Ascending Convergence - Chapter Three

competition

Fort Dooku
Aliso, Aliso System
44 ABY

The blast door slammed shut just behind Lieutenant Jorren with a heavy clang that rolled down the corridor like distant thunder. "Move!" he snapped, already pushing forward as the emergency lights strobed overhead.

The corridor beyond was a mess of bodies and noise, voices overlapping in a constant stream of reports and orders. Technicians dragging equipment trying to occupy the same space as security personnel trying to force order onto a situation where nothing wanted to stand still.

"We've lost power in the lower vaults!"

"No, reroute it here, not there!"

"I need confirmation on that relay grid, Sergeant!"

Jorren didn't allow himself to slow, pushing forward as well as he could manage. His squad followed the path their broad shouldered commander was plowing through the mass of personnel that was blocking their way. Every few steps something shifted. Lights failed then flashed to blinding life again, a sealed door opening with a whoosh that seemed to take everyone by surprise and then slamming shut again before anyone could make it through, a shower of sparks issuing forth from a console accompanied by a shouted curse. It was as if the environment couldn't remain still for more than a handful of seconds, never holding long enough to trust.

“Maintenance hub’s up ahead,” one of his troopers called, checking the readout on his wrist display. “If anything’s still being coordinated, it’ll be coming from there.”

“Then we hold there,” Jorren said. “Keep moving.”

Taking in the chaos around him, Jorren couldn't see how anything was possibly being coordinated. They reached the hub just as another flicker of lights overhead rolled down the corridor accompanied by a rain of sparks from the lighting grid. The hall was then dropped into darkness for just a moment as Jorren stepped through the door into the maintenance center just beyond.

"Stang it, Bolven! Keep those surges coming down the mains from making it out onto the grid!" a shouted order cut through the general anarchy that dominated.
