This course will teach you about various types of combat vehicles used in ground conflicts across the galaxy, including the relative strengths and weaknesses of each vehicle type, and examples of vehicles which may fill certain roles on the battlefield. Although many civilian vehicle models were adapted to serve in combat (especially by the Alliance to Restore the Republic), only purpose-built combat vehicles will be included in this course.

Combat Vehicles

As with personal equipment, knowing when and how to use weapon systems is critical. The same is true for vehicle combat, if not even moreso. Vehicles run the gamut from speeder bikes, completely unarmored with a single laser that’s barely more powerful than a handheld blaster, to massive walkers and armored vehicles capable of deploying dozens of infantry and bristling with missiles and laser cannons.

Many of these vehicles are designed and built to work with other models, covering their downsides. An easy example is the Empire’s All Terrain walker line: It consists of multiple models that complement each other. The Battle of Hoth showcases the advantages of the All Terrain line, with AT-ATs moving steadily on the Rebel lines supported by AT-STs. The amount of models available in the All Terrain line means that there’s a suitable vehicle for almost every situation. Even more vehicles attempt and fail to do everything well. This course introduces several more common (and a few less common) vehicles, but it is by no means exhaustive, given the many vehicles employed.

Many of these ground vehicles are used by militaries, and by the clans specifically in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. However, members who have the skill and experience piloting these vehicles may purchase many of these combat vehicles from item stores like The Iron Garage. A member who wishes to operate one of these combat vehicles should train in the piloting skill or the operations skill to ensure they are able to effectively use the vehicle in combat. Unit leaders may purchase formations of vehicles for use in their respective units’ militaries from the Arx Armor Workshop.

Vehicle Types

Scout Vehicles

Scout vehicles are intended to provide commanders with information about the enemy’s movements. Scouts often operate semi-independently of their parent unit, and often well ahead of allied forces. Most scouts are fast and lightly armoured in order to cover larger areas and flee engagements with hostile forces, though rumors persist of certain Core World militaries using heavy walkers in a scouting role.

Scout vehicles are generally not designed to engage the enemy more than is required to disengage and report back, although some scout designers have embraced the concept of reconnaissance-in-force.

Artillery

Self-propelled artillery (artillery mounted on a vehicle chassis) is designed to engage the enemy from a distance, using powerful weapons to inflict damage across a large area in support of friendly forces. Indirect-fire weapons such as missiles and projectile cannons are more common in artillery than other vehicles. However, most artillery vehicles have limited mobility and light armor, leaving them vulnerable to enemy attacks.

Artillery are normally employed en-masse, in lines far enough behind the line of battle that the artillery are protected from direct attack by the enemy, although many lighter pieces are designed to engage the enemy more directly.

Artillery Models

Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery (SPHA)

Pic9

  • Manufacturer: Rothana Heavy Engineering

    • Self-propelled artillery
  • Length: 140.2 meters
  • Speed: 35 km/h
  • Crew: 30
  • Weapons:
    • 1 modular weapons mount

The Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery was a multipurpose heavy vehicle designed by Rothana Heavy Engineering, the designers of the highly successful AT-TE. Created to serve as a modular artillery piece, it could be deployed on the battlefield only by spacefaring vessels due to the sheer size of the walker. Its primary armament was the well-used and very prominent turbolaser (SPHA-T), which saw use at the Battle of Geonosis to destroy the command modules of a number of Lucrehulk-class vessels. However, with a modular mount, it could be used to equip other weapons such as ion cannons and concussion missile launchers. To counter this, the walker's design necessitated heavy frontal armour and multiple legs in order to stabilise the bulk of the vehicle, making it slow and cumbersome, as well as needing to reposition itself in order to change firing angle. However, the sheer power of its equipped weapons made it a fearsome artillery piece throughout the Clone Wars, even being used aboard Venator-class starships as anti-capital ship weaponry.

Like most First Order equipment, the M6 is much larger and more capable than the Imperial equipment that inspired it. The AT-M6 is half again as large as an AT-AT, but carries far fewer troopers due to the space requirements of the massive turbolaser cannon. The weapon system allows the AT-M6 to deliver fire support to the squad of stormtroopers it carries once they disembark and even threaten hostile capital ships.

A modular repulsorlift vehicle used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Freerunner featured an open-air design for both the cockpit and the gun platform. The gun platform could be configured as the mission required, although the default configuration featured a dual medium laser cannon for anti-vehicle purposes and a pair of blaster cannon to defend against hostile infantry. The Freerunner is very lightly armored, but is equipped with a deflector shield generator as its principle defense against hostile fire. The Freerunner can also carry and deploy 6-8 troops, depending on the weapons mix it carries.

Tanks

Tanks are among the most heavily-armed and -armoured ground vehicles, and are designed to both inflict damage on and withstand damage from hostile forces. They use their superior speed to flank and encircle the enemy, then close in to engage.

It is greatly armed with two medium dual elevating laser cannons and a forward mounted medium dual laser turret. It requires a commander, a pilot, and a gunner to operate at full efficiency inside the tank protected by sealed hatches.

Transports

Transports are used to deliver infantry to the battlefield. They varied widely in size, from small armored personnel carriers to enormous AT-AT walkers. Larger models of transport are often heavily-armored and generously armed to ensure their passengers reach the front lines, while smaller models of transport may rely on speed and maneuverability to avoid enemy attacks. Transports are usually equipped with weapons for self-defence, but may possess heavier armaments to allow them to support troops who have already disembarked. Heavy transports usually rely on wheels or legs instead of repulsorlifts, which increase stability at the cost of speed.

Most transports also function as infantry fighting vehicles, staying on the field and using their weaponry and often their armor to support the infantry they deploy.

It has heavy armoring, but must slow down to negotiate turns with limited maneuverability making it most effective in open flat terrain. They were rapidly replaced by the Imperial Army in favor of sleeker and more versatile combat vehicles and deployed only where their strengths could be utilized such as Hoth.

Multi-Troop Transport (MTT)

  • Manufacturer: Baktoid Armor Workshop
  • Roles:
    • Troop transport (droids)
  • Length: 35.94 meters

    • Sheer Freaking Size

The Multi-Troop Transport was a heavily armored repulsorlift transport vehicle used by both the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems to transport their B1 battle droids before and during the Clone Wars. During the Clone Wars, it was also used to transport B2 super battle droids. This vehicle was originally designed by Baktoid Armor Workshop as a modified cargo pod. Its reactor and main engines were in the rear, in classic Baktoid style. The MTT could carry 112 armed battle droids in a hydraulically powered deployment rack. This rack extended out from the frontal hatch, allowing the cargo to be deployed directly into combat if needed. The rack was also detachable.

The MTT's front was reinforced and studded with case-hardened metal alloy studs and was designed to smash through obstacles to reach its destination. With heavy armor and weaponry, the strongest Baktoid had ever made, this made the MTT almost unstoppable.

The MTT's control room was staffed by an OOM pilot battle droid and a droid gunner/engineer. It was armed with only a quartet of 17kv anti-personnel blaster cannons mounted in two ball turrets. After the Battle of Naboo, it became clear that the MTTs deployed too slowly. Further models employed during the Clone Wars, including the ones used during the Battle of Muunilinst, deployed soldiers in standing and battle-ready position, four units at a time, allowing for immediate deployment of droids efficiently and reducing vulnerability. Some were also repainted in Separatist colors and retrofitted with new racks that could carry 12 super battle droids.
