_He slumped against the wall, bathed in sweat and blood, fatigued beyond his body’s capability to know what rest was. The old man was getting far too old to be scrappin’ with the membership, too old to be confident that he was still doing the right thing for the Brotherhood, savagely dispatching the unworthy – but it was just “training”, right? It had stopped being training long ago, stopped being a way to teach and more of a way to rid the Brotherhood of the weak – at least, that’s what he told himself above the sickening joy. Sure, a few hours or days in a bacta tank and they were right as rain, but the damage to their psyche usually remained. Inflated egos shattered to nothing, belittled and humiliated at the end of his fists, and his staff followed suit. He led by example, maybe not the best way in their line of work, but as he watched gurney’s hover by, he found himself regretful for the first time. Long gone were the days of Xizor that he cherished so much, the days of raw abandon that dropped power like a hammer on those who faltered even the slightest bit. Long gone. He’d climbed his ladder well in the Centre, reaching the pinnacle of success as well as command, but for what? Stability? Ego? Revenge? All three, perhaps…too old. His body creaked as he pressed himself from the wall and got his feet beneath him, slowly gaining stride as his knees screamed from beneath his skin. His head panged and his knuckles were raw; rough and ragged as they wiped the sweat from his brow and drew down his face. Too old. Virtually unmatched in strength and resolve, the will of a monster etched along his scorning brow, deep set eyes of constant rage burning with hatred of a past long gone – equated to nothing, a lack of vision. Bereft of the very traits that allowed sentient beings to commune, the old man slumped into the lift that carried him to his hovel, his basement, his home. The door opened with the same creaking that still tore from his joints as he didn’t even bother forcing it to close.
