This course will teach you about various types of combat vehicles used in ground conflicts across the galaxy, including the relative strengths and weaknesses of each vehicle type, and examples of vehicles which may fill certain roles on the battlefield. Although many civilian vehicle models were adapted to serve in combat (especially by the Alliance to Restore the Republic), only purpose-built combat vehicles will be included in this course.
As with personal equipment, knowing when and how to use weapon systems is critical. The same is true for vehicle combat, if not even moreso. Vehicles run the gamut from speeder bikes, completely unarmored with a single laser that’s barely more powerful than a handheld blaster, to massive walkers and armored vehicles capable of deploying dozens of infantry and bristling with missiles and laser cannons.
Many of these vehicles are designed and built to work with other models, covering their downsides. An easy example is the Empire’s All Terrain walker line: It consists of multiple models that complement each other. The Battle of Hoth showcases the advantages of the All Terrain line, with AT-ATs moving steadily on the Rebel lines supported by AT-STs. The amount of models available in the All Terrain line means that there’s a suitable vehicle for almost every situation. Even more vehicles attempt and fail to do everything well. This course introduces several more common (and a few less common) vehicles, but it is by no means exhaustive, given the many vehicles employed.
Many of these ground vehicles are used by militaries, and by the clans specifically in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. However, members who have the skill and experience piloting these vehicles may purchase many of these combat vehicles from item stores like The Iron Garage. A member who wishes to operate one of these combat vehicles should train in the piloting skill or the operations skill to ensure they are able to effectively use the vehicle in combat. Unit leaders may purchase formations of vehicles for use in their respective units’ militaries from the Arx Armor Workshop.
Scout vehicles are intended to provide commanders with information about the enemy’s movements. Scouts often operate semi-independently of their parent unit, and often well ahead of allied forces. Most scouts are fast and lightly armoured in order to cover larger areas and flee engagements with hostile forces, though rumors persist of certain Core World militaries using heavy walkers in a scouting role.
Scout vehicles are generally not designed to engage the enemy more than is required to disengage and report back, although some scout designers have embraced the concept of reconnaissance-in-force.
The All Terrain - Defense Pod (AT-DP) is a Walker with two legs, designed as an anti-infantry and anti-light vehicle weapon. Its armor is sufficient to protect against light blaster fire, but it cannot hold out against more powerful munitions. It requires a crew of a pilot and a gunner to operate at full efficiency. It is armed with one heavy laser cannon. Developed for the Galactic Empire, the AT-DP was often used to train Imperial cadets.
The light construction of the All Terrain-Recon Transport makes it vulnerable against heavy weapons. Normally seen in scouting packs or used for police support, they saw some use in the Imperial Army. Some modified AT-RT's were also used by the Rebels, who painted them with camouflage to blend into the surroundings, and often replaced the massive repeating laser cannon with a floodlight.
The 74-Z Speeder Bike is a Speeder Bike designed for combat and reconnaissance, the 74-Z has the unusual ability to use a powerful boost that propels the speeder over vast distances in a short time. It requires a crew of 1 to operate. It is armed with one blaster cannon. The 74-Z was used by Imperial scout troopers, including on Endor.
The 614-AvA Speeder Bike is a Speeder Bike designed for personal transport and security patrol duty. It requires a crew of 1 to operate. It is armed with two blaster cannons. Imperial stormtroopers on Lothal used the 614-AvA for scouting and patrol.
Self-propelled artillery (artillery mounted on a vehicle chassis) is designed to engage the enemy from a distance, using powerful weapons to inflict damage across a large area in support of friendly forces. Indirect-fire weapons such as missiles and projectile cannons are more common in artillery than other vehicles. However, most artillery vehicles have limited mobility and light armor, leaving them vulnerable to enemy attacks.
Artillery are normally employed en-masse, in lines far enough behind the line of battle that the artillery are protected from direct attack by the enemy, although many lighter pieces are designed to engage the enemy more directly.
The Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery was a multipurpose heavy vehicle designed by Rothana Heavy Engineering, the designers of the highly successful AT-TE. Created to serve as a modular artillery piece, it could be deployed on the battlefield only by spacefaring vessels due to the sheer size of the walker. Its primary armament was the well-used and very prominent turbolaser (SPHA-T), which saw use at the Battle of Geonosis to destroy the command modules of a number of Lucrehulk-class vessels. However, with a modular mount, it could be used to equip other weapons such as ion cannons and concussion missile launchers. To counter this, the walker's design necessitated heavy frontal armour and multiple legs in order to stabilise the bulk of the vehicle, making it slow and cumbersome, as well as needing to reposition itself in order to change firing angle. However, the sheer power of its equipped weapons made it a fearsome artillery piece throughout the Clone Wars, even being used aboard Venator-class starships as anti-capital ship weaponry.
