Deputy Grand Master Report #2 - The Name is Titles. Clan Titles.

header

Introduction

Hello everyone,

This report covers several updates to the Brotherhood's Clan Title policy.

For many years, the Clan Title system has periodically become a source of conflict within our community. While many clans have used these titles exactly as intended, as an honor recognizing members who have made exceptional contributions to their clan, the system has also repeatedly generated disputes over subjective selection, inconsistent standards, perceived favoritism, and internal disagreements over who should or should not receive a title.

After many discussions over a number of years involving many different leaders in the club, the Grand Master and I concluded that the existing policy was no longer sufficient. Rather than remove Clan Titles entirely, we chose to preserve the system while establishing a fair, transparent, and objective framework for earning them.

These changes are not a reaction to any single incident. They are the culmination of years of recurring discussions across multiple clans and multiple administrations. Our goal is simple: preserve what makes Clan Titles meaningful while removing the recurring sources of conflict that have surrounded them.

Clan Title Policy

The Clan Title Policy has now been updated. The full policy is available on the wiki, but the most significant changes include:

  • Clan Titles are honorific distinctions recognizing service and contributions to a clan. They do not grant additional authority, privileges, or status beyond the title itself.
  • Every clan must establish clear, measurable, and publicly documented requirements for earning its Clan Title. Subjective standards, secret criteria, popularity contests, or invitation-only systems are no longer permitted.
  • Each clan's requirements will be published on the Clan Title Census page alongside the roster of members who have earned the title.
  • Once a member satisfies their clan's published requirements, the title should be awarded consistently to every qualifying member.
  • If a clan chooses not to establish or maintain an approved set of requirements, the default requirement will be earning 2,000,000 Clan Credits.
  • Members who leave a clan and later return may have their previously earned Clan Title restored, provided they still satisfy that clan's published requirements.
  • Clan Titles remain permanent recognitions. They cannot be revoked except in the limited circumstances described by policy and only with consultation from the Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master, and Justicar.

Consuls were notified of these upcoming changes on Friday evening. With the policy now finalized, each clan has until site rollover on August 25th to work with the DGM Staff to establish and approve their objective requirements.

FAQ

To get ahead of some questions I am sure people will have.

Will current Clan Title holders lose their titles?

No. These changes are not retroactive. Members who have already earned a Clan Title will keep it regardless of the new requirements their clan establishes.

Why not simply remove Clan Titles entirely?

That option was seriously considered during policy discussions. Ultimately, we felt Clan Titles still serve a valuable purpose by recognizing members who have made lasting contributions to their clans. The goal of these changes is to preserve that recognition while eliminating many of the issues that have repeatedly surrounded the system.

Can each clan still choose its own requirements? Yes. Every clan retains the ability to define what earning its Clan Title means. The only requirement is that those standards must be objective, measurable, publicly documented, and consistently applied to every member. Can a clan still make earning its title difficult?

Absolutely.

Nothing in this policy requires Clan Titles to become easy to obtain. We expect them to remain meaningful achievements. The change is not about lowering standards; it is about ensuring those standards are fair, transparent, and equally available to every member.

Can clans still have traditions surrounding their titles?

Yes.

This policy governs how a Clan Title is earned, not how a clan celebrates or honors members who receive it. Clans remain free to recognize new title holders however they choose.

Will clans be forced to use Clan Credits?

No.

The two-million Clan Credit requirement is simply the default if a clan chooses not to establish its own approved criteria. Clans are encouraged to develop objective standards that best reflect their own culture and history.

Message to the Consuls

For transparency’s sake, I have included the message sent to the Consuls on Friday evening here:

Over the years (and in recent months) we have seen recurring issues surrounding the clan title system. While many members view these titles exactly as intended, as an honor recognizing exceptional contributions to their clan, they have also too often become a source of unnecessary drama. We have seen clan titles treated as exclusive social groups, perceived as conferring status above other members, and become the subject of disagreements over internal processes, expectations, and eligibility.

To be clear, clan titles have always been intended to serve a single purpose: recognizing meaningful contributions to a clan. They are honorific distinctions, nothing more and nothing less. Unfortunately, it has become clear that our current hands-off approach has allowed inconsistent practices to develop that have repeatedly led to avoidable conflict. As a result, we will be implementing a standardized policy governing how clan titles are awarded.

Rather than removing the system entirely, we want to preserve what makes it meaningful while ensuring it is administered fairly and transparently across every clan.

Once the policy is published, each clan will have 30 days to establish an objective, transparent standard for awarding its clan title. The specific metric is yours to determine, provided it is clear, measurable, and consistently applied. Both Vizsla and Naga Sadow already use a straightforward requirement of earning 2 million clan credits, which serves as an excellent example of the type of objective standard we are looking for. Should a clan choose not to establish its own criteria within the allotted time, that standard will become the default for that clan.

