Deputy Grand Master Report

  1. A couple days ago, an incident happened in the DB IRC channel. In that incident, I personally attacked a member of the Dark Council, verbally and in full view of the channel. My actions on that day were unacceptable and unbecoming of a member of the high offices, both as Deputy Grand Master and as Executive Officer of the Emperor's Hammer. This conduct should be an example to all persons, in all levels of command, of how not to handle an issue. When this should've been dealt with privately, I decided (and decided wrongly) to publically rake that Dark Council member, Mejas, over the coals. Members of this subgroup and of this entire club deserve better, and deserve a higher standard of temperment and maturity from their leaders, as it is the leaders who provide the foundation for members to have fun. When those leaders, such as myself, act in such a manner it reflects poorly upon all levels of command and upon the Emperor's Hammer itself. It also reduces confidence in the persons charged with making this whole thing work. Whether or not my comments towards Mejas were valid or not isn't open for debate, as those matters, ironically, are being solved privately anyway. What is valid is the fact that we should respect the work and feelings of others and put forward any critcism of that work in a logical, civil way that follows the established chain of command that runs right through this club. I didn't do that and the time this incident happened, I was already tired, angry and pissed off. But that is no excuse because I've been tired, angry and pissed off before and I should've known better than to indulge in these actions. As has been clearly pointed out by several people, if I had acted in this fashion on a workplace, especially in front of people so willingly to inform my boss, then it's very likely I would lose my job. Taking stock of all of this, my 15 or so minutes of abuse towards Mejas was malicious, violent and most importantly, wrong. It had no place in that channel, or any other EH channel or public forum. People have apologised to me in the past and they never mean it. Well, I do mean it when I do apologise. And the sharper readers might have figured out what this long bit of writing it about - an apology to Mejas for my actions. So, Mejas, I am deeply sorry for my conduct in the IRC channel and for any emotional hurt it may have caused. My actions were wrong and constituted a personal attack upon you, rather than being a civil critcism of valid things. In addition, I will endevour to ensure this doesn't happen again to you or any other member of the Emperor's Hammer, nor allow it to cloud my judgement in any future recommendations of award towards your person. Lastly, because of these events, the Fleet Commander has ordered that I stay out of EH channels for "2-4 weeks". I am currently waiting for confirmation, at the time of writing, from the HI on exactly what the duration will be. In any case, I will be continuing to perform my duties as Executive Officer and Deputy Grand Master to the best of my abilities.

  2. It's been pointed out that it may seem that I'm not actually doing much as DGM. I have asked Firefox a few times recently if he was pleased with my performance and all I've gotten is "more visibility" (I guess that IRC ban kills that a bit). The problem when you get to a certain level is you end up doing a lot of work that doesn't necessarily get implemented, or work that is involved in maintaining the checks and balancings of the organisation. Just so everyone knows that I"m not sitting around doing nothing, here's a list of stuff I'm currently doing:

  • Updating the DSC.

  • Following on from that first point, I will be consulting with the GM and other related parties on major rewrites of certain parts of the DSC. I've also looked into a downloadable version of the DSC a bit, although it might not be viable.

  • I'm heading up the implementation of changes to the way battleteams work. The first phase of this is the DB-wide AWOL check we're currently having. Further phases will be rolled out after that.

  • Approving DB competitions.

  • Playing with ideas in my head for the next vendetta, most likely a GJW. For those who don't know, for me, making a competition is a very long process. Prelude to Andevia began life as a DB competition something like a year ago. An actual open window for such a thing is a few months away still.

If there is anything you think I should be doing or stuff I do now that could be improved, feel free to [Log in to view e-mail addresses].

  1. The Tactical Officer, in a superhuman display of dedication, has already reviewed all the pilot submissions for Prelude to Andevia and given them to me in a pretty, organised Excel spreadsheet. Guess that means I should start marking the other entries. I'm hoping to have the results in by next weekend, at the latest. Medals, of course, will be awarded around then.

  2. I got Jedi Outcast (aka Jedi Knight 2, JK2) a few days ago, and everyone else should too! The game is so much like perfection. :P For those who've been living under a rock for the last few months, JK2 follows on from Jedi Knight. It uses the Quake 3 engine (the engine is the bit of software that "drives" all the graphics on the screen) so it's very pretty, if you have the machine to run it. It features single player and multiplayer. Multiplayer features a wide range of very nice maps. Note you'll need a 56K modem or faster to play it, 33.6K doesn't really cut it. Also, an extra benefit to it using the Q3 engine is mods! Quake 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein (another Q3-engine game) have already been modded to hell, which means making maps, adding models, skins and new weapons and force powers should be oh-so-easy for us. And we have Raven Software and LucasArts to thank for this bundle of joy.

  3. As mentioned in my last report, the next EH Newsletter will be focused around JK2. What I want is reviews and articles about JK2 or related topics. You get a nice shiny award for submitting something too, so there's your motivation.

  4. Congratulations to Drako for his promotion this week and to Mairin for her medal last week.
