Canon Fodder Episode 1 - The Inquisitor

One of the greatest assets we have in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood is our membership. Within our membership we have people whose skill range across the entire spectrum, from fiction writing to website coding and even if rumours are to believed: game design. Part of my job as Recruitment Tribune is to find out ways to harness our abilities and skills, and use them to show off our club to the rest of the internet... but in the areas of Fiction, that has been decidedly hard.

You see, there's a bit of a problem at times... people who aren't in the Brotherhood don't know who our characters are. Much of what we do, thanks to our vast resources of Character Sheets and Wikipedia Articles, even our Dossiers, allows us to jump into a story with characters that are predefined, already a known factor.

This makes sharing our excellent works a bit harder with the internet at large, because frankly... they don't know why a grumpy old man from a weird place called Taldryan is an ace pilot who thinks he's a panda. They don't know why those brave warriors from Scholae Palatinae call their leader Emperor... our standard fictions exist in a universe we've created, and it's not a universe everyone shares in... yet.

To those ends, I will be running a series of fiction competitions in conjunction with the Voice, designed to showcase our membership's fantastic abilities, and share with the internet.

You can find the first competition here, and please make note of the details section. This competition is to make use of established canon only, and is not to make use of any members of the Brotherhood. If you have any questions, feel free to [Log in to view e-mail addresses] and ask.

Good luck, and I'm looking forward to seeing what our writers can do!

Just The Seal

Ah, now I guess I gotta research this Inquisitor or go watch SW Rebels. :P

Yes..."research." That is what we shall call it.

In the future we'll be choosing characters from the films as well as the books and comics, this was just the first writing prompt that took our fancy. Look out for other fan favourites to be appearing later on ;)

Boba Fett?!

Whilst I can see the point behind this, is there not merit into showcasing GJW winning entries or similar in-universe works to show what's possible?

Using GJW Fictions and other works has already been done, and will continue to be done. Mostly though, it has been met with a resounding "huh?" from the communities where we're focusing our efforts. So we're trying to create more content that people who have no idea what the DB, or its people, or its plot will be able to relate to.

The end goal of reaching more potential members, or forums of interaction, is easier to reach through recognizable characters or events. Writing about canon characters, or different views of movie events, or whatever, is even easier than, say, "what if I dueled Darth Maul in some secret, never before known of event" because it gets us out in defined, canon format. And, let's face it. Goat pointed out once that it's fun to get out of years-old characters, and will potentially draw more of our authors of any tenure, new or decades-old vets. This is actually a really good, potentially very valuable project for the Club.

Thanks for doing this, guys. Huge props on vision, here.

I'm dealing with the aftermath of hard drive crash, so won't get to do anything for this, but.. looks like a very, very cool idea.

Like BF said, I've enjoyed writing totally different characters a lot over the years-- heck, I killed Xanos off for four years to do something different-- so the prospect of delving into some canon characters? That's an interesting challenge, as I've never written proper "fan fiction" before, and it sounds like a fun project.