Additionally, while this will not be a formal policy, I want to strongly encourage everyone to reconsider maintaining private Discord channels exclusively for clan title holders. With objective criteria replacing subjective selection, we also want to move away from creating the perception of an "inner circle" within a clan. Every member contributes to their clan's success, regardless of whether they hold a clan title, their rank, or how long they have been in the Brotherhood. We want our community to recognize achievement without unintentionally creating divisions between members.

The policy language is still being finalized, and I'll share it with all of you as soon as it is ready. I wanted to give everyone advance notice so you have time to begin thinking about what objective standard would best fit your clan before the 30-day implementation period begins.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss potential criteria before the policy is released, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Change to long-standing traditions is rarely easy, and I recognize that some members will disagree with aspects of this update. That's okay. Our responsibility, however, is to ensure our policies continue to serve the Brotherhood as a whole. We believe these changes preserve the spirit and prestige of Clan Titles while making the process of earning them clearer, fairer, and more transparent for everyone.

Thank you all for reading. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, comments, snide remarks, or just want to chat, feel free to message me on Discord or shoot me an email [Log in to view e-mail addresses].

Unfortunate that events, past and present, have led to this having to be implemented, but it is warranted.

This is the way!

So I don't like this change at all.

That said: Is the intent that the requirements are subject to approval, or just that they have to be objective?

No more keep away? Bravo.

Hell yeah!

This is the way.

Seconding Howie's question there. Are Clans actually going to be free to set their own requirements, or will they be subject to DGM approval?

Per policy: "Clan titles are awarded based on an objective standard of requirements established by the Clan. The Clans have the right to determine this standard for who will receive a Clan title. This system must be a set of objective requirements that are measurable, publicly documented, and applied consistently to every member. Requirements may not include elections, nominations, sponsorships, invitations, interviews, or any other discretionary approval process. Clans will organize this objectively measured system of their choosing with consultation of the Deputy Grand Master and their staff. Any member who satisfies the established requirements shall receive the Clan title."

As long as it is a clearly defined objective and measurable metric, clans can go wild. DGM oversight is merely "is this ACTUALLY objective and measurable" and making sure the information is defined and publicly available.

finally a great re-work I can get behind

Thanks for clarifying!

As a member for nearly 20 years, the latter half having been spent in the rogues, I like to check-in periodically on the state of the DB—an online club that has had a profound impact on my life. For the first time ever, I was disappointed to read a news post stating a decision from the DC that did not include the consensus of the brotherhood. This doesn't read like a process that is meant to support the club, to unite it; but, instead, to remove autonomy from every clan in the Brotherhood in the one thing they truly have a say over. I'm all for making things more accessible for those who otherwise would not have a voice, and support that... But this is in the wrong decision and is an overstep by the DC.

"After many discussions over a number of years involving many different leaders in the club, the Grand Master and I concluded that the existing policy was no longer sufficient."

This statement makes me very concerned for the future of the brotherhood, and I do not feel my voice is acknowledged or reflected in this decision. I urge the DGM and the leadership of the brotherhood to rewalk this decision. Instead, pause the deadline, take and listen in earnest the feedback that no doubt is coming from leaders across the club, and come to a consensus that represents the thoughts and ideas the members this decision affects.

Also as a member of nearly 20 years, I fully support this change. The oligarchical process of a popularity club is more of a turn off than "we want hard metrics for why you're doing what you're doing". Whether I deserved it or not, there were times where I felt like I was passed up for a Clan title because I wasn't a friend of people or I didn't make myself known in the late 2000s to be remembered enough. It would have been nice to know how close or far I was to that metric.

Again, not saying I deserved it. But there were members whose accolades were "was BTL, AED, and QUA for 2015" and then hadn't been seen in 3 years, and then they got Clan title as an "old friend". Doing quadruple that work and then being ignored was a huge turn off, and part of the reason I left that Clan. That same Clan group awarded a title to someone who hasn't been in the Clan for 7 years and the last unit that member was in was not said Clan :P

It's painful to put a lot of work into something and not be seen. That's more poisonous for the future of the DB than "muh Clan titles!"

I also think it's quite clear at this point: this is not a democracy. And I can quite admit that sometimes (not all the time) but sometimes members need rules given to them rather than asking their opinion on something (again, of which Atra and Xen did). I can't think of a more tumultuous example of this of when for some reason we held an election to see if Drac should be JST or not. I was adamantly no, but I fully regret that decision. I barely knew the guy beyond his time as FIST. But now knowing what I know and knowing him a bit better, I regret not actively fighting for him. The guy is a freakin' champion and "the will of the people" was not a good thing in that instance.

But again, years and years of people either leaving or getting PO'd at Clan titles adds up. It's not a bad change. It's not even a huge change. It's simply saying "reveal your measures for achieving the Clan title" and if it's anything similar to "our favorite person" or "popularity contest" then that's not really a good thing.
