Dogfighting Basics
Intro
“Tally-Ho! Multiple fast movers, twelve o’clock low,” the lead called calmly as his TIE Advanced X1 rolled onto a new vector. Emerald sensor glyphs bloomed across the cockpit display, resolving into the unmistakable silhouettes of incoming X-wings cutting hard from Hutt space. His two wingmen slid into a VIC formation without hesitation, tightening their formation to less than a meter apart. They shunted power to engines, the familiar whine of twin ion drives rising in pitch. Red target brackets flickered alive, range closing fast. “Stay tight,” the lead ordered, voice steady and precise. “Break and engage on my mark.”
The three TIE’s rolled as one, an iron-tight formation pivoting through the void like a single predatory shape. The flight leader held the apex, steady and deliberate, while his wingmen mirrored the motion on either side. They maintained equal spacing as their solar panels knifed through the void. The three TIE’s pitched down together, converting altitude into speed, their formation angling to slide above and behind the X-wings’ approach vector. Target solutions snapped green as the lead saw the moment open and barked across the channel, sharp and immediate: “BREAK! BREAK! BREAK!”
Space combat isn’t won by who pulls the trigger first, it’s decided in the heartbeat before, when a pilot commits to an angle, shifts power and trusts their ship to be exactly where they should be. In the cold vacuum between stars, dogfighting is a lethal dance of momentum, formation and split-second decisions, where discipline keeps you alive and panic gets you killed. This lesson strips starship combat down to its bones, guiding you through the fundamentals of formations, maneuvers and power management.
Why do you ask? So your battles feel sharp, cinematic and more importantly…believable. By the end, you won’t just be writing ships trading fire, you’ll be writing pilots thinking, reacting and surviving in the chaos of the void.
Starfighter Sub-Classes
‘Starfighters’ is a general classification that tends to refer to small, maneuverable craft designed for combat in the atmosphere, or in space. What else a starfighter does — dogfighting, bombing runs, ground support — is better categorized by its sub-class. Many starfighters will fall under three main sub-classes: bombers, interceptors, and gunships, serving at least one of three basic additional functions. Starfighters often have some degree of overlap with other sub-classes, as well as a few distinct, more specialized sub-classes. While a starship’s manufacturer determines a ship’s classifications, it’s worthwhile to note that not all starfighters have a sub-class, and classifications have been known to change over time, whether through retrofits, militarization, or repurposing.
Bombers
When you have a target that just needs a full on scrunching, a bomber is often going to be a commander's best bet. The term Bomber is a generic catch-all term that describes a small craft that is capable of employing a wider, or more potent range of munitions, typically focussing on strike missions. They are often employed against larger and more hardened targets, as where more lightly armed targets can be hit by other types of small craft with nearly equal effectiveness.
From the venerable Y-wing, through the ubiquitous TIE Bomber, up to the B-Wings and SF-17 heavy bombers, most factions with any plans for any offensive military operations on a large scale will maintain some form of bomber force in their fleets. Bombers are less common in smaller, local, or simple planetary defense forces due to their cost. Both in terms of the spaceframes themselves and the munitions they are armed with, they are less versatile than most other types of snubfighters.
Interceptors(True Fighters)
When most people hear the term interceptor, fighter, or the more general terms, star or snub fighter, a vessel of this type is what comes to most people's minds. These are fast, maneuverable, decently armed spacecraft that are extremely versatile. They are capable of a wide range of mission sets ranging from, scouting and patrol, through to escort, strike, space superiority and ground support missions. A-Wings, X-wings,TIE Fighters/Interceptors/Defenders, Naboo N-1 and the V-19 are all members of this class of vessel.
These vessels can be found in nearly every corner of the galaxy, serving as mainstays in large hegemons, pirates, sovereign republic and small defense forces alike. Their versatility, and outsized potential impact make them an efficient means of both offensive and defensive operations. The sheer magnitude and variety of different ‘fighter’ types makes this class of vessel one of the easiest to visually identify.
Interceptors(Trainers)
Though not usually classed as fightercraft, armed flight trainers are often used by paramilitaries and local defense forces, among others, in the role of ‘Light Fighters’ or ‘Customs and Border Patrol Auxiliaries’. Most trainers operating in this role, will not be considered capable of sustained frontline combat, but are often an adequate and cost effective deterrent and useful support fighter.
Interceptors (Atmospheric Fighters/Air Speeders)
Another sub type of fighters are the comparatively rare, purpose built Atmospheric Fighters, and planetary gravity well bound Combat Air Speeders. These vessels can be effective against foes of a similar type and in strictly defensive roles, but will often be outmatched by true interceptors, or more heavily armed small ships. They are usually seen in local defense forces and as auxiliary craft for small outposts and colonies.
