Personal Speeders

Introduction

Racing through the trees of Endor. Soaring through the Coruscant skies and dodging traffic. Total domination of snow banks on Hoth. Some of the best sequences in Star Wars take place planetside with high speed chases and sprawling battlefields. With the many types of speeders and warcraft at your disposal, you may want to have a few of these vehicles for your character's personal use. In this exam you will learn about the types of landcraft we offer in our Possessions systems, and how you can make them your own.

Speeder Categories and Traits

This course covers the five kinds of land speeders available for personal use. However, regardless of the category, each speeder will have a description explaining its capabilities and armaments. The description will tell you if the speeder has cannons, if the tank accommodates multiple passengers, or even if the ship can match a walker in a firefight. Additionally, it will rate the maneuverability, speed, hull strength/armoring, and shields (if present) on the following scale:

System Worst Best
Maneuverability Inferior Poor Average Great Exceptional
Speed Inferior Poor Average Great Exceptional
Hull / Armoring Limited Light Average Heavy Powerful
Shields Light Average Heavy Powerful

The item description will also cover the crew complement, cargo capacity, and anything else you would need to know about your vessel. It is assumed that the ship comes with any crew necessary to operate it.

Airspeeder

Airspeeders are personal repulsorlift vehicles used for planetary air travel. They are not able to maintain functionality outside an atmosphere. Coruscant is famous for its use of skylanes to determine traffic routes for safe speeder travel. While transportation is their main objective use, some are more militaristic in fashion. They can have armaments and other useful tools to be used against an enemy force. Famously, in the Battle of Hoth, The Rebel Alliance used T-47 airspeeders against Imperial walkers. Some airspeeders can even be used for security reasons like the Storm IV Twin-Pod cloud cars of Bespin.

Some examples of airspeeders in our system are the Senate limousine, the Imperial combat speeder, and the Rian-327 airspeeder.

Landspeeder image

Landspeeder

While airspeeders rule the skies planetside, landspeeders are in control of the ground. These vehicles are designed for safe travel at the ground level, usually—but not always—using repulsorlifts similar to those used by airspeeders. Aside from personal transportation, public transportation, or even cargo transportation, some of these craft are developed for high-speed racing. Some even have armaments for protection against hostile forces. Luke Skywalker once had an X-34 landspeeder. The most famous landspeeder in star wars might just be the Jawa sandcrawler.

Some examples of landspeeders in our system are the ST-101 repulsor truck, the A-A4B truckspeeder, and the M-68 landspeeder.

Speeder Bike

Speeder bike image

Built for their high speed and maneuverability, speeder bikes rule the racing rings, and are an adrenaline junkie’s best friend. They are manufactured for both civilian and military purposes, and are a common sight across the galaxy. Able to speed through the dense forests of Endor, or across the sand dunes of Tatooine, a speeder bike can be an essential part of your character's loadout. The famous Aratech 74-Z model was highly praised and utilized during the Clone Wars and even into the Galactic Civil War. General Grievous used a Tsmeu-6 personal wheelbike on Utapau before his destruction.

Some speeder bikes, particularly those used for racing, are called swoop bikes.

Some examples of speeder bikes in our system include the Starhawk speeder bike, the BARC speeder, and the Flare-S swoop.

Tank

Tank image

Large armored frontline vehicles, tanks are a staple for any ground force. With a wide range of heavy artillery, these vehicles would spearhead military strikes, paving the way for Rebel forces or Imperial raids. Some tanks utilized repulsor technology while others used caterpillar treads to move around the battlefield. Regardless, few could stand up against these impressive vehicles without heavy artillery of their own. The droid armies of the Trade Federation made significant use of the AAT-1 hover tank in their fight with the Gungan armies. The clone armies of the Republic fought against Separatist forces with the HAVw A6 Juggernaut.

Some examples of tanks in our system are the Endor Forest Ranger, the AAC-1 speeder tank, and the Imperial Assault Tank.

Tanks tend to be significantly slower than speeders, in part due to their heavy armor and armaments.

Walker

Walker image

Probably the most visually recognizable land vehicle in Star Wars is the walker. These heavily armored cavalry vehicles moved around on metal legs instead of repulsors, wheels, or treads. Devastatingly powerful, the Empire was famous for their usage of these vehicles especially when attacking the Rebel Base located on Hoth. Walkers could have anywhere from two to 12 legs, and very powerful weaponry. Some specifically memorable models were the All Terrain Tactical Enforcer (AT-TE) used by the clone armies and the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT).

Some examples of walkers in our system include the Umbaran mobile heavy cannon and the All Terrain Defense Turret (AT-DT).

Acquiring Speeders

Within this section you will be introduced to the different ways in which you can acquire space vehicles for your character(s). There are shops where ships can be purchased with your hard earned credits.

The Iron Garage

From the Resources menu on the site’s navigation bar, select Item Stores and look for The Iron Garage. The Iron Garage is a repulsorlift vehicle dealer that sells individuals a range of landspeeders, speeders bikes and swoops for high-speed ground-based travel, airspeeders for higher altitude atmospheric travel, as well as tanks and walkers designed for combat. This shop is where you will spend your hard earned credits to purchase your character's vehicles. There are over 95 different types of vehicles to choose from, ranging in prices of 5,000 to over 800,000 credits.

If you’re looking for a particular type of vehicle but haven’t settled on a specific model, you can filter store inventory by Item Category.

Limited Edition Speeders

The Celebration Store opens every year around May for May the 4th. The Regent may also open it at other times throughout the year. This store has a stock of limited edition goods that are available only from the Celebration Store. This includes rare and modified versions of existing speeders. These speeders are generally more expensive, but they are also superior to the stock models. The Regent will alert the DB membership to when and for how long the Celebration store will open.

