Maximum Brevity Series 11: Kooki's Birthday

"Happy Birthday to Kooki"

As it's Amy's (Kooki in RL) 23rd birthday today (30th) I thought for a bit of fun we could write a small greeting and describe a present that either you or your character would present - this can be either for Amy, or for Kooki who is turning 44 in character.

Kooki's co-judging this one.

The word limit this time is a bit more generous - 500 words.

From Amy’s front door, there was a stern three knocks that echoed throughout the hall and front room. The heavy footsteps shortly followed as Amy approached the door and unlocked it. There in front of her covered in the sun’s rays, was a tall rectangular box. The box was wrapped in a shiny red plastic, with a purple bow neatly sat on top. The rest of the golden sprinkled purple bow was wrapped around all six sides without a crease. As Amy would box up the box, it felt light and cushioned. Bringing it inside, there was a leather-padded label hidden under the bow. As she placed the box on a waist-high table to gain better control, the label she read was hand-written. ‘Use it wisely,” With a neat comma next to it, as if by fountain pen. As she delicately unwrapped the purple ribbon, the red plastic would slowly fall through the air and reveal a lilac cardboard underneath, with a lilac lid. With a quickly rip and flip of the lid off by the excited Amy, a million multi-coloured skittles fountained from box, and three oval, transparent balloons popped out, each with the quote ‘Taste the rainbow!’ Tied to the bottom of the golden strings of the balloons, was a small, golden box, inlaid with silver writing. ‘Do not use it all at once,’ With the same fountain pen comma spiralling artistically.

As the balloons held up the small, gold box, a soft whirring could be heard. Then, the balloons began to rise as the box also elevated from the tall box. As it rose, the Spandau Ballet song Gold! was played from inside the tall box. Having a little dance as Amy probably would since it is her twenty-third birthday, the song played for a minute or so and then stopped before becoming annoying. As the song stopped, and Amy pulled the balloons off, she untied the silver ribbon and opened the lid of the small box. Inside was an old, silver pentagon-shaped fifty pence. It was obviously old, with some scratches and rounded sides. However, the faces of the coin shone brightly, as if it just left the London Mint itself. The box was laced with a purple silk fabric that cushioned the coin, and inside the lid of the golden box was a parchment of paper.

On the upper side of the note was a red, wax seal with a Capital ‘L’ on it. As Amy cracked the letter, the scent of orange zest escaped the letter and floated around the room. Inside the letter was a poem of some sort, as she read it, she was clear that the person was not quite as good of a poet.

“I would just like to say,
on this special day,
of yours if I may.

I would just like to take the time,
to sing this little song of mine,
and wish you a special remainder,
to kick back without being the daily grinder.

In this box I hold,
a coin with the queen’s nose,
it’s nothing great to behold,
and it’s not exactly a rose.
But I hope you will find,
some peace in mind,
that as we all grow old,
you can puff your chest and be bold,
to remember your childhood dreams,
and cherish all those dreams.

So as you rub the nose,
being reminded of your motherly woes,
take a step back from yourself,
and put that frown on the shelf,
you may feel you’re in pain,
but you’ll never be 23 again.

Happy Birthday!”