The All Terrain - Attack Pod is a Walker with three legs. The AT-AP primarily serves as a scout or mobile artillery platform. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 2 gunners to operate at full efficiency. It is armed with one heavy projectile launcher, one heavy blaster cannon, and one medium laser cannon. First deployed by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars.
The All Terrain MegaCaliber Six, or AT-M6, is the First Order’s answer to the scarcity of AT-ATs after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Like most First Order equipment, the M6 is much larger and more capable than the Imperial equipment that inspired it. The AT-M6 is half again as large as an AT-AT, but carries far fewer troopers due to the space requirements of the massive turbolaser cannon. The weapon system allows the AT-M6 to deliver fire support to the squad of stormtroopers it carries once they disembark and even threaten hostile capital ships.
The Umbaran Mobile Heavy Cannon is a Walker with six legs, designed to provide mobile heavy artillery support. The Umbaran is very heavily armored and lacks speed. It requires a crew of 1 to operate. It is armed with one articulated electromagnetic plasma cannon, and two anti-infantry lasers. Deployed by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clones Wars, the Umbaran is no longer common on modern battlefields but still packs quite a punch.
Light armoured vehicles fight alongside allied infantry, supporting each other while engaging the enemy at close range, rather than operating independently. They may carry much heavier weaponry than infantry units, but their light armor and weaponry make them more vulnerable than tanks or combat transports.
The Ultra-Light Assault Vehicle is a Landspeeder designed as infantry support. It is highly maneuverable, and it carries relatively heavy armor and shielding for such a small craft. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 1 gunner to operate at full efficiency. It is armed with twin laser cannons and one rear-mounted turret. The ULAV was used by the Rebellion to support slow-moving rebel troops on the battlefield.
The All Terrain - Scout Transport is a Walker with two legs, designed for reconnaissance, anti-infantry combat, and troop support. The AT-ST is highly modular, with weapons systems that can be swapped out based on mission requirements. The AT-ST tends to handle best on even ground, becoming somewhat unsteady in rough terrain. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 1 gunner to operate at full efficiency. It is armed with one twin blaster cannon, one light twin blaster cannon, one grenade launcher. Deployed in large numbers by the Galactic Empire, including during the Battle of Endor.
A modular repulsorlift vehicle used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Freerunner featured an open-air design for both the cockpit and the gun platform. The gun platform could be configured as the mission required, although the default configuration featured a dual medium laser cannon for anti-vehicle purposes and a pair of blaster cannon to defend against hostile infantry. The Freerunner is very lightly armored, but is equipped with a deflector shield generator as its principle defense against hostile fire. The Freerunner can also carry and deploy 6-8 troops, depending on the weapons mix it carries.
Tanks are among the most heavily-armed and -armoured ground vehicles, and are designed to both inflict damage on and withstand damage from hostile forces. They use their superior speed to flank and encircle the enemy, then close in to engage.
The AAT-1 Hover Tank is a tank designed to assault heavily fortified defenses. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 1 gunner to operate at full efficiency. It is armed with one heavy laser cannon, two anti-personnel laser cannons and six energy shell projectile launchers. It is heavily armored but slow, making it vulnerable to anti-armor weapons on the battlefield. It saw extensive use by the Galactic Empire following the battle of Yavin.
The 2-M Hover Tank is a Tank designed for heavy ground combat, the 2-M Hover Tank is a repulsorlift tank that excels at infantry support and was heavily used by the Galactic Empire. It does not fare well in forests or in rocky environments due to its large size. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 1 gunner. It is armed with one medium laser cannon turret, one anti-infantry turret laser cannon, and two missile launchers.
The T2-B Repulsor Tank is a tank designed for reconnaissance, the T2-B can travel over land or water and has deflector shields strong enough to withstand sustained small arms fire. It is an excellent anti-infantry vehicle when used in combat, but lacks staying power against other tanks or walkers. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 2 gunners to operate at full efficiency. It is armed with quad light blaster cannons. Used by the Rebellion primarily for advanced scouting.
