzhan’ or the ÔChosen Rac