Gunships
Ever looked at a Snubfighter and thought, “Just imagine what we could do if this was a bit bigger and had more guns and armour?”. Well, it turns out several starship manufacturers and designers did. Though there isn't nearly the variety of different makes and models of gunships as there are in the interceptor type, this family of ships has a wide and disparate spectrum of different vessels in terms of size, armament, speed, maneuverability, capacity and capabilities. LAATs, U-Wings, Firesprays, Lancer class Pursuit craft, and the ST-70 (the Razor Crest being one example) are all members of this type.
Transports
Smaller transports and shuttles will often be engaged in combat either with or alongside various other types of starfighters, so it is fitting to include a mention about them here. For the purposes of space combat fighters, gunships, or other types will often be assigned to either attack, or escort, various different types of transports and shuttles. With this fact in mind, the most common types of weapons systems on ships of this type that are to be considered combat capable are auto-targeted later cannons, and fully traversing turret type weapons. Fixed or forward firing weapons are often overly restrictive due to this vessel type's slower speed and underwhelming maneuverability in many cases.
Light Freighters
Light freighters, especially well armed ones are often used as heavy fighters or pseudo gunships and even bombers. Many of the more modular types of light freighters can relatively easily be retrofitted into dedicated combat craft. Light freighters have the largest overall variation in size and capabilities when compared to all the other craft listed in the above sections. The YT-1300, YT-2400, ZH-40 are prime examples of this type, as is the Ghost, a VCX-100 class vessel owned by Hera Syndulla.
Dogfighting
What is dogfighting? Starfighter dogfighting is defined as the close-range combat between opposing starfighters. Where pilots maneuver aggressively to gain a positional advantage and secure a firing solution. It emphasizes rapid decision-making, precise control, and constant management of speed, angles, and distance.
Dogfighting is important because it determines survival once opposing craft are within visual range, where reflexes and tactics matter more than raw firepower. Mastery of dogfighting allows a pilot to outmaneuver threats, protect allies, and decisively influence the outcome of an engagement.
Maneuverability is Key
Maneuverability is the single most important factor in surviving a starfighter dogfight, because it determines who controls the engagement and who is forced to react. A pilot who can turn tighter, change direction faster, or transition smoothly between vertical and horizontal movement can deny an enemy a clean shot while creating opportunities of their own. One key factor to remember, there is no atmosphere and there is no ground. You’re fighting in a vacuum that is almost free of anything that can be described as terrain. In an environment like this, everything will be able to turn on a dime. There is no air resistance and no one will be banking slowly. It will be difficult to predict an enemy’s movements simply because they will be able to change them in a blink of an eye. If you’re caught in a turning battle with another fighter, you’re trying to stay on their six as they are trying to stay on yours. Suddenly you may need to disengage, low fuel, low ammo etc., your safest outlet is to put distance between you and your enemy. Merely breaking off can end the fight in seconds, a pilot with just a miniscule of skill can take you out. A rule of thumb to remember, turn into every attack, never run, run and you’re dead.
Dogfights are rarely decided by straight-line speed alone. They are won by the pilot who can manage energy, angles, and timing through precise maneuvering. Each roll, climb, or break turn buys you time. Disrupts an opponent’s aim and it can reshape the geometry of the fight. In close combat, superior maneuverability keeps a pilot unpredictable, difficult to track and ultimately alive long enough to seize the advantage.
One key technique of maneuverability is jinking. Which is making small, rapid and unpredictable changes to a starfighter’s flight path, disrupting an enemy’s aim. Instead of flying straight and steady, a jinking pilot constantly forces opponents to readjust their lead and timing, making accurate shots far more difficult. This simple but effective technique greatly reduces the risk of being hit by blaster fire or missiles, especially in close-range fights. By staying hard to track, jinking buys a pilot valuable seconds to reposition, evade incoming fire or set up a counterattack.
Combat Maneuvers
Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM) form the foundation of all starfighter combat. These maneuvers are the aerodynamic and geometric movements pilots use to gain positional advantage over an opponent. The end goal is to maneuver into the enemy’s six o’clock position, roughly 150 to 300 meters (400 - 1000 feet) behind the target, where a clean firing solution can be achieved. At their core, BFM is about managing energy, angles and distance. Every turn, climb, dive or roll is a deliberate choice meant to control closure rate, deny an opponent a shot or create one of your own. Some maneuvers are designed to press an attack and finish the fight. While others exist purely to survive long enough to reset the engagement.
For this lesson, we divide BFM into two clear categories: Offensive Maneuvers and Defensive Maneuvers.
Offensive Maneuvers
High Yo-Yo

