The Force Awakens: Teaser Trailer

NOW

That is all.

So, a football droid, the ugliest speederbike so far and a weird lightsaber? :P

There were X-Wings. That is all that was required.

X-wings skimming across the water and the millenium falcon narrowly missing the sand dunes

"a weird lightsaber? :P"

I don't think the DJB has room to talk when it comes to weird lightsabers, Malik. :P

and the Millenium Falcon is missing it's satellite dish......Now they can't get wifi to view this trailer

The Falcon's satellite dish got knocked off during Return of the Jedi due to Lando's crappy flying, did you never watch the film?! :P

Totally was like great another fake when the dude pops up...

It's been 30 years and they haven't replaced that dish yet? :P

Other than that weird morningstar-saber Sarin had once I don't think the DB sabers are that weird Viv :P

Well, it looks like they replaced it with a rectangular dish, so Abbrams can say he's, er, done something? :P

won't let me upload a photo of the sith I screen captured.

Lord Vexatus, I've only seen ROTJ 3,183 times. LOL

Lando promised not a scratch on her..........

For lightsabers, your forgetting the one dudes pink fork saber. The Xwings gave me a massive geekgasm, the droid was amusing. The stormtroopers were another geekgasm. The weird lightsaber I wasnt thrilled about, but eh.

To top it all off was my wife asking if they were remaking the originals or something....I wanted to re-educate her.

I'm so happy right now!

Not enough mangoes!

(OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORV!)

Me too Orvles... me too... I'm sort of speechless and in a happy glow :P

Although the weird looking lightsaber put me off, I've since read someone compare it to a broadsword and... it's growing on me.

The crossguard just seems pointless, unless it's just there for show :P

A random borking by Orvles :D

Well, Mal, yeah, if it had any practical use, the blade would go right down to the hilt, as the way it is currently, the crossguard would just get sliced off :P

The crossguard just seems pointless, unless it's just there for show :P

Or unless you want to stab someone in the face or cut their limbs off, but don't want to activate your main blade. Essentially it's the lightsaber equivalent of having spikes on the ends of your hilt's cross-guard :P

It looks like a longer blade than usual too... Lightclaymore here we come... wait a second..

OK, so apparently Abrams was in Alvaak.

At least it wasn't purple?

You're purple.

Darth Braveheart?

Episode VII Stormtroopers

Stormtrooper in the middle, standing slightly out of formation... aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?

Silly droid, Mark Hamill is playing luke, not a stormtrooper :P Also I noticed no one commenting about the 40 year old Lambda-class shuttle they are using on Tantooine.

Where did you see a Lambda?

Crossing over Tantooine by the two suns.

Yeah it Flys off really small like

I must be blind, I haven't seen that

The two side blades I would believe is more of a protection to keep another's lightsaber from sliding all the way down to lop off a wrist like Dooku had done to him.

Then again, a rap against someone's head with the hilt and instant lobotomies ensues

Saber Aside from the weird cross hilt thing, what about the crazy saber effects?

My thoughts about the teaser include:

  • Not a fan of the soccer ball droid
  • The cross saber thing is weird and doesn't make sense to me.
  • I don't really care much about x-wings or the Millennium Falcon. Looks like the circular radar dish was replaced with a rectangle one, though. And I have to admit, the x-wings do look rather slick.
  • While the speeder doesn't seem entirely out of place, it is definitely strange. I'd generally expect a speeder to be somewhat aerodynamic..
  • People are talking about the stick attached to the speeder in the closeup. They're comparing it to Maul's saber hilt. It's pretty long to be a saber. Reminds me of the vibroblades or whatever that you start out with in TOR before you get your lightsaber.

Conclusions:
I went into the teaser without having thought about what the movie might look like, so watching the teaser, I found myself surprised by how different it looked from all the Star Wars stuff we've been seeing for years. Obviously, everything in the prequels was made of high-gloss mirrors, but this teaser didn't have shiny stuff (I don't like shiny). But the biggest thing for me was that it felt very "earthy." It felt like I was watching a teaser for something that took place on Earth. This is probably just because there was no architecture visible in any of the shots that would have made it feel alien. I also think the biggest cause of the earthy feeling was the Sith scene in the forest. I guess I got used to the alien plant life from TOR, the Clone Wars series, etc. It's weird to see regular-looking trees now (Okay, look, I admit, I haven't watched RotJ in a long time, okay?)

Also: I watched through the teaser several times and didn't see the lambda shuttle. Am I blind or being trolled?
And to Brimstone: The problem with that is that the blades don't start at the hilt. If you slide your blade down that guy's, it'd just cut those side blades off, not block them. You'd still lose your hand.

On the saber:

  • The blade effect isn't new. We see the same effect in The Force Unleashed and in TOR; new to the movies, certainly, but not new to the franchise in any way.
  • What has changed, if anyone else noticed, is the saber sound effect - it's a little less... lightsaber. It's a lot more, say, Star Trek.
  • The cross-guard would be functional, but in a different way; it'd be more of a weapon than a defensive tool as saber blades 'bite' into a bind more than a real-world steel blade. You're also going to lose out on a fair chunk of the acrobatics and theatrics like the overhand twirls a saber duel is known for, so I'm interested to see how they change the fight choreography.

