Test Pilot Selected For New TIE Prototype

NexusMage has been selected as the primary test pilot for the new TIE Vindicator starfighter. He will be assigned to pilot the first of two prototypes, and is authorized to fly prototype-I whenever he wishes, although ownership will remain with the GMRG for the time being.

The TIE Vindicator, developed in secret through funding diverted by the Dark Council, is anticipated to become the mainstay starfighter of the GMRG. Mass production of the Vindicator is expected to take place later this year. Although because of the design's prohibitive cost, it is unlikely to see widespread deployment throughout the Dark Brotherhood.

The Vindicator is an escort fighter/bomber capable of effectively destroying both starfighters as well as capital ships. Its armament includes two experimental hexagonal lasers (gatling lasers) and three warhead launchers with variable ordinance (4 conc missiles or 3 proton torpedoes each). To keep the cost down, the Vindicator does not currently mount shields or a hyperdrive, but retains the option for either.

Hexagon Lasers? Good against fighter and capital ships? Can it bend time, too? Ludicrous. Still have fun, NM.

It's hardly a superfighter if that's your concern. its not even as good as a TIE Advanced or a TIE Defender.

and a hexagon laser is more of a gatling laser than a hex-laser.

As resident Super Geek and Keeper of the List of Ship Stuff nobody needs to worry about anything being approved as a super fighter, because, well, I'm an asshole when it comes to those :P

I'm still thinking abou exactly how to approach these things, but, as a basic idea: A TIE Defender has 6 full power lasers. This has 12 half-power lasers. That works it out that its still realistic. In ROTS (and AOTC) the Jedi starfighters fire increadibly fast - because they don't have 2 lasers, they actually have 2 twin low powered lasers.

This is the same principle... rather than six regular lasers, or three twin lasers, we've got two hex lasers. High rate fire but the actual energy discharges are going to be a lot lower than what you get from your basic lasers.

Hmmm, interesting. Hope someone can make a picture to go with the description.

Khob's has a picture somewhere... bug him :P

I highly doubt that this Vindicator (being both a fighter and a bomber) has the capabilities to destroy a Capital Ship, even in large numbers. The problem with creating craft that are both fighters and bombers is that it sacrifices the good points of each, so I can assume the Vindicator will be a bit more maneuverable than a TIE Bomber, but with less firepower.

But in the hands of an expert pilot? Who knows but Lord Darth himself...

The Vindicator fills a hybrid role somewhere between a TIE Interceptor and a TIE Bomber. It's not as fast or as maneuverable as the TIE Interceptor nor does it carry the same payload of a TIE Bomber.

In large numbers they can reasonable destroy light cruisers or frigates. They would probably need a bomber wing to assist them in destroying anything larger than a Nebulon-B.

Well, I think it still sounds pretty neat-o, and anyone that says "neat-o" should be listened to because they're probably about to be beaten and then dragged through the streets. =p

Now, how about we divert a bit more of that dark council funding over here?

If I were you, Khobai, I would scrap the entire project. Hybrid craft are notoriously unstable and inefficient.

The Vindicator would be slaughtered outright in any dogfight, even with an upgraded standard TIE. It's smarter to simply upgrade the current GMRG craft with hyperdrive and shielding. Our Interceptors and TIE Bombers can do all the stuff the Vindicator can and better.

Just my views, no need to heed me. I'm just a quiet little Hunter...:P

You people read to much into these fictional awards. It's just a cool looking graphic with some stats... we aren't really going to go out and fly these things.

It's meant to be a cool award and nothing more, don't devalue it by pointing out it's flaws :P

If we're aiming for a fighter/bomber hybrid, doesn't the TIE Scimitar already fulfull this role? If you're looking for a vehicle award, why not just use something already in canon?

Vindicator is the name of my YT-2400 :D

Because TIE Scimitars look stupid. The GMRG needs an intimidating-looking fighter... not some trashcan with wings.

The entire concept of the Dark Brotherhood is the farthest thing from canon... yet people nitpick about a microscopic detail like a custom starfighter? Who cares.

Seeing as those who have been posting here do "care", it's probably best to stop saying "who cares" :P We're in a club pretending to be dark jedi..hence, we're geeks :P As such, little things like this do interest some of us and people will nit-pick things. Khobs, you're one of the largest "nitcpikers" around always making comments here and there. Don't complain when others do the same too :P

My nit-pick is why do we have to have a "TIE"-based fighter instead of just making one up just for us. Make a GMRG-only fighter with decent stats. That's be fun. But whatever...a free ship is a free ship so congrats to Nexus

I say we get to work on a functional cloaking device. We hammer out that problem and BAM suddenly the upper hand's on the other foot.

With what money? Unlike the Empire, the Dark Brotherhood doesn't have billions of credits to spend researching technology like cloaking devices. The TIE Vindicator is impressive when you put into perspective that the DB doesn't have unlimited resources.

Looks great to me. Congrats Nexus!
