Medal Changes

As the Dark Council gathered for the evening, William Flechette Cantor Taldrya stepped forth from his place in the shadows. Looking around the audience chamber where the Council was gathered, Flechette cleared his throat.

"I have a few announcements for our grand Brotherhood," Flechette said. His eyes radiated beneath his hooded cloak, and the various pins and sashes that adorned his robe echoed what little light there was in the room, glinting like miniature supernovas in the dark chambers. Pulling his cloaked hood down from his head, his almost-human features peered at the rest of the council.

"Brother Flechette, speak to our assembled body, then," Telaris Cantor said from his seat near the Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master.

"Out of necessity, several changes have been made to the way we recognize our Brothers," Flechette whispered, his voice echoing throughout the acoustical Council room. He looked around the council and addressing each shadowy visage that sat in the umbric room. ..

A few changes are being made to the medal system. They are as follows:

  • The Legion of the Scholar (LS) is having two changes made to it.

    • First, the Grand Legion upgrade now requires 15 Legions to be earned.
    • Second, a new upgrade has been added for members who have reached 30 Legions: the Legion of the Scholar w/ Exalted Legion. This is denoted by (LSE).
  • The Cluster of Fire changes made a few months ago will be reflected in the Dark Side Compendium once Jac receives the updated HTML and has time to change it.

  • The Crescent system is being revamped. Under the new system, there will be five levels of Crescents.

  • The first level is designed for major events, such as the Independence Games or Capital Gains, and has the Diamond (1st), Ruby (2nd), and Amethyst (3rd) Stars.

  • The second level is for major competitions that require a lot of effort from those who participate, such as Krath Monthly Topics. The second level has Ruby (1st), Amethyst (2nd), and Sapphire (3rd) Stars.

  • The third level is for "normal" competitions that require effort to participate or attend, but isn't necessarily a competition that would require hours and hours of work. Most Clan competitions would fall into this category, and melee nights will also. Third level competitions receive Amethyst (1st), Sapphire (2nd), and Emerald (3rd) Stars.

  • The fourth level is for low-effort competitions that are designed to be quick and fun. These consist of things such as "Top 10 Lists" or word-puzzles in reports. Fourth level competitions receive Sapphire (1st), Emerald (2nd), and Topaz (3rd) Stars.

  • Fifth level competitions are trivial competitions that require almost no effort. Examples are guessing lyrics or a single-image caption competitions. Fifth level competitions have Emerald (1st), Topaz (2nd), and Quartz (3rd) Stars.

When a new competition is approved, it should have a suggested level for awards, which will then be approved or modified by the DGM. In addition, if a competition receives 3 or fewer submissions, it is automatically bumped to one higher level. This new system is designed to allow competitions to suitable awards its participants based on the amount of work required for the competition rather than the scope of the competition, as it was previously. These changes should soon be reflected in the DSC along with the LS and CF changes.

What if the competition is a Fifth Level comp and less then 3 entries are recieved, does it remain a Fifth Level comp?

Yes, a fifth level comp will remain a fifth level comp. Also, on another note, I'd like to thank Kaiann for many of his suggestions for the medal system - input is always appreciated, and he gave a lot of it and designed a good deal of the new system, so hats off to Kai!

so this would mean that battleteam and house level competitions, in the form of fictions, would fall into the 3rd category, and thus award higher crescents then they used to, or am I mistaken there?

Yes, competitions for battleteams and House that require sufficient effort will now be awarded higher crescents. :)

A very nice change... and far more in tune with what I always felt the Crescent system should be like.

Admittedly it isn't as far as I would take it myself, as I personally think that Gold, Silver and Bronze Crescents are all we need, but this is a nice start down the right road. It is far better to see Crescents awarded for the type of competition rather than just the number of people who are in the potential group of participants. It also is very good to see all Clan level competitions awarding the same medals, as that does held to strengthen the value in the award far more.

Finally, something to stop my ID getting too long with all the LSGs. :P

one more question... if all standard competition medals are now the same, how is a TET going to award medals for his competitions? does he / she have to bug his CON or PCON about it everytime, or will this see some fixing?

As a QUA, I can only award medals for a 4th or 5th level comp. But a lot of house comps could be considered 3rd level. So I agree, allow QUA/AED to award up to 3rd level crescents, and CMDR/TET/SGT to award up to 4th level.

I'll talk to the DC about it.

Some changes will need to be made to who can award what, or else half of the people running competitions will not be allowed to award the people who compete. Without having to track down a member who can award them which at the very least will greatly delay the awarding of any Crescents.

I've dealt with people not being able to award medals before...they just send me an e-mail and I take care of it, generally. Yes, it is slower, but it still gets done. You get your medals a few days later than normal - I don't think it's a huge deal. But I will be looking into modifying who can award what and suggesting it to Jac/Cybey/FF.

I suppose it makes sense if Diamond Crescents and Ruby Crescents could only be awarded from Clan summit up, maybe Diamond Crescents only by the DC stull. I don't think many people will run competitions at that level, and if, not often.

I'll probably propose Level 1 be reccomended by DC, Level 2 by Clan Summits, Level 3 by House Summits, and Level 4 by Battleteam Leaders, with each level including all of those below it.

house summits... will that include the entire House Summit, or just the QUA and EAD, with RM there just for aestetic value? :P

House summit meaning QUA and AED, Clan summit meaning CON and PCON. I don't really see why a RM would need to reccomend crescents, which is why they wouldn't be given that priveliege.
