Competition: Haikus of Home

Finished
Haikus of Home

A moment to rest, to meditate. You're alone, laying on a large, smooth rock absorbing the light reflecting down from the afar moon. Your mind drifts, and suddenly you're home. You start thinking of where you were born and the things around you when you were a child. You start to write down your memories.

Write a five-stanza haiku describing your home world. Your haiku should accurately convey the following:

  • Are your memories fond and joyful? Fearful? Angering? Sad?

  • What did it sound/smell/feel like? Emphasis should be placed on describing the senses of the memory.

Judging criteria:

  • A minimum of 5 stanzas consisting of the standard 5-7-5 syllable haiku format is required for eligibility.

  • All submissions will be graded for creativity and vividness.

Onderan jungles
That is where I lived longest
Peace, tranquility

A Jedi there said
I belonged in his Temple
But no, he was wrong

I learned to be free
I wanted to be stronger
Light wasn’t enough

I left from his side
Ran into the woods at night
Made my destiny

Built Treehouses so high
Where a ruping would reside
My one family

I was resourceful
I stole what I needed most
The locals feared me

But to get stronger
I knew I could not stay there
I left all behind

Castaway on ship
Found myself in Judecca
Started my journey

Will I go back now?
I cannot really say so
Without Onderan

I wouldn’t be here
It’s shaped me, arranged me to
Be me, Alara

Maybe I’ll visit
But not for anytime soon
I must choose the Force

Now, forevermore
But I miss my only home
Peace, tranquility
