Kalsunor Massassi Arena

Elevated over a ravine, the Massassi Arena has withstood the tests of time. It is arranged in a circular formation and made by a slab of stone that connects the opposite slopes of the ravine. On its eastern side, the floating arena leads to a staircase and into a near-vertical cliff face. Because of its nearly unsupported vantage that overlooks a several hundred-meter fall, even the smallest creatures can feel the occasional motion the platform makes as the breeze brushes across its cold surface.

Adding to the adrenaline rush of standing within the slab’s concentric patterns carved into the rock, barriers and obstacles echo the Massassi’s commitment to taking every advantage over their opponents. Pillars ring the outer edge without guardrails linking them, some remaining intact and others having toppled into the arena or over the perilous heights to the ground far below. Weeds and other flora cover each surface as nature seeks to reclaim the ravine and eventually send the arena itself to the depths.

A creaky rope-bridge leads away towards another ancient suspended platform with the same weathered, upturned stones. Mossy footing, and uneven ground make each of these platforms unique in small subtle ways. While there is no seating for formal spectators, the ancient stones of the Massassi Arena hold an omniscient, aged wisdom that speak to the things they have seen and the battles fought through history.

A third rope-bridge leads to yet another platform, completing the triad of battlegrounds that make up the Massassi Arena.

Curiosity had always been a failing of Rin’s character. That burning desire to find out what laid just beyond the next hill, the next planet, the next galaxy. That was part of the reason she had happily pushed aside all the paperwork piling up on her desk back on Daleem and booked passage on a ship going somewhere else. Anywhere else. After several stops, the Warden had found herself here on Kalsunor. The arena was oddly compelling, it pulled at something inside of her and left her with the feeling of blood thundering through her veins. The call of battle, the call of the hunt, the call of her people. She had grown up as the runt of her litter, viewed as weaker because she was smaller. The Jedi did not see her as that and though she knew of no other living Cathar, she had not forgotten that she was part of a warrior species. Places like this arena always called to the feral side of her nature.

Stepping into the middle of the central platform, Rin knelt down and closed her eyes. Her mind began to wander, guided by the Force and searched for something she hoped would not be present. A place like this required meditation, quiet uninterrupted meditation. Someone, however, was approaching with the same nonchalant attitude she possessed herself. Sighing inwardly, the Cathar braced for her quiet to be disrupted as the individual entered the central platform and stood watching her.

“Oh, hello there,” the man said casually, almost friendly even.

The woman opened her amber eyes and regarded the man cautiously. He was not bad looking for a human, but something about his face set her on edge as she slowly got to her feet.

“Hello,” the Cathar said carefully, her accent made the word sound a bit odd.

The two regarded each other for a moment before Rin smiled softly and looked around. “Well, we are here and an arena is a good place for it. Do you wish to fight?”

The man looked around and nodded slowly. “I think so, yes. I’m James. James Malum.”

Rin inclined her head, her smile widening. “I am Xirini Kurai. My friends call me Rin. Let us see if we will be friends or not.”

The Cathar reached down to her belt and pulled away her sabers. With a tandem snap-hiss, the unstable blue and red blades came to life. The Sith returned the grin and his own crimson blade ignited, bathing him with a red glow. With an almost negligent flick of her fingers, Rin reversed her grip on her lightsabers. James moved with explosive liquidity towards the woman, the man’s movements and the congruity between him and his weapon made the Cathar think briefly of a large serpent moving towards its victim. Rin stepped back as the larger combatant struck with unrestrained precision, her eyes widening with each skilled strike.

Breathing hard, Rin seemed to lag a second slower than the Human's strike. The cerulean blade slid between her and the crimson blade giving it the appearance of a direct strike. She finished to move and flicked his weapon away from her as she let out a yowl of pain as the heat from his saber burned her skin beneath the tight fitting robes. As she spun away from him for a moment to breathe, James leapt at the moment of weakness and drove his blade at her with murderous intent. Moments before the strike had begun, a voice in that back of her mind alerted the Cathar to the incoming deathblow from the Sith. She batted the swing away like an annoying fly and kicked him hard in the stomach, the well-placed strike driving him back a step. She touched the spot gently with the back of her hand where the blade had cleaved through her robes and winced imperceptibly.

As she looked up at the man, battle fire blazed in the Cathar’s eyes as she became focused entirely on the fight, her senses sharpened by the Force as she watched the man before her, his body seemingly relaxed for the next struggle of wills and power.
