Debate Competition

Rules

Each Clan will have a team that will be declared at the beginning of the competition. Each of these teams will contain 8 members and must have at least one Journeymen and one Elder, unless the Clan does not have the necessary people to fill all of these positions. In that case concessions will be made. These teams may NOT be changed without the express permission of the competition staff (Telona and DS) and a valid reason is provided.

The Consul must divide the team up into the appropriate teams or individual competitors. Each Clan is allowed four individual participants and two teams.

Match ups will be random. This competition will take place on the message boards so all members of teams must be registered on the DB forum. Posting on a thread not assigned to that person will result in disqualification. There will be a thread open to report problems.

There are two types of debates in this competition each will have three rounds. The two different types will run simultaneously. Each round will last one week. A participant must post within 36 hours of his or her opponent or the judge, or risk disqualification. This is to ensure a fast-paced competition.

**Type 1:

Head to Head**

As it says, this is a debate between two people with opposing sides. Affirmative and negative as well as posting order will be assigned randomly. The order of speech and their contents are as follows:

1st Poster: Opening Statement (around 400 words)

2nd Poster: Same, but does not yet respond to points made in 1st post

1st: Argument against the other's initial post (around 300 words)

2nd: Argument against the other's initial post and arguments (around 300 words)

1st: Response to arguments (around 200 words)

2nd: Response to arguments (around 200 words)

1st: Summary and rebuttal (around 200 words)

2nd: Summary and rebuttal (around 200 words)

2 days devoted to posts against each other's points; true "argument" part (posts cannot exceed 100 words)

1st: Final words and points (around 100 words)

2nd: Final words and points (around 100 words)

**Type 2:

Teams**

Same as above, but it would be 2v2 with each teammate alternating for speeches (the crossfire is the exception).

Scoring:

Type 1 - Win = 5 points, Loss = 2 points; overall best debater (determined by win/loss record and other factors) will earn 10 points

Type 2 - Win = 5 points, Loss = 2 points; overall best debate team (determined by win/loss record and other factors) will earn 10 points

First level crescents will be awarded to the top three teams.

Team rosters of Clans that plan to participate should be sent by Consuls to Dark Sabre [[Log in to view e-mail addresses]] and Telona [[Log in to view e-mail addresses]] by Thursday July 8th. The competition will commence on the following Monday. So if you are interested, contact your Clan Consul today!

EDIT: Older members with 5+ years can subsitute for the Elder ranked members. Also DC members may either put together their own teams or can join a clan team if the clan is lacking a member for their own teams.