Yeah... I'm not sure what it was about the trailer, but all I could think was, "this doesn't feel like Star Wars". Might just be me, though, since the internet is splooging like crazy over it.

Honestly? I thought I'd been rickrolled by Yacks. The guy popping up was just too odd and startling, I actually laughed. It seemed like an odd teaser more than a serious movie trailer.

Nah, that's this link which got a lot of people yesterday :P

This trailer is very early, and it will be interesting to see what, if anything, makes it into the movie. This trailer was created with only one purpose: get people excited. To the Star Wars fanatics, it is to try and demonstrate "hey, something new, but still true to the original." To the more casual fans, this trailer shows the familiar things: Stormtroopers, lightsabers, the Falcon, TIE Fighters, etc.

I have no concern about the droid, other than it was there simply to show something different. Maybe they talked to the Dyson vacuum people... The X-wings looked nice, insofar as they are simply updated designs on an existing model; certainly interesting to see them flying against a terrestrial atmosphere/background, as opposed to space. The speeder that the girl was on is (my guess) some sort of utility/work craft. I don't think it would be meant for recreation, or fleeing the bad guys. Then again, if you live in the middle of no where (a la Tatooine desert farm), then you might only have one utility/recreation/running from the authorities vehicle, no matter how old or clunky. They could just have easily have replaced it with an F-150.

I, too, have concerns about the Star Trek influence, but that is more based on J.J.'s success with Star Trek and him using it as a model platform for this. At least, though, he has original characters, and isn't rebooting a franchise (we hope).

After reading through all these comments I have to say we are all biased. Weve been exposed to the old EU at one point or another. Even if you have never read a single book, watched a single show, this group has corrupted you. Keep in mind this needs to be viewed as someone who has never known anything but the movies (including the Prequels). We can pick and choose what we like, but at the end of the day we are geeks and will pick apart each and every piece of information we get until its released.

Also Im going to do a plug for the Recruitment Office. If you have a Facebook account and have not liked the Official DJB group (there are 2, one is defunct), minus 50 DKP for you! Check us out at https://www.facebook.com/darkjedibrotherhoodofficial

Also while I am put off by the saber, the rest looks good.

DKP were a terrible invention :P

We all know the second we heard Lord George sold to Emperor Disney, we were going to scrutinized everything. Then bringing in Jar Jar Abrams only made us more nervous.

It was expected to see changes. And unfortunately, most of us lived through the EU as our only resources to quench our thirst for more.

It is enevitable. We'll still stand in line and watch it. It's just something new

FIFA D2

The interesting thing about the ball-droid is there's a quote from Ralph McQuarrie where he and George's original ideas for R2 were some ball droid that rolled around... so despite having a very "Disney" appearance it's actually got its roots firmly in Star Wars, which is surprising.

The "crossguard" lightsaber originally made me think it looked impractical to deflect another lightsaber, but... I can see why they've done it this way, because the alternative (with the blade going right down to the hilt) would have looked ghastly (see here).

I personally feel that Abrams was an excellent choice for this movie, especially since CGI kinda damaged the P.T. Hard to act very well in big green room. And as for the Falcon......seriously we just saw original Falcon footage, on screen for the firs time since before half of us were born, and all you guys can fixate on is a stupid satellite dish. WTH? It's. The. Millennium. Bloody. Falcon. CELEBRATE FOOLS!!

Given lightsabers tendency to lock together when they meet rather than sliding down each other like steel, I see the cross guard being more offensive (trying to get them into or near the opponent's face and/or body during a "close" saber lock) than defensive (protecting your hands)

Saber lock

Imagine the red saber with a cross guard blades

Also in regards to the funky effect on the saber, I've seen some people suggesting that the Sith/darksider in the trailer may be an ancient Sith that has re-"awaken"ed and his saber is very old and less focused than modern ones. I don't really care, I just think it looks cool :P

Also, maybe someone should start a topic on the forum?

Important things to note with this trailer:

  1. The close ups of characters: Black Male Trooper, Female on a Speeder, Ethnic (possible latino, or is that a stretch) X-Wing pilot.

2.) Holy crap the X-Wings looked stunning. And I'm not even a Starfighter fan.

  1. The Lightsaber hilt design is f**king stupid, not even useful as a bludgeon or effective cross guard because you'd end up cutting your own hand off in the process of operating it.

I could buy the theory that it's a primitive design and the cross guards are heat-sink-ejectors, maybe. My bigger fear is that the antagonist is a cliche religious zealot.

Jesus. Take two:

Important things to note with this trailer:

1.) The close ups of characters: Black Male Trooper, Female on a Speeder, Ethnic (possible latino, or is that a stretch) X-Wing pilot. One of the biggest knocks on Star Wars, and the initial cast, was the lack of female and diversity. The trailer, I think, not so subtly calls out to fans saying, "Hey, look, we featured these elements on purpose to you in the teaser."

Not to question the merit of JJ's artistic ability, but I know how my industry works, and I know that marketing people actually think like that.

Marick didn't hit preview......

Get him wiki powers to be for not hitting preview before post.

where the hell do you guys see the Lambda? minutes and seconds please :P

so like is this an actual trailer? It seems... different

It's a teaser, not a trailer.
