Of Fire and Brimstone

“ — Aurora Flight, status!...Aurora One? Wing Commander?”

Dark brows furrow behind a viser as Captain Lio forcefully unclenched her hand from the decimator’s yoke and thumbed the communication fob hard. Hard enough it caused her co-pilot Vuth to glance over with a cursory look of concern.

“Status: Fine. All clear headed like the last two minute check,” her voice clipped behind her barely contained frustration. There was a static filled pause before she added on, swiftly cutting off the comm officer reply. “Now, if that’s all, Command, permission to turn port one-eighty degrees and assault?”

Several heartbeats passed as the pilot breathed heavily, fingers itching to spin the nose of this ship around regardless what they had to say. A couple more glances from her co-pilot, she shrugged their hand off and just stared at the Sinchi Mountains on their left, calculating how quick they could get back—

“Aurora One, redirect to Blindshot and wait for further orders.”

“No.”

“I repeat. Retreat. All aerial forces experiencing—”

“— Kark OFF!” The pilot slammed her fist into the radio’s control. The comm officer continued more firmly, the sound gravelly at the reduced volume level.

“Lio? I think we should head them—”

“Absolutely not! We don’t need to turn back, when we could end this fight right now!” Lio twisted the controls and started to veer the lead decimator back toward the battle ground, which drew a number of harsh responses from the rest of the flight. “No, Vuth, we’re going to end this.”

“You’re going to get everyone killed, you stupid-”

Vuth clutched hold of Lio’s wrist and yanked her hand from the yoke, interrupting the Captain in the middle of ordering the others to follow. The yelling continued, back and forth, hands ripping the controls to and thro between them and the ship swayed back and forth. With a growling shout of frustration Lio grabbed the co-pilot by the back of the helmet and slammed her head into the side of the cockpit, once, twice, three times. Dazed, ears ringing, all Vuth could do was blink through the blood pouring from her forehead and watch as Lio fumbled the controls in her rage, cursing her.

“Everyone else had fell in line, agreed to the order eagerly, yet Vuth couldn’t see.”

‘No, she could not could she? She doubted you, your sanity, when this can all end with one word. To release all your fire...’

Captain Lio shook her head lightly, a wave of something else than her rage, her anger at her superiors and their foes, passing over her. The VT-49 was half way back towards Ehltaetl National Park, crossing over the large island of Oacanogoc situated between the peninsula and the Northern mainland, when she flipped a clear case and slammed her fist down on the red button. An order shouted to the three decimators behind her.

A storm of missiles fell, released from the belly of the ships’ clutches, the compartment hatches closing. Wind whistled around them as they rocketed towards the earth, a piercing shriek before—

— smoke, dirt and stone exploded into the air, the rain of missiles impacting into the gaping mouth of the small mountain peak on the island. Seconds later, the earth quaked and cracked, the hill rupturing! Molten red viscous lava geysered into the air, chasing after billowing clouds of ash, gas and smoke. Large chunks of rocks were thrown and left tumbling down the slopes that fissured with each passing moment, long claw marks of fire etched into the island and expanded across the large bay to rake through the nature reserve and middle Ussun…

Captain Lio’s flight and her crew could only stare at the destruction, not moving to try and save the small fishing villages on the isle from the wall of ash and glass speeding towards them. A pyrocrastic flow. No, they all fixed their gazes at the tip of the volcano, unable to pull away as their rage subsided, replaced with something else. Someone else.

“...Yes…You have proven worthy, capable, driven to do what is needed. And now I need you. Your mind…”

“Come to me…Lower your ships.”