The TX-225 GAVw Combat Assault Tank, known more simply as the Imperial combat assault tank, is a tank designed for ground assault for the Galactic Empire. It is a heavily armored ground effect tracked vehicle that moves along the ground using powerful engines giving it great maneuverability in tight quarters such as urban environments and ability to transport heavy payloads. It is greatly armed with two medium dual elevating laser cannons and a forward mounted medium dual laser turret. It requires a commander, a pilot, and a gunner to operate at full efficiency inside the tank protected by sealed hatches.
Transports are used to deliver infantry to the battlefield. They varied widely in size, from small armored personnel carriers to enormous AT-AT walkers. Larger models of transport are often heavily-armored and generously armed to ensure their passengers reach the front lines, while smaller models of transport may rely on speed and maneuverability to avoid enemy attacks. Transports are usually equipped with weapons for self-defence, but may possess heavier armaments to allow them to support troops who have already disembarked.
Most transports also function as infantry fighting vehicles, staying on the field and using their weaponry and often their armor to support the infantry they deploy.
The All Terrain - Armored Transport is a Walker with four legs, designed to transport soldiers as slowly as possible and to inflict maximum damage to the enemy while doing it. The AT-AT is extremely heavily armored, though it is vulnerable to being tripped-up. It requires a crew of 1 pilot and 1 gunner to operate at full efficiency and can carry up to 40 passengers. It is armed with two chin-mounted heavy laser cannons and two temple-mounted medium blasters. Used by the Galactic Empire to assault the Rebel base on Hoth.
The HAVw A6 Juggernaut is a heavily armed and armored ten-wheeled Tank designed as a military transport. At nearly 50 meters in length, and 30 meters tall, it has a large amount of interior space for up to 300 lightly armed and armoured soldiers but as few as 50 depending on the configuration and kit, as well as a full crew of 12 pilots and 8 gunners is required to operate the vehicle at full efficiency. It is armed with a heavy laser turret near the rear of the vehicle, a rapid repeating laser cannon and two rocket launchers atop the mid-section along with two medium laser cannons on either side of the vehicle, as well as two dual laser cannons mounted to the front. It has heavy armoring, but can move at only incredibly slow speeds with slow acceleration and must slow even further to negotiate turns with limited maneuverability making it most effective in open flat terrain. They were rapidly replaced by the Imperial Army in favor of sleeker and more versatile combat vehicles and deployed only where their strengths could be utilized such as Hoth.
The Multi-Troop Transport was a heavily armored repulsorlift transport vehicle used by both the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems to transport their B1 battle droids before and during the Clone Wars. During the Clone Wars, it was also used to transport B2 super battle droids. This vehicle was originally designed by Baktoid Armor Workshop as a modified cargo pod. Its reactor and main engines were in the rear, in classic Baktoid style. The MTT could carry 112 armed battle droids in a hydraulically powered deployment rack. This rack extended out from the frontal hatch, allowing the cargo to be deployed directly into combat if needed. The rack was also detachable.
The MTT's front was reinforced and studded with case-hardened metal alloy studs and was designed to smash through obstacles to reach its destination. With heavy armor and weaponry, the strongest Baktoid had ever made, this made the MTT almost unstoppable.
The MTT's control room was staffed by an OOM pilot battle droid and a droid gunner/engineer. It was armed with only a quartet of 17kv anti-personnel blaster cannons mounted in two ball turrets. After the Battle of Naboo, it became clear that the MTTs deployed too slowly. Further models employed during the Clone Wars, including the ones used during the Battle of Muunilinst, deployed soldiers in standing and battle-ready position, four units at a time, allowing for immediate deployment of droids efficiently and reducing vulnerability. Some were also repainted in Separatist colors and retrofitted with new racks that could carry 12 super battle droids.
The All Terrain - Tactical Enforcer, or AT-TE, is a Walker with six articulated legs, designed as a multipurpose military ground tank for the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. It has two heavily armored sections connected by a flexible concertina section to increase its mobility and allow it to operate in the vacuum of space. Its short low-built legs gave it great stability but slow speeds, but allowed it to operate in all terrains and climb sheer surfaces. It is armed with a powerful mass-driver cannon on its dorsal surface, with four laser cannon turrets on the front and two in the rear. It requires one pilot who sits protected in a forward compartment, while the gunner sits exposed atop the vehicle to operate the mass-driver cannon and can carry up to 20 passengers.
