Competition: The Excavation Log

Finished
The Excavation Log

You have been tasked with performing an initial exploration of the underground areas beneath the ruins now accessible through the now unsealed entrance. You are expected to log your explorations in a journal for future reference.

You should write at least three journal entries of at least 300 words each. For these, pick a prompt out of each of the sets below and use those across your journal entries.

Prompt Set 1:

  • Wet, there's standing water on the floor up to ankle level.
  • Dirty, there's spider webs everywhere, treeroots of trees long gone above hang down, there is a sort of muddly sludge or slime covering most of the stable surfaces.
  • Airy, the room is dry and clean, there is no dust anywhere. The underground feels like it was just left yesterday. Not thousands of years ago.

Prompt Set 2:

  • The underground is sparsely decorated, spartan and utilitarian, the walls and floors are undecorated.
  • The walls are covered in frescoes of figures, historical scenes and elaborate writings. There are magnificent mosaics covering the floor, this may not be a catacomb or basement but a sunken ground floor with rooms meant to impress grandeur.
  • The underground is cluttered with debris, there are shards of pots everywhere, partially destroyed scrolls too. It seems like several storage shelves collapsed long ago and spread their content across the floor.

Prompt Set 3:

  • The underground feels oppresive, there is a darkness in here.
  • The underground feels airy and hopeful, the light persists here.
  • The underground feels strangely like a void, as if the Force itself abandoned it.

Rules:

  • PDF format is preferred for submissions, other static formats will also be accepted. No Google Doc or other editable formats.
  • Minimum word count is 900 words. No maximum!
  • Your submission should center on one of your sheeted characters, and include a snapshot for that character, though you are welcome to bring in additional characters as well.
  • The Fiction Rubric will be used for grading and placements.
