Karen Traviss Signing

Karen Traviss Signing

A couple of hours ago I went to a Karen Traviss book signing at a small book store in Decatur, GA. Did you know she's English? I only learned about it this morning in the paper, which stinks, because I would've loved to have gotten an honorary member plaque to give to her. I didn't even have time to print some recruitment cards. Anyways, she talked a little and then signed copies of her books (she was promoting her Clone Wars novelization), so below I have some cool facts and images.

One thing interesting she said was that she doesn't read fiction, in fact she rarely reads at all. She watches a lot of movies, but other than that she considers herself a writer, not a reader. She also said that she doesn't write her stories, they write themselves, and that often times she is surprised at where the characters take them. She is a character writer, rather than a plot writer. A funny tidbit she said was that after writing Jacen Solo in LotF, she would've voted for him because of his morals and beliefs, despite the choices he later made. She cited the film 2001: A Space Odyssey as a major influence on her wanting to write science fiction and fantasy.

Along with The Clone Wars and her upcoming Order 66 novels, she is also working on continuing the Republic Commando series under the title Imperial Commando, as well as a Boba Feet book (or series?) that is in the very very early stages.

There was also a costume contest, so there were a bunch of kids dressed up. One funny moment I caught was when a group of kids, one dressed as Boba Fett, said something about how cool Jango Fett was. In a matter of fact sort of way, a kid behind me said: "Actually, he's Boba Fett, not Jango."

Anyways, it's was a really interesting event, she talked a lot about how she writes and all that jazz. In fact, she completed The Clone Wars novelization in just two weeks. Now, on to the pictures, which I took from my handy dandy iPhone.

Despite the small event, there were five members of the 501st attending, which was cool. This was the first time I had ever seen them. There were two storm troopers, a scout trooper, a clone trooper, a Tusken Raider, and an Imperial Guard. Very nice costumes all around.

Apparently Order 66 didn't work out so well for this clone...

No, that's not me in the picture, I'm male :P My shadow is in one of them though...

Any-who, that's my report on the Karen Traviss book signing, great event. She's doing a tour right now, so if you look around she'll probably be coming to a couple other American cities.

Honorary member Plague... Sounds enticing.

My bad, plaque :P

On a side note: I'd love to make the images bigger, but Photobucket has decided to be a piece of s**t that I want to nuke

Pics of Aabs or I starting banning with my mind.

Wait, she was in Decatur, GA (25 minute drive)? Why wasn't I told! Bah!

Thanks for the update

Heh, lucky you, I drove an hour :P I didn't even know about it until I saw the AJC that morning

You didn't know she was English?

It sorta says that in her bios at the end of the books. :P

Her US tour is over, by the way.
