Another race update

Just a quick point, one which I thought was obvious, but wasn't.

We aren't going to approve races that are taken straight from copyrighted material, or even ones that are just modified to be a little star warsish. Two reasons:

  1. It's wrong.
  2. I really don't want a lot of non-SW type creatures getting in the way of the SW atmosphere.

I'll consider some things if you give the author proper credit, and we'll consider things that are based roughly on another work, but you can't just steal it and call it yours.

"...descriptions of 180 alien species..."

Literally everything anyone could think of already exists in the Star Wars galaxy. At the end of the day there's hardly even any real need to say 'convert' things like Klingons or Elves across, as they all basically have their own Star Wars counterpart already- you think there aren't any official authors who don't have an Elf fetish too? Mr. Drizzt Do'Urden himself, R. A. Salvatore has managed to write enough Star Wars novels and find something to his liking.

If nothing more, there's even the Clawdites and Shi'ido shapeshifter species... that's everything covered, and with using a Star Wars species.

Star Wars is more than just Mon Calamari, Wookies, Zabrak and Hutts... look outside the films, there's a whole galaxy of ideas.

Thinking about it... much as it would be in violation of basically every copyright law its hardly something new to the world of Star Wars so...

...if someone asked really nicely I could sit down one afternoon and scan in all the pictures from the Ultimate Alien Anthology so we could make a decent alien species catalogue.

I believe they're in sets of 4 so that would be 45 pictures, would take me a while but it might help... as there really is some seriously weird stuff in there that most people have probably never heard of. After all, like I said in the other post, if you've only sat down and watched the films you'll know about.... what... 12 or so species tops?

I can only imagine what was attempted to be passed off as a SW race...

Xanos: You have to remember that the vast majority of SW fans only know the movies, and even then it's not like all the races you see on-screen are identified. Even someone like myself who has read a couple dozen of the novels only knows a handful of races. I think there are some solutions to this, but they aren't easy.

  1. Scan in the pictures and essentially recreate the book online, though like you said that may have some sort of legal conflict. What I'd suggest is something small, like a small picture with a quick descriptive paragraph with some essential info. Since it's an RPG sourcebook we wouldn't need to know all the D20 stats.

  2. Create a list of the species and link them to the SW Databank entries, if they exist there. If there are any that are not already online you can make a site for them. It seems like a lot more work to go find them online, but then you're only making a handful of entries as opposed to all of them.

  3. Encourage people to go to their local bookstore and paw through that book! Most stores are pretty open to that sort of thing - Barnes & Noble or Borders pretty much encourage it with all those recliners around the store.

CUSWE returns 1083 species, most have descriptions and a lot of them have links to pictures: http://www1.theforce.net/cuswe/categories.asp?category=42
