Competition: [TEB Week 1] Aliso Locations

Finished
[TEB Week 1] Aliso Locations

Aliso City is not quite a thriving metropolis, but it is a frontier spaceport town thriving with activity. A city that features all the things you would find in a city such as Mos Eisley (maybe with a bit less scum and villainy), such as cantinas, docking bays, or the local speeder vendor.

For this event, your assignment is to create a description of one of the locations in Aliso City, be it a single shop/structure or a larger neighborhood. Entries should be at least 200 words, but need not be excessively detailed or set up as a wiki article. The idea is more to create a concept that can been expanded to create an entire location. This is your chance to add something permanent to the Plagueis canon, and even those entries that don't place still might make it onto the DJB wiki as official canon for the clan. Additionally, remember that the more interesting the idea, the better. Sure, everyone has thought of a cantina and there might be more than a few entries that describe one. If you want to finish well, try to think outside the box!

**Byroad Village**

District Dorn, better known by the local inhabitants as Byroad Village, is one of six current districts that comprises all of [[Aliso City]]. The district is located near the center of the sprawling spaceport, approximately three kilometres east of The Pinnacle. Originally, Byroad Village was originally located at the limits of the recently settled city and was the temporary home of a multitude of slaves and their Foremen. The remaining [[starwars:Confederarcy of Independent Systems|Separatist]] structures were quickly settled by Clan-approved personnel. Plans to develop the city further soon followed, and by the beginning of 35 ABY, the district was both an architectural shamble and a hub of local activity.

The district was soon overtaken and geographically surpassed by the highly efficient Plagueian industrial machine. While it focused the bulk of its efforts on massive urban development and expansion, District Dorn was left to its devices. However, rather than fading into obscurity, the District became a hub of both legitimate and illegitimate business. By the beginning of 35 ABY, its unique location as the *de facto* 'city center' attracted a slew of various wealthy individuals, most of whom were criminals or sentient species affiliated with [[Clan Plagueis]].

Byroad Village is by no means a luxurious neighborhood, but in comparison to the remainder of the districts, it is second-to-none in standard of living (with the exception being District Aurek, located at the foot of the Pinnacle. This is where a multitude of Sith and high ranking personnel kept secondary quarters and living spaces). Most of the building were now interconnected by various bridges or added components, effectively interconnecting commercial spaces and living quarters into a massive indoor and outdoor neighborhood. At the center of Byroad Town was The Crossroads, a small outdoor space where a daily market is held in between the mixture of Separatist and Plagueian architecture.

The Aquifer Caverns

Underneath the ancient CIS outpost lay creaky platforms, long since rusted and ready to drop into the dark and cold water below. Having been traversed during the seizure of Aliso, they'd since become a favorite platform for daredevils and duelists. A place where the tang of metal and water left a sharpness in the mouth after just one breath, and the chill threatened to steal away the warmth of life.

A central platform of a circular staircase leading up to the surface spread out in an endless tangle of catwalks. The sprawling infrastructure was dotted with hidden traps still active on sensors and reserve power. Some functioned, some only half way worked, and some were duds. The durasteel, worn from long centuries of neglect, had sharp edges and sharper drops. Some of the floor grates were missing, leading the unsuspecting and unwary traveler to plunge into the murk below.

Where once was a bastion of clean water, the failure of the aquifer system instead left behind a cold, wet sludge, from which nothing returned. A dip into it would be a sure, swift end for all but the heartiest of combatants, and even then, they would feel its toxic effects.

Location: The Sand Pit

The Sand Pit is a newly established bar in Aliso city, located off the central plaza and tucked away within the shadows of the alleyway. It welcomes and accepts all patrons of Plagueis, from the Summit themselves to the lowest echelon of the Willing. Here they can relax and wash their stress away with comrades in jovial company. The fully stocked bar, with a specialty in Iridonian liquors, is a feat in that it stretches around the entire establishment. The area confined within, however, is the real crowd pleaser: a large encased sand pit. Here, challengers confident in their ability may provide an entry fee of credits and fight for the prize money garnered from entries and a portion of the club’s profit. Also at the behest of the mysterious owner, winners of the night get free drinks. Bets are allowed, but handled by a third party rumored to be under the employ of the Plagueis Summit. Extra security stands guard at the entrances and within the establishment to provide a deterrent for overzealous combatants and patrons. Not much is known about the owner of the establishment, but at their word the walls were decorated with extravagant images of Krayt dragons and a mixture of other flora and fauna.

## Lake Aliso
Lake Aliso is an approximately 3,000 acres strip of water that runs through Aliso City, providing for a a fresh water supply and plenty of fun for families from fishing to picnicking.

All three of the residential squares (with plenty of distance separating the three) have been built along the lake for a nice lakeview that allows inhabitants to enjoy nature.

In addition to providing enjoyment, the lake also for initial water training for Plagueis forces. For some, that’ll be the extent of training theyre required to have while others will then be sent to the coast for more advanced training.

## Skytrain Transit System
The Skytrain was built from reused CIS transit infrastructure. It connects the major hubs of Aliso City together and makes it possible to travel to seventy-five percent of Aliso City in ten minutes.

