Fist Report - 2022 Retrospective and Data Round-Up

header

Introduction

So first a quick administrative note, Nora is staying on in a new role as the multimedia magistrate. She brings a ton of experience in streaming and the Fist office to the table. More to follow on what that’s going to look like in the new year. No one applied for the community events magistrate slot sad tiger noises so I’ll keep it open for now and keep an eye out for promising candidates to approach directly.

This report is mostly about 2022 and a round-up of the various data points.

2022 Gaming Data

So here is the data on what you all have been playing (or at least submitting to the site) in 2022:

Casual Gaming Queue

2022 was the first full calendar year with Casual Gaming Queue and included the first vendetta that supported it. After some data cleanup and consolidating some submissions into meaningful titles this is what we have for the year. I’ve sorted this by unique members in the submissions and then by number of submissions, so how many people played the game and how many times was it submitted.

I added some identifiers to the Casual Queue submissions because I was curious about where people were playing games and whether a game being free or paid had any effect.

CasualbyPlatform

We have a pretty good mix of platforms with cross-platform and browser/mobile games making up the lion’s share.

CasualbyCost

While Free-to-play is the majority I was expecting it to be a larger share.

Supported Games

I left casual queue in the submissions here for a point of comparison. This is pulled directly from the site so “Matchmaking” generally refers to PVP and everything else is PVE.

Platform Submissions Unique participants
Casual Gaming Queue 343 84
Star Wars: The Old Republic 270 46
Halo: Infinite 209 45
Heroes of the Storm (PvE) 156 35

Star Wars: Squadrons Matchmaking 72 22
Star Wars: Squadrons vs AI 28 19
Battlefront 2 (2017) 73 18

Star Wars: Squadrons Matchmaking 7 15
Mario Kart 8 55 14
Star Wars: The Old Republic Matchmaking 21 13

Overwatch 10 8
Apex: Legends 246 7
Star Wars Customizable Card Game (Online) 38 6
Diablo 3 8 5

Destiny 2 Matchmaking 5 4
Heroes of the Storm 2 4
Star Conflict 3 2
Star Conflict Matchmaking 1 2
Destiny 2 1 2
Star Wars: Squadrons Matchmaking 1 2

Supported

I combined PVE and PVP for this chart. Now this is just raw number of submissions. Apex is a bit of outlier because while it’s a large number of submissions it’s a relatively small group doing the submissions. This is why unique participants is probably the biggest metric I look at when it comes to evaluating a platform.

Top Submitters for 2022

I like looking at who does the screenshot submissions over a period of time. These are the top twenty submitters for 2022, with the unique members they submitted for. Be sure to pat them on the back for what they do for our community. Not me though, it’s kind of my job :P

2022 Reflections

So based on the data and a bit of my personal observation/intuition, I would say the gaming community is overall healthy with room for growth. The party tool on discord sees fairly regular use, which is good to see, and members join each other in games fairly regularly. An area of growth for 2023 I’ve identified is more people submitting their activity at all. We all have single-player games or groups of people we game with outside the club and that’s fine. From my official point of view I want to ensure that the club has the right incentives in place and have removed any barriers or impediments that discourage people from submitting. I think the XP system will have impacts on gaming in 2023 when people can see that direct connection between clusters and competition submissions and getting where they want to be in the club.

The games we added in 2022, Mario Kart and SW:CCG haven’t quite panned out like I wanted to. While I will be giving Dead By Daylight and Deep Rock Galactic closer looks in the near future I don’t see any games currently out that have that critical mass of people playing it consistently. I have high hopes for stuff that’s coming out in 2023 like Diablo 4.

Turelwantsyou

I have posted as much data as I practically could so you could look at it along with your own observations. I’ll be running a #asktheFist all weekend long in discord so if you have a question or comment about 2022 in gaming please drop it in chat. I want this to be the start of a conversation.

How many instances of Kamjin is Kamjin? Gotta give the metrics that matter lol

Yay charts! Look at Tik Tak Toe leading the way 💪

It’s great to see Casual Gaming on top. Look forward to seeing how the new XP promotion system rewards the gaming community.

Great first year, Turel.

Good numbers. 👍
