Policy Update: Dark Brotherhood Chat Policies

Greetings all,

This is a short update to let the membership know that we have updated the Dark Brotherhood Chat Policies wiki page to codify the general spoiler ban that has been institutionalized since the release of The Force Awakens.

This is a formal change to put into words exactly what is expected with this policy up till now. I have included the text below that has been added to the policies:

Spoiler Chat Etiquette

As stated above, with the exception of #spoilers, discussion is generally prohibited in all other chats for one week after a Star Wars series episode and for one month after a movie. The reason is not everyone is able to view the content on the day of release and we want their experience to not be diminished by learning information ahead of time.

Spoilers take on many different meanings based upon each person’s desire to be uninformed of the upcoming content. Ranging from a total news blackout to only watching publicly released trailers.

To help clarify what could be considered a spoiler in a public chat, examples have been provided below.

  • Plot Points - Discussing any topic that relates to the plot of the episode/movie. Such as what occurred, what didn’t occur, or how something played out
  • Reveals - Such as the appearance of a character or artifact without support detail as to what the character did or how the artifact was utilized
  • Graphics/Memes - Ranging from specific stills from an episode to meme’s, such as “describe the episode without spoilers” which may hint at what occurred

Thank you all,
Thane "Atra" Skotos, Justicar

Two spoiler related arguments I've seen is on international releases (if something is released in one country before the rest of the world, is it ok to spoil it a week later for people who haven't had a chance to see it yet) and trailers (some people hate trailers and consider them spoilers so don't want to hear anything about them before release). Where do you stand on those?

Zentru'la, I'd assume we'd follow it based upon the North America release schedule with a general preference that the majority of the discussion be contained to the #Spoilers channel.

So, we always ask that it be kept to #spoilers if something is unclear. In general, we tend to defer to North American dates when it comes to our policies and rules as that is the majority of membership. That said, it is reasonable to try to accommodate members that may not have access to the content. In those cases, we can only rely on the membership to do their best.

It is rare for an actual incident to be spawned from a spoiler, and that is generally reserved for malicious acts of intentional spoilers (as happened with The Force Awakens).

you're a spoiler

"Spoilers" are Canon news. You heard it here first folks. If it exists there it's possible here!
