This isn't the most accurate representation of CSK activity, but if Ast
likes it, who am I to complain? :D

-Elya has been hard at work keeping the run-on updated and posted. Good

-Mailing list total for January: 568. A fantastic total, to be sure!
Unfortunately, we missed the record of 572 in December by 4 messages.
However, 1140 messages in two months by 23 people is...well, AMAZING!!

So this isn't about the DB or the EH at all. Oh well. Think of this as
a public service announcement :D

I watched "The Prophecy" again last night. Tis such a great movie. For
those of who unfamiliar with this fine motion picture (which is called
"God's Army" in Europe, I think), I will summarize: Thomas Daggett
(played by Elias Koteas) was one prayer from becoming a priest. Five
years later, he is a detective on a case where his seminary school
thesis on angels turns up in a murder scene. His investigation leads
him on a rather bizarre path to Chimney Rock, Arizona, where an
infamous army colonel has just died. He discovers that he is not the
only stranger in Chimney Rock: the angel of death, Gabriel
(fantastically played by Christopher "I am cooler than you" Walken), is
in town looking for something. If Gabriel finds what he is looking for,
heaven and earth will be transformed forever.

Okay, so I'm not a journalist. But that's the basic plot. What makes
this movie stand out is its distinctiveness. The typical Hollywood
cliches are not to be found. For example, although Thomas befriends and
fights with Catherine (Virginia Madsen), they do not become
romantically involved. They remain focused on the task at hand. "You
mean they don't have meaningless sex?" That's correct; no meaningless
sex for you! And instead of these elaborate, computer-animated, angel
v. angel fight scenes, the movie only shows you fragments, like the
visions Thomas sees. The viewer is left to piece everything together.
There's gore and violence, but unlike most Hollywood-esqe movies, it's
not glorified. I love "Gladiator"...when I want to see heads rolling
around. I also enjoy the little biblical humor in there (Gabriel is
playing with some school kids and has a little boy try to play a
trumpet. When the boy blows, the trumpet blasts a perfect, loud, and
beautiful high C. Hark the herald angels sing :D).

And special props go out to my man Christopher Walken. You think you've
killed a lot of people? Try being the angel of death. Not only does he
kill indiscriminately (he points a finger, your heart stops), but he
also keeps people from dying. One of the more gruesome and tragic
characters in the movie is Jerry, who has committed suicide. However,
Gabriel keeps him alive and makes him do his dirty work (digging up
graves, shooting people, driving). Mundane killing aside, Walken
realizes all the time Gabriel's dilemma: he is acutely aware of God's
love towards humans, yet is sent by God to kill us. Thomas, because
he's studied angels, notes this in the movie, "being an angel with one
wing dipped in blood." It's this dichotomy Gabriel sees everyday and
what drives him to do what he does. Walken plays the part of Gabriel
with such flair and understanding you almost think he really is an
angel.

The movie is a little old (1995), but most decent video stores (NOT
Blockbuster) should have it. Be sure to watch this one before seeing
the two sequels because this is the pure stuff. II and III have been
touched by Hollywood. It's less than 100 minutes long, so take the
night off and rent it. And yes, this is the second movie I've
recommended that stars Viggo Mortensen, though his acting here is even
better than in LotR.

CONCLUSIONS:
People, we are currently the number TWO Krath house in the DB. #1 is
within our reach. All we must do is continue our winning ways in the
GKW. In order to do that, we must submit as many entries as we can. I
want to see participation from everyone who can! The more we write, the
more likely we will become the #1 Krath house. If we don't, forget
about it.
