[Parabellum Cycle 2: Event Long] Miscellaneous - Language of the Undercity
This competition is in the [Parabellum Cycle 2: Event Long] Miscellaneous Bin.

Participation Type: High Impact

The Inquisitorius is attempting to infiltrate the Quantum Shadows Gang. You’ve been tasked with assisting Inquisitorius agents.

Street gangs often have distinct linguistic features that they use to communicate among themselves. These languages include their own unique vocabulary and slang, language mixing, and distinct Nonverbal communication (hand signs, graffiti, tattoos) features.

Knowing how to speak like a member of the Gang will greatly assist in the agents infiltration of the organization.

Your task is to create a dossier highlighting the linguistic practices of the Quantum Shadows.

Your entry should contain at least 10 distinct examples of the Gang’s unique linguistic features AND you should include examples of how these are used in contextual situations.

You may include images for non-verbal communication practices.

You may also include any additional features that you feel bring added realism or interest to the Linguistic Dossier.

Entries will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Linguistic Terminology 25%
  • Demonstrations of use 25%
  • Creativity 20%
  • Realism 15%
  • Spelling/Grammar 15%

Here is my submission for the Language of the Undercity comp. First and foremost credit for the basis of this dossier is from my family's Native American bloodline belonging to the Potawatomi Nation of my home state of Michigan. The images I used are simple stock photos that I grabbed from internet searches and tweaked in photoshop. I used the following websites for my research. The language is a derivative/hybrids of both the Potawatomi and Ottawa language as well.

1. "Heros before the Bros"

> *Likely a commentary on putting the gang first over the likes and sympathies of the "Brotherhood"

2. "Shift city"

> *An expression similar to "that's shift city" which seems to mean "someone is being untrue or shifty".

3. "Nearby Snipes"

> *Not actually referencing rifle-bearing snipers, but apparently a term for attractive people.

4. "Shoot last."

> *A counter-philosohpy to "shoot first", indicating the value of patience and letting other take the blame, but also finish off the job.

5. "Junkyard families"

> *Not everyone comes from fancy places, so the mixing up of different backgrounds.

6. "No bricks."

> When you're out of energy, referencing charging boxes for power.

7. "Red Fives"

> Likely a reference to rogue squadron, and a rally call to stand up to the opression.

8. "Shiny"

> A reference to a holonet show. Seems to be an affirmative, like "cool" or "alright", doesn't seem to have anytihng to do with luminesense.

9. "Lameblades"

> Aimed at Brotherhood members. Likely a reference to needing to rely only on lightsabers, and not realizing that the Brotherhood is made up of plenty of non-saber wielders.

10. Sign: *both fingers in the middle of the respective fist

> "I think this one is universal"

1) use of the gang's symbol in addition to paint, clothing, or makeup in specific shade ranges of blue or purple indicate membership or support of the Shadows. Purple seems to indicate some sort of seniority or higher status, as those wearing it typically are witnessed issuing orders.
2) Similarly, purple and blue chevrons on a building indicate ownership. A crossed out Chevron indicates compromised status, seen tagging after warehouse assault.
3) Hand signaling not dissimilar to the Coruscant Security standard, likely adapted from them. Basic directional cues include a hand (or lekku) pointed ahead twice for forward movement, while holding up the hand with palm flat indicates a hold. Holding up a fist cues retreat.
4) Additional hand signals recorded, the right hand crossed over the body and thumb touching forehead indicates a weapons free situation, seen shortly before an armed assault. Inversely, thumb to chin with the flat of the hand means holding fire. Saw a runner disciplined for this when he went for his blaster. Doesn't seem to be any corresponding gesture for those without a right arm; or arms at all. Suppose it's not all disability friendly.
5) I've noticed a lot more non verbal cues than verbal ones. Accounting for crowded environment in the under city, perhaps? Found more tagging. The purple is back. Symbols include intersecting lines and a series of dots beside them. Supposition is that the number of dots indicate product: spice, weapons, or speeders.
6) Overheard some chatter. "High rise" doesn't indicate a type of tall building, but is rather a sarcastic expression/epithath. Think it implies the impossibility of ever moving to a higher floor.
7) More chatter. From the locals this time. "Entangled." Applies to purple marked businesses. Means involved with the gang, but it's derogatory slang. Probably a reference to quantum entanglement? At least it's clever.
8) I'm catching a couple of phonemes that don't belong in Basic. I think it's Ryl influence. Not a full creole language, but the loan words have become common. "Brerra." Used between gang members. Nerra is brother in Ryl. You can see where it merged. Friendly terminology.
9) Makes more sense now why there's so many hand signals. Many use both hands doing the same gesture, at least when they're able. If there's Twi'lek influence on this floor and in the gang, then mimicking lekku movements follows.
10) Think I've got one more new phrase. "Get a cloud." Perk up, get going, get excited, etc. Lot of chugging caf after that's said. More molecular references? There's nerds in this thing.
