Lan is tall and of average build, leaning toward slim. He has fair skin, and his once blue eyes are now vibrant yellow due to his connection with the Dark Side. Lan has very long and straight black hair, and keeps a full beard with some graying to it. His body is covered in scars and ritualistic tattoos that blend Sith, Krath, and Nightsister traditions, from the neck down. He rarely leaves those uncovered.
Lan’s mind is a chaotic jumble of half-formed ideas, prophetic glimpses into other times or places, intrusive insights, and bizarre observations. His speech is non-linear, metaphorical, contradictory, fragmented, with a splash of non sequiturs. He laughs at things no one else notices, talks to beings that aren’t there, fails to see people in front of him. Lan is fully aware of his condition, and can focus on the present if he musters his Resolve — which is physically painful to him. Lan’s eccentricity makes him an enigma: unpredictable, unconventional, but with occasional moments of insight and clarity that can catch others off guard. Those unfamiliar with him never know if he’s making sense or simply lost in his own world.
Lan’s mind is chaotic, pulling and swirling in every direction. Lan is a master at improvising and coming up with alternative solutions to problems and dilemmas he encounters. This allows Lan to find ways out of situations others might never consider, assuming he can retain his focus on the situation at hand. His solutions are often not so obvious to others, and Lan does his best to make himself understood — which is usually a struggle to his and everyone else's frustration.
Lan doesn't like to work in groups or teams and feels most comfortable on his own, or with people who are familiar and close to him (old friends, his adopted daughter Lyra, his droids). Lan sticks to himself, sets his own pace, and doesn't share feelings or emotions with others. It isn’t that he doesn’t LIKE others, but he is often frustrated by people’s inability to understand what he desperately tries to convey. As such, Lan tends to have problems relating to his comrades.
Lan has both been there and done that. He thinks he has seen or foreseen every imaginable scenario, and that almost nothing can faze him. He is constantly unimpressed by what’s unfolding around him, and begrudgingly follows his superior’s orders, cutting corners and trying to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible, so that he can go back to whatever it is he was doing before. Unless, of course, the order involves solving a mystery, uncovering secrets, or expeditions to forgotten ruins, THOSE will get him giddy.
Lan isn’t particularly fond of death, or the idea of dying. It isn’t the natural fear of death or the drive to survive that most living beings share. Lan is disturbed by beings such as Force spirits and wraiths, and the idea of what might be expecting him “on the other side” unnerves him. Lan will take calculated risks, but if the odds are stacked against him, he’d rather live to try again tomorrow. Lan also avoids killing sapient beings — he doesn’t need or want any disembodied entities coming for him at night, no thank you.
Lan is notoriously mentally unstable, and is prone to act in strange, random, unpredictable ways when pushed into the high-stress stakes of combat. Sometimes it works to his advantage (never saw that coming, huh?), sometimes it doesn't (maybe dropping the lightsaber perfectly vertical inside the spaceship wasn’t the best move).
