Escaping Fate

Eighteen months ago

New Tython

Ordain Vonoro Spaceport

“The House needs its leaders - all of them.” Liam’s voice echoed across the distance between them as his Miraluka Aedile swatted aside another blaster shot.

“It’s the only way,” a young teenage boy panted, his concentration hell-bent on terrifying the army of soldiers that were laying siege to their retreat. The Spaceport offered their only hope of survival, of fleeing New Tython so that they could return and overthrow the Mad King, Cy Thuron, at a later date. “We have to do… whatever it takes.”

“That’s not your body your choosing to throw away!” Liam chastised the boy.

The darkness drained from the boy’s eyes, leaving behind forest green irises as Denath released control of Elleron’s body. The boy glanced over his shoulder as Liam and Morotheri approached. Another blaster bolt sped past, this one closer. The troops were recovering, their aim improving; soon, they would all be killed. Yet, the boy did not move. “You’re right, Liam,” Elleron shouted. “The House needs its leaders.”

Elleron lashed out with the Force, throwing Liam and Morotheri into the hangar. His lightsaber flew out, severing the external controls and sealing the door shut. The young Jedi sighed and turned to face the advancing soldiers, raising his silver blade in a final salute as he recited the Jedi Code.

Shots ricocheted against the blade as one of the commanding officers from the mercenary army, the BlackStar Contractors, took careful aim with her blaster, her brilliant blue eyes like sapphires staring down the barrel. She watched and waited, like a spider in its web, waiting for just the right moment to squeeze the trigger…

Elleron fell.

The female commanding officer kicked the boy’s body over and stared at his scarred face. Her shot had struck the right side of the Jedi’s face, and he lay there, motionless. She reached down to check for a pulse as the other soldiers rushed to the hangar. Some of the BlackStar mercenaries gathered around, their rifles at the ready. “Is that the one we were warned about?” one of them asked. “The one we were ordered to capture alive?”

“Of course he is, Caan. Did you not see what he did back there? The entire army. Utterly useless.” She placed her head on his chest, listening carefully for any trace of a heartbeat. Caan aimed his rifle slowly.

“To hell with orders. Little bastard is dangerous. I say we kill him.”

“He’s already dead,” Adan declared as she rose to her feet. “Alek will not be pleased. There was a sizeable bonus offered.”

“What the hell for?”

“Thuron said he was possessed by a great power, a power that could be transferred.” Adan stared at Elleron’s corpse, her mind racing with possibilities. “If I had that kind of power I’d keep it all to myself...”

“I reckon it’s a bunch of Bantha poodoo,” Caan snorted. “This Thuron is a couple of credits short of a full balance.”

“Doesn’t matter any more,” Adan replied as she hoisted Elleron’s corpse onto her shoulders. “Jump on the radio and tell Alek he’s worm food. I’ll deliver the prize personally. Maybe there’s something we can salvage from this.”

“Your funeral.”

Adan turned and marched towards the nearest troop transport, her ear firmly pressed against Elleron’s ribs as she calculated her next move. Thuron believed the boy could transfer great power to him, and Alek had planned to steal him away and take that power for himself. A sizeable reward was offered, dead or alive, but what were credits compared to the might of the Force?

She knew she would have to be quick to escape the city. To hide in the wilderness.

And one day, to return.

Lub dub.

Giving Thanks

One of the responsibilities I have as Aedile is to try and ensure you are properly awarded for your efforts. My previous tracking system was woefully inadequate, so I overhauled it and designed something that works a lot better for me.

During this process, I reviewed everyone here and with some excellent help from the Master at Arms office (thank you Evant and Aabsdu!) I was able to provide awards to 23 people. It’s the largest round of awards I’ve ever handed out, and while there is one more I am waiting to hear back from, I want to take the time to thank each of you for being an active part of our House.