The High Yo-Yo is used when an attacker is closing too quickly and risks overshooting their target. The pilot climbs above the defender’s plane of turn, trading speed for altitude. Once closure is under control, the attacker dives back down, ideally rolling in behind the target with a firing solution.
Low Yo-Yo

The Low Yo-Yo is the inverse of the High Yo-Yo. It is used to increase your closure rate. The attacker dips below the defender’s turn, gaining speed while “cutting the corner.” The pilot then climbs back up into the defender’s flight path to tighten angles and regain offensive pressure.
Lag Pursuit Roll

This maneuver involves rolling toward the outside of the defender’s turn while maintaining visual contact. The purpose is to reduce your closure rate and prevent an overshoot without breaking the pursuit. It is a controlled, patient move that keeps the attacker in the fight while preserving their options.
Immelmann Turn

The Immelmann is a vertical maneuver consisting of a half-loop followed by a half-roll at the top. It reverses direction while converting airspeed into altitude. Pilots use this maneuver to reposition, disengage upward or set up an angle of attack from above.
Defensive Maneuvers
Break Turn

The break turn is considered one of the most fundamental defensive maneuvers. The defender performs a sudden, aggressive vector shift turn toward the attacker. This maneuver will rapidly increase the angle off tail. More importantly, this forces the attacker to overshoot or abandon the firing solution.
Split-S

The Split-S is a fast disengagement maneuver. The pilot rolls inverted and pulls through a descending half-loop, reversing direction while rapidly losing altitude. It is commonly used to escape pressure, reposition or drag an opponent into unfavorable angle of attack.
Scissors (Flat and Rolling)

Scissors involve a series of sharp turn reversals intended to force the attacker out in front.
Flat scissors occur primarily in the horizontal starship and focus on timing and turn rate.

Rolling scissors extend the fight into the vertical, with both pilots trading altitude and energy in tight looping climbs and dives.
High-G Barrel Roll

This is a last-ditch defensive maneuver used when an attacker is seconds from firing. The defender executes a tight helical roll that disrupts the attacker’s aim. The maneuver forces excessive closure, often causing the attacker to fly past and lose the advantage.

Using your auxiliary systems correctly
The auxiliary systems play a critical role in dogfighting because they give a pilot options beyond basic flight and weapons control. Power management, engine boosting systems, shields, sensors and countermeasures can be the difference between escaping a bad position. They can also assist in capitalizing on a fleeting opening. When used at the right moment, these systems can boost maneuverability and break missile locks. They can briefly enhance firepower when it matters most. Pilots who actively manage their auxiliary systems fight smarter, adapt faster and survive longer. Versus those who rely on flying and shooting alone.
Targeting Computers
Starfighters rely heavily on targeting computers to assist pilots in tracking enemies and calculating firing solutions. Having said that, these systems are tools not replacements for skill. When used correctly targeting computers can greatly enhance a pilot’s effectiveness and lethality. But be mindful, overreliance on them can become a serious liability.
Advantages
Targeting computers can process vast amounts of data quick-like and in a hurry. So much faster than any pilot could manage alone. They can track and calculate firing solutions for fast-moving targets. They rapidly process angles of attack (AoA) and help pilots acquire missile locks in seconds. This allows pilots to focus more on maneuvering and maintaining situational awareness. When engaging at medium to long-range, these systems increase accuracy and reduce reaction time when calculating firing solution(s).
Disadvantages
In dogfighting, targeting computers can hinder more than help. Rapid maneuvering, jinking, electronic countermeasures or sensor clutter can cause targeting solutions to lag or become unreliable. Pilots who fixate solely on computer cues, risk losing visual contact and situational awareness. This mitigates instinctive timing. Skills that are often the deciding factor when fights devolve into tight, high-speed turning engagements.

