“Nothing?”

“I will never help you.”

“You'd be surprised how often people say that.”

Alaris deactivated the projector and slipped it back into his coat. “You know, this is usually the point where I'm expected to threaten you. Pain, imprisonment, dreadful consequences for your associates. I've never found threats particularly persuasive.” He glanced toward the dark tree line beyond the road. “I much prefer reputations.”

The prisoner's expression faltered. Alaris noticed.

“Oh,” he said with a small smile. “You've heard of the Bear Sith.”

Somewhere within the forest came a slow, deliberate metallic impact. The Technocrat looked toward the sound. Another followed. Slow. Deliberate. Metal striking something hard.

Alaris folded his hands behind his back and allowed the silence between impacts to do most of the work. “The stories have become wonderfully exaggerated. That's the trouble with surviving witnesses. They're terrible historians. For starters, he’s not even Sith.”

Another impact sounded from the trees. The Technocrat tried to look unimpressed, but his eyes remained fixed on the forest.

Alaris stepped closer. “I'm going to ask you once more. Where is the communications hub?”

The prisoner looked back at him and lifted his chin. “I'll die before I tell you anything.”

“We're all just tickled to hear you say that.”
