Wiki Report: March 2021

header

Yeah sorry, y'all. No funny puns today. Just feels like I have seen one too many of those March-ing around. Okay, so maybe just one. Will try to keep to that. (Maybe.)

Well, it has been a weird last couple of months in the real lives of many of us. A lot of smaller changes have been happening in the background and some projects were put on a backburner or kind of left to sit.

That said, as ever the Wiki is a living document of sorts: it can catalog all the changes our characters experience in minute and interesting ways, those not so well fitted to be included on a character sheet; they can tell about what strange, new worlds we might encounter; pages might be created to describe a new faction; pages might be devoted to long-held rivalries, or new friendships. I know this is something that I have said before. Even when it is quiet, there are still things stirring. It might be quiet sometimes, but it is a library for our Brotherhood.

Much like any library, it can get a bit dusty if it isn’t kept clean. Much like a library, what happens there might be quieter than in venues like gaming or fiction. But back on the cleanliness thing- the month of March is going to be devoted to a bit of “spring cleaning”. There is still plenty to do as the Wiki has at least ten years of grease and grime in some spots, and of course folks can always add more layers of content to sift through.

So, I will try to keep this report brief so that my staff and I can hopefully get back into the swing of things properly.

Current Wiki Projects

  • We are going to review the formerly-featured articles to see what pages can be brought back up to shiny ‘featured’ status under the current guidelines [Lead: Wiki Tribune, though final lead tba] Reviewing “Under Construction” pages to see which ones need to be brought up to date, which have been abandoned, and which can comfortably lose that old tag [Lead: tba]
  • General Maintenance [Lead: Tribune, but work to be Team-wide]
  • Timeline Review- [status: we keep squishing the ‘bugs’ but they keep popping up] this will require the staff as a whole to look over timelines, to do a bit of digging and reading individual pages to hopefully bring a more consistent timeline to the Wiki as a whole. This was attempted once and seems to have been less successful than first thought.
  • “Project Legacy”- a long term kind of pet-project to go back and chronicle as much about past DB events as can be gathered from what is on our current site. Some things are little but mentioned on the Wiki, and some have been lost to Vendetta sites long gone, for example. So we get to research. When that fails, the hope is to chat up ‘older’ members who can tell some youngins’ like the Tribune what happened in ‘the good old days’ when they had to walk uphill BOTH WAYS to get to the Shadow Academy and the Grand Master ate planets!

More projects may be added, but this seems like a good start for now.

Wiki Change Log

  • Moved the Image Category Mandos from ‘Category:Images-Mandos’ to ‘Category:Images-Mandalorians’.
  • lots of smaller tweaks that, while not particularly noteworthy do keep things rolling along
  • as usual, Essik has been all over the Wiki making lots of changes.*

Featured Article

Maybe this month’s Featured Article is one that should have already had this designation. It is the product of no less than three of our members, and while we haven’t seen as much of this group as I wish we had it is still not a bad read.

March 2021 - The Severian Principate

Severian_Principate

The Severian Principate is a rare Imperial Warlord state which not only endured but thrived following the Empire’s collapse. Originally a network of mining worlds and orbital facilities in the Kastolar Sector, it existed to fuel the Empire’s war machine. This changed with the governorship of Lucian Niatinus, a commander disillusioned with the Emperor’s self-destructive policies. Devoted to improving the lives of his citizens and secretly allying with the smugglers and pirates from the nearby Hutt Space, he sought to create an ordered state free of the tyranny which inspired the Rebellion.

Niatinus was one of the first Warlords to declare independence following Palpatine’s death. Culling the ranks of those hidebound by COMPNOR dogma, he took the first steps to abolish slavery within his territories and gave former serfs a voice in his new government. Through the promise of protection and trade deals, the Principate was able to quickly encompass nearby systems and expand its commerce to Hutt Space and the Core.

Wikipedian of the Month

Well, looking at the fact that he has done so much editing to the Wiki of late- enough that he has a spot in the Wiki change log, it seems that once again the familiar face of Essik Lyccane will be that of your Wikipedian of the month for March of 2021. Seriously, this dude does a lot of small edits that help to keep the Wiki in a better shape than it could be otherwise. I have said it before, but given that he is NOT a member of the wiki staff, that is quite admirable to take on!

Final Words

I have probably said some variant of this in every report to date. If I haven’t I feel like I have. We live in a shared galaxy far, far away and the wiki is just another way that we detail our particular corner of the galaxy. This is our sandbox, our playground to flesh out. I mean, yeah we have certain constraints within Star Wars to keep in, but it is still a big, wild west out there with lots of worlds and critters and species yet to be encountered or described.

Don’t necessarily be content to build a Hoth or a Tatooine. Stretch those creative muscles. Make new stories, new worlds, new races and go where no Star Wars fan has gone before. Or even just add your own twist to the same sorts of things we all know and love. Or maybe at least the things that some at least know and tolerate. Give interesting things for the Wiki Tribune to read (I love seeing what folks create) but and more important than that, I hope we can continue to create and see more interesting places and people for our fellow members to interact with.

As ever, if you have any questions that crop up while you are Wiki’ing it up out there, feel free to throw an email or Telegram PM to the Wiki Tribune or the Wiki Staff. If you want some help with any aspect of the Brotherhood/Wiki I am able to, my box is open. Whatever problems that might crop up, I can assure that either my staff or myself are more than willing to help should you need us.

And now looking back at my report, I see that I declined to make any goofy jokes or wild images. So thus, I will leave you with….dancing Batman!

In the meantime I remain, as ever, Yours In Darkness,

Nice report, I look forward to the featured articles.

Lovely to hear from you on the staff. We always hope to be making wiki additions. Eventually, heh.

How will Under Construction pages be deemed to be abandoned and what will be done to them? No changes without contacting the creator if possible, yes? Is there some other tag for perhaps an "inactive" project that may be looked at again and/or an incomplete page?

I will be detailing the 'what we plan to do' in this next month's report in greater detail. Our initial pass of the UNDER CONSTRUCTION tags will be in part to see if a page passes muster to drop the tag. The next bit will include a list to start working down, but I don't have typically have staffers making significant content changes without good cause.

Of note: We do not plan to delete content as a rule of thumb.

Just to chime in to your concerns, Atty, as an old fogey Wiki Tribune of yor: Any page that isn't completed can possibly be a candidate for a stub tag. As far as contacting the creator of pages, the wiki is a communal project. The only pages that really confer any personal ownership are character pages (per the wiki policies), and then I guess units and DC office pages have some ownership based on their units. And anyone being concerned about content being changed or lost, any edits to wiki articles are catalogued, can be reverted, and all content is saved. Even deleted pages are never really gone.
