Wiki Tribune Report

Greetings one and all

Well, what a week the Wiki has had. I was appointed on Monday afternoon as the Wiki's latest Tribune and have been working on projects that the Grandmaster has given me ever since (but I will get into that in a bit).

I would first like to thank Grandmaster Sarin for this opportunity to help out with one of the Brotherhood's biggest projects, I hope to live up to everyone's expectations.

Thanks also goes to DJP Kaine Mandaala who has trained me for this role fairly well, if not by advice then certainly by example when I worked on the staff under his direction.

Well, let me layout what we have done and what we plan on doing:

  1. The Alacrity of the Commander and Position Handbooks has been wikified.

  2. Most of the Projects and Policies have been wikified - only large files under Projects have not been fully, but links to their documents exist, as well as Antei System is not complete yet nor is Clan and Order Powers System - but these will be completed by next week.

  3. Wiki work is never-ending, there is always something needing wikified or edited. With this in mind, the Clans leaders have been asked to appoint someone (or a group) to police the Clan specific articles. I would like to thank the Consuls for their help in this. The Wiki is for all of us - so the cooperation of everyone is greatly appreciated.

  4. A team of the Wiki staff has been given the assignment of policing Member Starships (starfighters, freighters, etc.) to keep everything realistic. Likewise character files will be watched carefully. I understand you think it would be cool, it's your favorite sci-fi ship or you would love to be like your favorite character - but we need to keep it Star Warsistic. Thanks again for cooperating.

  5. Content of articles wil also begin to be critiqued. Please keep your character's info in-line with DB policies. Along with that thought, your character's article is not to replace your dossier, so there is no need to upload an image of your lightsaber, warbanner, robes - etc. If you have a reasonable paragraph or more to detail why it is on the article, then we will review and given our ruling on it.

Your continued cooperation is again appreciated and as i settle in as Wiki Tribune I want to thank you for your continued contributions to the DJB Wiki - without you it wouldn't be.

One feature that highlights this is the Featured Article that lets us show off exceptional articles for two weeks. If we get more nominations and articles we could go back to 1 Featured Article a week.

We currently (at the time of this report) are at 1614 articles

We currently (at the time of this report) are at 447 Wiki users

I have a comment about "point five." As far as people uploading their robes and lightsabers and such, their Wiki is, for all intents and purposes, "their character's space." I would say that the robes and lightsabers are very much an important part of each character. Warbanners, even then, somewhat. I don't believe we actually use them fictionally, but still. Each person is using images to enhance their page to THEIR satisfaction.

Using the images does not violate any DB regulation that I see. There is mention that the Wiki article does not replace the dossier, but there is no regulation against using dossier images to enhance the Wiki. The idea that the Wiki staff would have to give permission for each member to use these images there isn't one I can, or ever will, support. As long as people aren't doing anything ridiculous, or just copying their dossier to the Wiki, or actually violating standards, leave them alone.

Part of the reason why #5 has been policy since the day the wiki was uploaded is that images take up space. There are 3.2 gigabytes of warbanner, robe, lightsaber and other award images already on the website servers that I would appreciate not having duplicates of.

While I am not hurting for space on the webserver, added used space does take a hit on my ability to keep the website backed up.

Given that, I don't think that the policy of "if you have a picture on your wiki, explain it" is unreasonable. I'm sure Tron's mostly referring to people that upload the images and just put "this is my warbanner" under it rather than giving an explanation for what the symbols mean, etc etc.

I can appreciate, and agree with, not having images uploaded twice. I can appreciate, and agree with, members actually having a reason for using images to enhance their Wikis. But, in the end, even "it just looks good there, in my opinion" is good enough to a certain extent if it's "my Wiki." The Wiki Staff can say, "Hey, this might look better," or "in my opinion, it disrupts the feel/flow of your Wiki," but after that, it really is up to taste.

And, related to that, if the Wiki staff is going to start going over Wiki images and telling people to remove them/change them/whatever, you may want to add in something to the Wiki rules/regulations page to the effect of "images ought to serve a purpose on your Wiki, and you should be prepared to defend them to the Wiki staff if they question your use of it."

While not using those terms, it's not something "new" when it comes to the Warbanner/other dossier images

It hasn't been updated since May, so it isn't anything new at all. Whether you agree or not, sudden outrage over it is pretty belated

I wouldn't call it "outrage," Halc. Nor would I call it disagreement with the rules. The Guidelines say that, basically, if there's a reason for the image there, it's all good. If you actually tie it in, and use it to enhance something as far as character history or info, no worries.

The way Tron laid it out in this report, it made it sound like "if it fits and you have a paragraph or more, and there's a reason for it, then we're going to review your Wiki and then rule whether or not you can keep it." I'm saying I disagree with THAT. If people have already adhered to the Guidelines as noted currently, there's nothing to review.