As with speeders bought from The Iron Garage, these limited edition speeders can be sold back to the stores at their regular retail price. But think carefully on it, because it may be a while before they become available again if you should regret the sale.

Modifying Speeders

You have bought a speeder…now what? Aside from writing your character racing, role playing ground assaults, or displaying your vehicles on your character’s loadouts, what else is there to do? The answer…make this speeder your own! There are a number of ways in which you can now customize your land vehicle to be a one of a kind item in your character's possession! This section will teach you just how to do that, and what tools are at your disposal.

Cosmetic Aspect

Some vehicles come with a Cosmetic Aspect slot. These aspects do not change anything about the speeder's functionality, and they do not alter its capability. They simply represent the physical and outward appearance of your land vehicle. Like with other aspects, any custom one must be approved by the Regent staff before they can be applied. For more details, see the Item Aspect Approval Policy.

There are, of course, pre-written aspects that you can use to describe the way your speeder looks. These cover popular archetypes like battle scarring, chrome plating, or even mint conditioning. You can create a custom aspect for your speeder as well, to give it an even more personal and unique touch.

Vehicle Modification Aspect

Some speeders have a Vehicle Modification Aspect slot. These aspects do alter a speeder's functionality, but at an offsetting expense. Like Cosmetic Aspects, you can create a custom aspect that must be approved by the Regent staff. There are pre-written aspects as well, if you so choose to utilize them, or even gain inspiration from them for an idea of your own design.

Rarity

There are a series of rarity levels that apply to all possession items, which include personal speeders. These levels determine the expense, ability, and modification capability of your speeder. The higher the rarity, the more expensive the land vehicle, the more room you have to modify it with a vast array of options.

These rarity levels are as follows:

Rarity Color
Common White
Uncommon Green
Rare Blue
Epic Purple
Legendary Orange

Frosty’s Chop Shop logo

Aside from determining the initial cost of your speeder, rarity serves as a cap on what kind of modifications the vehicle can use. A speeder cannot equip a modification with a more exclusive rarity than the ship itself. For example, a rare speeder can equip uncommon and rare modifications but cannot equip epic or legendary modifications. There are no common modifications.

Frosty’s Chop Shop

Now that you have selected your ship, taking into account rarity, levels, finances, and personal taste, you are able to purchase your vehicle's various modifications! There is only one place to obtain these items, and that is the specialty store, Frosty’s Chop Shop. Frosty's Chop Shop is a unique one-stop shop that sells a wide range of the hottest upgrades and customizations for all classes of land and air based craft. If you want it, Frosty's has got it, and can help anyone turn their basic craft into a hot-rod of epic proportions.

Frosty’s is where you can purchase new armor capabilities, stronger and more advanced weaponry, and a slew of other add ons. While there is no hard requirement on purchasing these mods for your land vehicles, it is the best way to truly set your speeders apart from the other members of our club.

Frosty’s Chop Shop was named in honor of Frosty Romanae Tarentae. Frosty was well known for his kindness and was a pillar of the DB’s gaming community until his untimely death in 2018.

Modification Categories

There are four general types of modifications that a vehicle can be updated with. Those are Enhancements, Hardpoints, Launchers, and Upgrades.

Enhancement image

Enhancement

Enhancement modifications take the existing qualities of your vehicle and make them better. They sometimes give more functionality, and in some cases further purposes. These upgrades can be anything from adding the smell of wet Wookiee to your ship, what you’d want that no one knows, to a maxed out hyperdrive reactor and droid brain. Within the purview of Enhancements you have Basic Enhancements, and Advanced Enhancements. The difference between these two subcategories is simply the levels and applications of their increased functions.

Some examples of Basic Enhancements are the periscope, caltrops, and the Fabritech Fogger smoke generator.

Some examples of Advanced Enhancements are the ejector seat, airbags, and turbopumps.

Hardpoint image

Hardpoint

Some ships will come with available space to add a Hardpoint modification. Hardpoints are external mounts for fixed weapons, turrets, or munitions not covered by launchers. They are additions to the weapons that your speeder’s stock model comes with. Unlike with Personal Starships, there are no subcategories of Hardpoints. Land vehicles are generally not big enough to utilize a large hardpoint variant.

Some examples of Hardpoints are tear gas, flame throwers, and coilguns.

Launcher

Launcher image

Launchers are modifications to the current missile weapons that your speeders already possess. Missiles are some of the strongest weapons in a vehicles arsenal, and the ability to change what types of armaments you can launch at enemies will keep them on their toes. Missiles, rockets, and torpedos fall under this category.

Some examples of Launcher modifications in our system are concussion grenades, ion missiles, and radiation missiles.

Upgrade

Upgrades improve an existing capability or feature of your vehicle. These mods tend to focus on aspects of your speeder's physical chassis and hardware. From enhanced armor, ram attachments, and even tinted windows, the array of functionality at your disposal can make your ride stand out from everyone else's.

Upgrade image

Similarly to Enhancements, there are two types of Upgrades at your disposal. There are Mechanical Upgrades which focus on the body and practical applications of your vehicle, and System Upgrades which revolve around the circuitry and software available to your vehicle.

Some examples of Mechanical Upgrades available to you are coolant radiators, gyro-locks, and all-terrain legs.

Some examples of System Upgrades available to you are exodrive systems, Nightshadow coating, and kyber-powered weapons.

Conclusion

Like any other item in your possessions, you will access your purchased speeders and mods by going to Possessions and Loadouts on your Admin page. While speeders will be slotted into your loadouts, mods will be slotted into your speeders. The possibilities are endless in what assortment of speeders and mods you choose to possess for your various characters. Take what you have learned here and enjoy it. Happy driving!
