Competition: Combat Writing - Fighting Yourself

Finished
Combat Writing - Fighting Yourself

Prompt

The addition of alt and NPC slots has led to many members having more than one character. Have you ever wanted to have your primary character fight your alternate or spar with one of your NPCs? Now’s your chance!

The setting (venue) and reason for the conflict are up to you but write a combat-focused story where two of your characters (that you have loadouts for) get into a conflict that leads to a physical altercation.

The conflict can be anything from sparring, a bet, a misunderstanding, to full-blown life or death struggle. There just needs to be action! This competition is intended as an exercise in combat writing similar to the ACC.

Tips

  • You want your reader invested in the conflict as well as captivated by the action. Think carefully about why the characters are fighting.

  • Think about the setting, are there bystanders? This is a fiction competition, not the actual ACC, so additional characters are allowed to be present and interfere in the fight in any way you deem fit. However, the focus of your submission should be on the conflict between the two identified characters. The setting/background in a solid piece of fiction is often like a character itself.

  • Give the reader plenty of action! Re-read your action scenes carefully for clarity.

  • Above all, have fun!

Submissions and Grading

  • Write an action-focused fiction at least 500 words in length with no maximum, outlining a combat skirmish between two of your characters.

  • Your story should be focused on two of your characters getting into a conflict and having an altercation that results in some form of combat. What is combat? For the purpose of this competition combat is defined as tangible action directed at the other party intended to harm, incapacitate or subdue. Force powers that have a direct "target" like an illusion or mind trick count for this. Attempted actions like shooting at and missing an opponent also count.

  • Snapshots of the two characters you are using for this competition (Main, Alt or NPC) must be included. If you have issues attaching snapshots of the characters you want to use for this competition please contact the organizer prior to submission for alternate arrangements (like using an old character snapshot). In all cases two snapshots must be provided

  • Preferred submission format is .pdf, .doc, or .txt. Anything in a Google Doc must be exported as a pdf for submission.

  • Grading will be based on the Voice Fiction Rubric, with a heavier focus on realism adherence to the character sheets.
