Spreading infections

To all Clans still receiving communications from Lyspair:

It seems the infections lately afflicting the Brotherhood are not yet contained. After thoroughly evaluating blood samples taken from the blood of all losers in the recent Antei Combat Center fights, the medical staff of the Shadow Academy have diagnosed eight additional afflicted members.

So far it seems that the infection is only spread through contaminated blood or saliva which must directly enter the bloodstream or come into prolonged contact with mucous membranes. It is thus strongly recommended not to enter in combat or intimate relations with any members you believe might be exposed to the infection. We should also point out that the incubation period seems to be around 24 to 48 standard hours, thus even members seemingly not affected by the disease may already be infectious.

All measures are being taken to develop a cure or at least a vaccine and some preliminary successes have been reported with certain protein sequences. However we do not yet have conclusive results.

UPDATE: After rechecking some samples that had borderline indicators, two more infections will have to be considered confirmed.

OOC: After evaluating the ACC judging at the end of chapter 3, 10 more members have contracted the infection. Check your dossier to make sure in case you fought ACC :)

We do not condones this medical research. The lies this weak fool disseminates are part of a conspiracy against the solidarity of the Council and the clans themselves. You must not listens to this weak councilman. He deceives. The treachery runs deep among their kind. We do not like his attempts to divides the brotherhood of our clans and divides the families and alliances which have made us strong.

The time for now is war! We must kills our enemies. We must spills the blood! There is no time to waste. We must slaughter and proclaim victory of the enemies at all costs.

Spills the bloods my brethren!!!

Can I request samples and the research data used to ascertain these findings?

Assuming you have isolated the infecting agent itself, how far away are we from the following : DNA structure, organic composition and a cure?

Are we also to assume that scientific integrity was maintained throughout the research of this infection? Are vectors truly limited only to saliva and blood? What of other fluids that may face "cross contamination" in the body (i.e. digestive fluid)?

:P

Due to the high infection rates in the Clans, no specifics of the effort or its status may leave Lyspair. While this may sound paranoid, we cannot risk the infected members taking countermeasures to our research. If you wish to have further data, you would have to be willing to relocate to the Shadow Academy laboratories for the remaining duration of this crisis.

That's convenient. :P

Understanding the sensitivity of the situation, it is still highly odd when a research institution will insist on using their facilities to verify their claims.

From the manner in which information is being stymied through the scientific community, one would then have to infer that the recent announcement by the Shadow Academy, without first publishing within the scientific community for independant analysis and interpretation, means that infection does not truly exist.

(I've gone to one too many hearings on scientific findings...)

spits on green dossier I don't WANNA be infected. A plague on you all! If that's how you repay me for working my arse off in the last few phases, I'm not going to do anything in the next two. Hmph. sulks

SWL Maxamillian von Oberst-Tarentae - I would be willing to discuss with you the results we have so far obtained if some safe-guards can be established to ensure our research does not reach the infected.

However, I should explain that this infection is at least partly mystical in nature and may not conform to the norms you would ordinarily expect of an infectious agent.

At the moment, you should assume that all bodily fluids are potentially infectious. We are not aware of any vectors for this agent, but we do not exclude the possibility that they may exist. There is certainly a reservoir, probably somewhere in the archaeological dig, which will require further examination after the infection has been limited.

I can reassure you that scientific integrity has been maintained at every stage of the investigation. Double-blind trials were undertaken with sufficient controls to ensure a high statistical power.

If you can suggest a suitable Dark Jedi scientific journal, we will certainly plan to publish our work once there is no risk of the infected Jedi using it to increase the infectivity of the agent, or to thwart our attempts to bring the situation under control.

(I'll happily talk to you IC about this if you really want ;o) )

At what point will any potential vaccine be considered ready for distribution? Specifically, what is the minimum rate of successful vaccination that will be required of the compound before it is deemed workable? I ask because a one in ten, or even one in one hundred, success rate in protecting clean individuals against the infection, provided the vaccine does not carry enough live samples to cause the disease itself, would prove valuable indeed, providing, if nothing else, a safe core of uninfected personnel to continue operations, should the worst befall us.

To such ends, I volunteer myslef to the Academy to assist in whatever manner I am able, to the end of perfecting some manner of defense.

Whoo! Lorad volunteers for scientific experimentation!!
