House Address - Frogs In A Pot

Unmarked Tyranus Header

Tyrants,

Dooku

I hope you all are doing well! As summer comes to a close this week, I hope you all get a chance to enjoy some sunshine and final beach days before the leaves start falling. As I sip on a PSL while I write this (#NotSponsored), I’m quite aware of the changing seasons and I’m glad my report structure has lined up with the cosmos.

As you may remember from my last report, I’ve outlined how I will be reporting to you, the membership, over my term as Quaestor. As a refresher, I prefer to provide a House Address every quarter and then proceed to follow that up with three reports providing status updates for the sake of accountability. These Addresses will outline the theme of what we are working on for each quarter, and will act as our mandate during that time. This also has the dual nature of outlining any projects we are working on, so those interested can reach out and join.

A further reminder: your opinion matters! This is a joint venture between all who call Tyranus home and I’ll be striving to create opportunities to keep you included. Whether this is in decisions that impact us all, being represented in the shared story we tell, or in the competitions created specifically for ourselves - these opportunities will be designed with each of you in mind. As this address was created, using the feedback I received from the House Survey and direct messages I’ve had with many of you.

Including those who helped create the following fiction with either their characters or their input on the story. Thank you to you all, and I’m happy to use the stars from the Aliso Summer Festival: Arden, Khryso, and Alaris (a late addition since transferring in). Note some other Tyrants who show up in the fiction. Check the house update out below:

House Fiction Update - Frogs In A Pot

Korada Monastery

Korada Monastery

Aliso, Aliso System

1 Month Post-Invasion

His morning started slowly, with drowsiness as thick as the fog that had rolled in over the night. Every muscle was stiff and his mind ached for caffeine but, for the first time in a month, the man felt relieved. There was no sense of urgency as he roused himself from his makeshift cot and made his way to the brewing station, fumbling to find the years-old caf beans they had discovered abandoned here. When the machine began its familiar sound of trickling brew, Däv Ide felt the urge within him to find a tree.

Stepping outside into the cool morning mist, Däv was reminded how peculiar this world was. As if caught in an endless autumn, Aliso was always cold and dreary. Little light was able to pierce the overcast skies and the vegetarian of the world suffered, with endless plains covered in browning grass and few trees able to reach their proper height. The lack of ground cover had been a constant struggle for Däv and his comrades as they fled from the world’s capital, having lost the war they brought upon this world. The few that survived the initial assault had been further decimated by the open terrain and the opportunities it created for those that hunted them.

Remembering their flight caused Däv’s hands to shake as he reached for the zipper of his trousers.

TL;DR:
  • Surviving CoM soldiers from the invasion attempt to find refuge in the ruins of Korada Monastery
  • Khryso and Arden slaughter most of the group, with some flashy marksmanship and a caf pot to someone’s face, those who surrender are taken prisoner and the pair question the directives of the new Right Hand of Dread
  • Sinya witnesses the horrors of Tyranus Square, another directive from Raiju as he attempts to stomp out any concern of his Jedi past, where prisoners are kept like cattle awaiting a chance to be spared
  • Sinya meets Doku, a new recruit for Talzin, and announces a change to the new arrival
  • Sinya & Doku head to the Aliso Summer Festival, where they meet Alaris, Arden, & Khryso who have provided prisoners for the final event - a grand battle between all the prisoners
  • The group of Tyrants meet their new Quaestor, who provides an example about the dangers of complacency while the group witnesses the fate of the prisoners

Summit Changes & The Fate of Talzin

I’m sad to announce that Sinya Ani has stepped down from the role of Battleteam Leader. This is an unfortunate event, but I will always be the first to say that #RealLifeComesFirst. As someone who also has their own business, I can attest to the difficult balancing act that comes from this venture but Sinya has been able to manage this with style to this point and we all owe her a break so she can focus on making things a success. We also owe her a great many thanks for leading Talzin up until this point. As an old-timer who is passionate about this club, it’s been great to see new faces rise up and deliver excellence under the Plageuis banner. Well done, and I’m happy to hear you’ll be sticking with the membership when time allows.

With this resignation, I was given a difficult choice to make. Talzin is a very small team that deserves a passionate leader who can handle the responsibilities of being a content creator in this club. On top of this, House Tyranus is in need of a succession plan - as I don’t intend to be here forever. I have career aspirations that will come to fruition in the next 6-8 months and that means that I need to set up someone to successfully take over as Quaestor when that time comes. Unfortunately, the participation levels in the GJW & Aliso Summer Festival have suggested that we don’t have the active membership base to warrant both a new Aedile and a new Battleteam Leader. Therefore I’ve chosen to shutter Battleteam Talzin, moving all current members into the main House unit. This will be a temporary action while we build up the membership base and I desire to reopen the team once we have the active membership and leadership to do so.

