Competition: Poetry

Finished
Poetry

Poetry captures in a few words what many tomes cannot express. As one of your characters, write a poem inspired by the phrase “coming home.” Feel free to use any form, from haiku to sonnet to quatrain to free verse. Entries will be graded on adherence to the prompt and the feelings it makes me feel.

Poems must be submitted in PDF or DOCX format, or through the competition submission textbox. File formats that can be edited later, like Google Docs, will be disqualified from participation.

Home is not a place
It is holding my hand when nothing is left
It is joking with me in the empty place where grief should be
It is late nights watering plants that have long since gone to sleep
It is cradling me when the world feels too big and unknown
It is wiping away my tears when I realize how much we've lost
Home is a person
Who chose to stay even when they could have walked away
Home is him

Clouds break o'er the sea
Salt on the breeze, a lone palm

On Cor'neria I had been slumming
In violence most unbecoming
Holding Oligard
In little regard
Awaiting at last my homecoming

At least it's participation.

No home to return.
Left it all too far behind.
I'm just drifting now.
