Department of CORE Studies:
Dark Brotherhood Basics

Introduction

You sit at your desk in a cold dark room of the Shadow Academy; the chill of the unknown is overwhelming as you look up at a light flickering above you. Behind you there are whispers, but you cannot see any faces, however your heart pumps faster in anticipation. In front of the room a door slides open slowly with a dull hiss, you hear heavy foot steps approach. The sound of walking ceases as the door slides shut again. Silence takes over the room as the whispers stop and the only sound you can hear is the heavy beating of your heart. Suddenly there is a loud crack in the front of the room as a metal ball slams against a metal table; the lights blink on and a man in heavy robes stands before the class. “Welcome to Dark Brotherhood Basic Training” says the man.

History of the Brotherhood

The DJB has a rich history, starting in 1995, or 11 ABY, and each day more history is written about this organization. Knowing where we come from often helps new members appreciate the DJB even more. The fictional history of the DJB began around 3900 BBY when Okemi, Tiamat and Ferran joined together as the Triumvirate. Around 2950 BBY, Tiamat lost control of a ritual that would harness the power of the star and sent the Ante star into darkness. What truly happened is a mystery, none the less, the Triumvirate fell that day. What survivors arranged themselves into three orders that we call now the Sith, the Obelisk and the Krath. Nearly 3000 years passed when Kane Vader was approached by a single emissary of Okemi. In secret, Kane Vader assumed the mantle of Grandmaster & Lord of the Star Chamber.

Using his influence in the Empire, Kane Vader recruited more members and secretly positioned himself to replace Palpatine. In 4 ABY, the Son of Anakin Skywalker slew both Palpatine and Darth Vader, ending the rule of the Empire, and Kane Vader ushered in the beginnings of what we call now the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. In 11 ABY the Dark Jedi Brotherhood was officially chartered and an allegiance with the Emperor’s Hammer was formed out of convenience. Kane Vader then appointed his apprentice Jedgar Paladin as the new Grandmaster. In 18 ABY, with Grandmaster Firefox its leader, the Dark Jedi Brotherhood broke from the Emperor’s Hammer in an event called the Exodus. Following the Exodus, the Dark Jedi Brotherhood returned to Antei System and to where it started thousands of years prior and founded its capital on Antei.

More information can be found on the Wiki or Chapter 15 of the Codex.

Orders of the Brotherhood

As said in the history, following Tiamat’s failed experiment, the survivors of the Triumvirate arranged themselves into three orders. Today those three orders are called the Sith, the Obelisk, and the Krath.

More information can be found in Chapter 2 of the Codex.

Structure of the Brotherhood

The DJB is organized into a hierarchical structure with the Dark Council, lead by the Grandmaster, holding the highest positions. The structure is then broken into units called Clans, lead by a Consul, which is further broken down into houses led by a Quaestor. From the house level, one more structure can be broken down into Battle teams.

Dark Council —> Clan —> House —> Battleteam

The Dark Council is made of the following members

¥ Grand Master (GM)

¥ Deputy Grand Master (DGM)

¥ Master-at-Arms (MAA)

¥ Headmaster (HM)

¥ Herald (HLD)

¥ Seneschal (SCL)

¥ Justicar (JST)

Clan Leadership (Summit): Consul (CON) & Proconsul (PCON)
House Leadership (Summit): Quaestor (QUA) & Aedile (AED)

More information can be found in Chapter 1 of the Codex.

Ranks in the Brotherhood

Like the command structure of the DJB, the ranks are also of a hierarchical structure with those holding the rank of Grandmaster at the top. Following the Grandmasters are the Elders, followed by Equites and then Journeymen. For journeymen, there are structured promotion requirements that can be found in the Wiki.

Grandmaster —> Elders —> Equites —> Journeymen

More information can be found in Chapter 8 of the Codex.

Identification System

With some more information about members including their ranks, positions and orders; there was a need for a visual way to organize it all. From this need the identification system was created.

If you look anyone someone’s dossier, you’ll notice the ID line at the very top and it will look something like this.