In the meantime, I will be keeping an eye out for an Aedile but I won’t be taking applications though. A key commitment from anyone that wants to be a summit member in Plagueis, whether BTL to CON, is to obtain 65% participation in all scheduled clan & club events. As mentioned, we haven’t seen this in our last events and I don’t want to set anyone up for failure. Instead, I want to provide an open opportunity. Pro Bowl is coming up and we will reassess things immediately after that. For those interested in what it takes to be a summit member, you can look at the guide here or come have a chat with me.

House Direction - #ComplacencyIsTheEnemy

I’ve very much enjoyed our conversations over the past month. When I put out a call for feedback, I was still very new to this unit and wasn’t aware of the preferences that each of you had. Since that time, through a variety of media, I’ve been able to develop an understanding of what brings you all here, what you are interested in doing, and how we should go about doing it. And this has given a sense of direction we can follow while adjusting our path where needed.

From these conversations, I’ve been able to identify one of the biggest obstacles in the way of our success; complacency. As you can see represented in this month’s fiction, there are dangers with assuming things will never change or that we don’t need to improve the things around us. When we don’t take charge of our own destiny we are forfeiting it to the will of others and the sad reality of a club like this can be summarized in a familiar phrase: “use it or lose it”.

We exist purely on the activities and efforts you all put in. Without those, this house/clan/club wouldn’t exist. Just like you, I have a part of this too and I intend to make the best of the opportunity I’ve been presented here. So let me outline some things we are going to work on over the next three months:

Our Community

OurCommunity

The image above is taken from the summary sheet of the responses you all gave me. And you can clearly see that there are two major reasons that people are interested in this club; 1) Star Wars, & 2) Friends/Social Connections.

OurCommunity2

I’m not surprised by this information, but I’m very happy to confirm it. Star Wars and hangouts or friendships and nerd-outs, are really my two favourite things in the world. And I want to lean in hard on this as we rally our community. That’s why we are going to work on developing the following:

  • Tyranus Hosted Socials/Hangouts
    • Watch Parties
    • Game Nights
    • RP Events
    • Trivia
  • Events & activities geared towards getting to better know your housemates
  • Discussion Prompts
  • Celebrating your successes
  • Making sure individuals are rewarded for their efforts (#ComplacencyIsTheEnemy)

Our Competitions

Another notable reason why people stick around is the competitions - hell yes! One of my primary roles as Quaestor is to ensure you all are getting your fill on this and I want to tailor this according to what you guys are interested in rather than throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. That’s why I’m going to be watching what you all are participating in and mirroring that for Tyranus-specific events. To get us started, I even have some inside information from the responses you all gave:

OurCompetitions

We have a healthy spread in the house across all activities, so we will focus on being inclusive on all of these but I’m clearly seeing high levels of interest in gaming & fiction while lore items and DJB platforms (like the ACC, SA, & wiki) are on the lower end. Expect to start seeing Tyranus-hosted events that cater to these interests, and remember if you want to see more of a particular event - participation is your vote for keeping them coming.

*Note: In the efforts to provide participation opportunities as a clan, I will be hosting the majority of events as clan-level opportunities. As will be discussed below, anything that directly impacts the story of the house will be directed by Tyranus-Only events.

Our Shared Story

OurSharedStory3

The last issue we will be making a mandate for this quarter is the drive to create a shared story. As I look at the image above, once again based upon your responses, I take green’s vote and add it to each of the story group & competition categories and it makes it clear that most people want to be involved in the story in some way. Either they prefer to directly be involved with the planning as a story group, or they want to see their efforts rewarded by directing the path of the story.

I am happy to commit to a balanced approach to this: where a story group will be formed to provide an ongoing narrative for the House, while creating competition opportunities for winning entries to decide milestone moments. Those who aren’t writers, but still enjoy the stories and want to be involved - I will also commit to offering milestone events as a rotation through our most popular competition types.

For those interested in joining Tyranus’ story group, please contact me via email or discord.

OurSharedStory1

In addition to learning about how involved people want to be in the story creation, I’ve also learned about people’s preferences for story arcs as a mixed approach was the unanimous selection for what people LIKED. And as you can see below, short unconnected events was voted as the most DISLIKED. Expect to see our shared story reflecting this once I have the story group in place and Pro Bowl has concluded.