Squadrons
Starfighter operations are built around elements, flights and squadrons. Allowing pilots to fight as organized, disciplined units rather than as individuals. An element is the small sub unit, composed of two fighters. A flight is the basic combat element, typically consisting of four starfighters working in close coordination. A squadron is usually made up of three flights, totaling twelve starfighters. This structure ensures flexibility at the tactical level while maintaining enough strength and cohesion to conduct and sustain combat operations.
In Formation!
Starfighter formations are built around three core principles: mutual support, clear visibility, and efficient energy management. Flying in formation allows pilots to cover each other’s blind spots and maintain situational awareness. This allows them to respond as a coordinated unit rather than as isolated fighters. The most commonly used combat formations are Combat Spread, Line Abreast, Wedge (VIC), and Echelon. Each suited for different tactical situations.
Combat/Battle Spread
In a combat spread, starfighters generally fly side-by-side. Maintaining a wider separation than a standard line abreast formation. One starfighter is often positioned slightly higher than the others. This is to improve sensor coverage and visual scanning. This spacing increases survivability by reducing vulnerability to area attacks while still allowing wingmen to provide mutual support.
Line Abreast
Line abreast places starfighters side-by-side. Typically spaced about 500 meters apart, all facing the same direction. This formation maximizes forward visibility and firepower. Making it useful for patrols, wide-area searches and initial contact with enemy forces.
Wedge (VIC)
The wedge, also known as the VIC formation. Is a leader-focused triangular formation. The flight lead sits at the point with their wingmen trailing slightly behind on either side. This formation provides strong forward firepower, excellent visibility and tight command and control. Making the wedge a flexible choice for both offensive and defensive positioning.
Echelon
In this formation, wingmen fly diagonally behind and to one side of the flight/squadron leader. Forming a staggered step-like flight pattern. Which offers a clear line of sight visual contact with the lead.
Understanding and properly utilizing formations is essential to successful combat missions. Each formation offers different advantages in visibility, firepower and mutual support. The ability to transition between formations is what keeps a flight/squadron flexible when the fight shifts. Master formations, and you turn a handful of pilots into a single, coordinated weapon.
Know Your Wing-Mate
Knowing your wingman is just as important as knowing your starfighter or your enemy for that matter. Trust and coordination are what keep pilots alive. A wingman who understands your flying style, habits and limits can anticipate your moves. Cover your blind spots and react without hesitation when things go south. That trust is built through familiarity and repetition. This allows both pilots to fight as a single, coordinated element rather than two separate pilots. When wingmen truly know each other, communication becomes quicker, decisions become sharper and survival odds increase exponentially.
Closing
At the end of the mission, starfighter combat isn’t about who has the quickest trigger pull or the fastest ship. It’s about who controls the geometry and the chaos of the fight. Maneuverability, energy management, and timing are what decide who gets the clean shot and who becomes a hashmark on the side of someone’s fuselage. Whether you’re writing a tight turning engagement full of jinking and break-neck turns or an intense pursuit using yo-yo maneuvers to manage your closure rate. The goal is always the same: deny the enemy their firing solution while building your own.
One truth will remain, no pilot should ever dogfight alone. Formations and wingmen exist for a reason. Mutual support, visibility and coordinated pressure turn individual pilots into a unit that can survive the chaos of dogfighting and simultaneously exploit openings. The same can be said for systems management: power shunting, sensors, shields and countermeasures. They aren’t just “extra buttons,” to “tommy-toggle.” They are the tools that separate a pilot from one who reacts, to one who dictates the fight. Even targeting computers should be treated as an aid, not a crutch. Because when the moment things devolve into close-range chaos, instinct, skill and discipline matter more than the green bracket across your HUD. Maintaining a cool under pressure mindset is crucial. Trust your instincts. As that chaos will find you, it’s not a question of if, it’s just a matter of when.
So when you do write your next dogfight, avoid just describing ships trading fire. Layout what the pilot's choices are, the reasoning behind every roll, break, climb and burst of speed. Show the tension of a wingman calling threats, the split-second commitment to acquire the attack angle. Finally, the brutal consequence of being out of position for even a heartbeat. What goes through your pilot’s thoughts as the trigger is pulled. Conversely, this is also marked by the target’s realization that their end is imminent. That’s where believable starfighter combat lives. It relishes in the control, the coordination and the razor-thin margin between survival and becoming that hash mark.
