Fiction

Governers Office, Tythas City

“Congratulations!” One of the assistants in the office said to Jon as he passed by.

“Hey! Congrats!” Another chimed in as well. They both seemed to be congratulating Jon for some reason. Whatever they might’ve known he was not privy to that information yet. Something had happened, what it might be he didn't know, yet, but for some reason it was unsettling to him. Congratulations meant something good, but what could they have been referring to? He continued down the hall with the slight pep in his step, his report about how the funding campaign was going in his hands, with enough work they’d be reaching their goal in no time.

There was a feeling in his gut he couldn’t quite place. A warning that kept bugging him as he made his way down the hallways. “It’s probably nothing serious…” he convinced himself he was putting too much thought into it. Soon enough he was at his Mandalorian commanders office, yet the feeling he should be worried about something persisted. As he opened the doors he was greeted with the usual sight, Asani going through papers and plans mumbling something to herself, helmet on the desk pointing toward the door. Always on guard as if anything could explode at any instant.

”Ah Jon, welcome back.” She stated, looking up at him with an odd smirk on her face, something was definitely up. What kind of news was she about to hit him with, he wondered, he chose to play along at that moment, maybe he wouldn’t have to wait too long for the lothcat be let out of the bag.

“Governer Asani, good to see you, I’m here to deliver an update on the funding campaign.” He began his usual report while she nodded along listening intently as he detailed how all of the funding was coming along.

“Well I’m certainly pleased with the current state of things. Which reminds me, congratulations Jon” she said as she grabbed a few odd things from the desk.

“You’re the third person to say that to me today which makes me wonder what it might be you’re congratulating me for…” he replied, his face moving from a somewhat cheerful disposition to something more stern.

”On your promotion” she stated matter of factly. He stared for a moment as if wondering what it was that he heard might've been correct.

”Promotion?” He asked brows furrowing in confusion.

”Yes, you’ll be taking over for me. The paperwork's been handled, all that’s needed now is for you to move in.” Asani stated while grabbing her helmet with a gentle smile.

That’s when he had noticed, the office seemed a bit too empty, devoid of its usual array of scattered weapons and papers.

”Wait you can't just promote me like this, what about the campaign? What about Project Pathfinder? You can't just drop me into desk duty like this!” He complained, his voice clearly showing he was agitated, as Asani sighed looking apologetic.

”I’m sorry Jon, but I’m needed elsewhere…” she seemed conflicted about ‘dumping’ desk duty onto him.

“That’s not good enough!” He retorted, sighing angrily.

“Partys tonight, enjoy it, take it all in while you can.” She commented avoiding his complaints. The decision was final; it seemed there wasn’t anything he would be able to do.

Later that evening

"And with this I leave you in the capable hands of our great Jon." Asani stated during their little impromptu party as a welcoming to the new governor.

“I hope you know I don't take any joy in pinning you down like that…” Asani commented to Jon while walking around their gathering. He looked down at her, his expression a mixture of controlled rage and a mask to play the perfect man.

”You owe me big time for this.” he replied, his tone steady.

”I’ll buy a drink and owe you a favor. We’ll call it even.” She jest.
