Primary reason

I am pleased to recommend Orv Dessrx for the Ruby Scepter in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Dark Jedi Brotherhood website. Over an extended period, Orv has consistently invested his own time and initiative into improving the codebase, regularly identifying opportunities for meaningful enhancements and implementing them, often without needing to be asked. His work has had a lasting impact on both the member experience and the long-term health of the club.

Orv has delivered major features across a wide range of systems. He implemented modern passkey authentication, bringing the Brotherhood's login experience in line with current security standards while maintaining compatibility with existing authentication methods. He completely redesigned the site's footer with a responsive, modern layout that improves navigation and usability across devices. He expanded the ACC to support multiple characters per combatant, requiring substantial changes across the data model, user interface, validations, integrations, and expansion of the automated test suite, all while preserving backward compatibility.

His work has also been instrumental in modernizing the Possessions system. Orv expanded the inventory management interface with drag-and-drop functionality, transforming what was once a cumbersome workflow into an intuitive experience through careful frontend and backend engineering. Likewise, he led the development of the new C-SIR Character Sheet Reference, replacing an aging tool with a mobile-friendly, character-aware resource that significantly improves how members access and navigate character sheet-related information. Both projects have been publicly recognized as major quality-of-life improvements for the membership.

Beyond these headline features, Orv has consistently contributed numerous smaller improvements, including performance optimizations, accessibility enhancements, expanded automated test coverage, and modernization of existing systems. These changes may be less visible individually, but collectively they improve the reliability, maintainability, and longevity of the Brotherhood's website.

Orv's willingness to identify problems, propose solutions, and see them through to completion without prompting exemplifies the initiative and technical excellence recognized by the Ruby Scepter. His contributions have meaningfully improved both the developer experience and the experience of every member who uses the website. Considering how much Ruby Orv has added to the Brotherhood's codebase, it seems only appropriate that his next award bears the same name.

Additional reasons

Orv has brought drag and drop possessions management out of the bowels of my imagination and into real life.

When this project was suggested, Orv quickly jumped on the opportunity to support the Regent’s office in their desire to improve user experience. Orv took notes from our conversation and then scarpered off to complete whatever magic he was able to work for the Possessions Management idea.

A few weeks later, Orv presented me with a beta version of the drag and drop functionality. I was blown away. The subtle changes that were made to the interface as well as the added drag and drop functionality was absolutely mindblowing.

It was basically perfect from the get go. But Orv still took the time to walk through and explain to my caveman brain how it worked and why he made the choices he did.

Orv’s hard work has substantially impacted the Possession’s system and this addition is an immeasurable improvement on the quality of life for possessions management.

Thank you so much for all your hard work Orv! You’ve certainly earned this medal!

Orv, completely on his own initiative, produced two detailed courses for the Shadow Academy on Git platform for organizing coding projects. What makes Git 101 Primer and Git 102 Collaboration so special is just not the level of detail, easy-to-follow explanations and sheer amount of effort that went into the text but the twenty-seven pieces of custom artwork he created to illustrate the courses. These illustrations, drawn in the now iconic within the Brotherhood, Orv style help bring what would otherwise be a somewhat dry course on a crucial coding project tool into a much more entertaining and engaging place.

Given that the Brotherhood uses Git to manage version control and feature projects for the website this educational resource is of tremendous value and an investment in our future.

Thank you for everything you do Orv!

As Exarch, it's my honor to talk about how even in his short time back working with the SCL he's had an impact on my role and the RP admin as a whole. Orv was able to help refine the output of the RP Report we can generate to help highlight member metrics and progress in a fun way. He's also helped I know with some backend things as well that improve our worfklow.

As his QUA, it's an honor to talk about what he did during Great Jedi War XVII. Beyond taking the honor of Arcona's first hero, Orv was a positive motivation and collaborator across the board. He offered feedback on other members entries, encouraged them to do their best (gambare!) and injected levity, humor, and resolve as a role model for others around him.

Otherwise, he contributed 946.15 points to Arcona's war effort on the back of full bin participation, 18 Seals (none harmed in the writing of this recc), 3 Gold Nova, 3 Silver Nova, 3 Bronze Nova, and a few other Top 10 placements as well including FICTION(How's that for an artist-coder! Orv can do it all). I could wax on further to detail his crescents, clusters, 3 society rank ups, and other random but contributing metrics, but I think his activity across 28 competitions speaks volumes for his talent, dedication, and work ethic.

As his friend, I'm just happy I get to add some nice words onto a well deserved award. Congratulations, Orvles. We're lucky to have you not just in Arcona, but as a role model for what the Arconae should be, and how we should all approach the club when it comes to attitude, vibe, and positivity.

Thank you for everything. For your efforts, you also get one free get-out-of-Mango card.

Orv is one of the most efficient workers I have seen, as Voice I came into office with a checklist of projects to tackle, the first of which being an updated Character Sheet Reference tool. Within minutes of our first discussion on the project, Orv already had mockup prepared. Throughout the beta window, he tackled any and all feedback for the system in a timely manner, and offers continued support for updates as needed.

His infectious interest in helping and expanding system updates was evident as we wrapped up the Reference tool, as discussion about further updates was met with immediate interest.

Beyond his technical wizardry, Orv has been an astounding pillar of the community as well. Darting throughout the society chats, engaging, and recently contributing to the growth of the Brotherhood with a new series of recruits. Truly a man after my own heart, while I may no longer work in the Emissary's office, I'll always pull for those whose efforts shine a good light across all of the DB and bring us fresh members.

For everything you've done, Orv, Thank you, and ever onward!