Traveling anywhere from ground level to twenty feet above the ground, it is one of the latest projects that Plagueis has undertaken to make the city more accessible and open for growth. The infrastructure plan also includes parts of Aliso City that haven’t been built yet in order to keep the transit system relevant in the future.

Unlike the dull grey that the rest of Aliso City is painted, the transit infrastructure is painted white with a sheer coat that both protects the paint and acts as a dust shield, prevent dust from sticking to it and necessitating less clean up.

## Financial Hub
Most of the trading and finances are done out of an old CIS hangar that was completely stripped and renovated by Clan Plagueis when they settled on Aliso. The restoration originally fulfill the necessity of removing everyday finances from the Pinnacle and other Plagueis locations, an additional security measure to prevent theft.

Since there was space that was not being utilized, the Financial Hub has since evolved into the prime location to find employees/employers, trade merchandise, and secure funding, which has increased the speed and efficiency that projects can be built throughout Aliso City.

Since its original restoration, it was added as a stop on the Skytrain Transit System.

## Harrower and Terminus Squares
Named for the lost cruisers in the Ascendant Fleet, Harrower and Terminus Squares both contain apartment complexes of sixteen buildings as well as dining and entertainment spaces for the lower ranking “Willing.”

With two sub-terran floors and three above ground floors, the buildings blend with the rest of Aliso City’s low height while remaining functional and have the living capacity of two thousand individuals for a total of sixty-four thousand individuals within the two squares.

## Transcendent Square
Named for the lost Khyron-class flagship, Transcendent Square houses the more important figures within Plagueis, from summit level to senior ranking officers in the Ascendant Fleet and Legion to senior level administrators and managers.

As such, Transcendent Square is not as uniformed as Harrower and Terminus Squares, instead comprising of several dozen buildings with varying amount of space. For the most senior of Transcendent residents, it could be as large as 3000 sq ft homes and for the most junior, a quadplex of 1000 sq ft.

For most, Transcendent Square is their alternative home and where they reside when they’re needed physically in Aliso City.

Hidden Cave.

A beautiful landscape, Aliso boasts a wide variety of flora and fauna and offers breathtaking vistas and views. Rivers and lakes dot the surface of the planet and one of the many large lakes drains over a steep cliff that leads to a smaller lake and larger, meandering river below. If one cared to take one of the hard to spot paths that lead behind the waterfall that it makes, a fantastic sight would greet them as they were led behind the main body of water that tumbles from above.
The path leads behind the waterfall to an opening of around fifty feet wide that reveals a large cave with enough space to house a small village. Stalactites and stalagmites line the floor and roof, constantly dripping water to the ground and creating huge pools.
The erosion of the rock by the water has created fantastic sculptures comprising of arched rock bridges and many other caves throughout. Because of this, a huge underground system exists below the lake above and its beauty is a sight to behold. The many caves, indentations and bridges could serve as ambush points for any would-be assassin to lurk, and the huge cave is home to what seem like hundreds of mynock colonies. Their shrieks can be heard above all else once they are disturbed from their slumber, drowning out all other noise. If let alone, all the noises that can be heard is the drip of water and the constant racing of the small rivers that make their way outside to join the waterfall.

(NOTE: If this is difficult to view, I have attached a .pdf file with the same text)

One thing I have always enjoyed writing about is a sense of an “underground” – in terms of culture, arts, taboos, and illegalities. After all, my character has a past of being a brawler in undergrounding fighting rings in Eden City. I also know that in major cities, black markets, drug rings, and criminal groups are a-plenty. Therefore, I was thinking one part of Aliso could be dedicated to a sort of underground culture – not even just necessarily based in criminal activities, but also in terms of a counterculture, or even a protest movement. I would imagine that, similar to East Germany during the Soviet Union, there are things citizens can and cannot say, or can and cannot do, while under the control of the Pinnacle.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire, but two of my favorite scenes happened to be a small circus group doing its last show, and a concert space where people drink and dance as musicians sing out plaintive stories of what it’s like to live under the regime and the shadow of theBerlin Wall. I thought it’d be really interesting to introduce the concept of an underground arts syndicate or cell in Aliso City, most likely situated in one of the dingiest boroughs. Warehouses, abandoned industrial buildings, and other gutted skeletons of past headquarters and hangar bays could be where this counterculture convenes. One more tangible example can be a building strictly dedicated to mural work and graffiti – on the outside, it looks pristine in its abandoned glory, but inside are the screaming artistic values of the art group working inside. The entire inside of the warehouse could be a studio space that could also be converted into a music venue – where certain musical groups could “stick it to the man” with their primal anthems and complaints.

Another idea could be a small theater group situated on the outskirts of Aliso, struggling to survive in the harsh military climate at the Pinnacle. After all, theater was somewhat addressed in Revenge of the Sith, but it’s not something that was really expanded or detailed. Perhaps this theater group is expected to put on shows praising the Brotherhood and the remnants of the Empire, but they secretly also travel around the city to put on smaller shows or pantomimes expressing their real emotional perspective. The tiny theater itself could be a former barracks outfitted with all the clumsy and poor makings of a floundering troupe – wood put together as a makeshift stage, a curtain made out of tarp, rickety seats and benches – where the bored masses convene and cry out for more gladiatorial-like entertainment (which could also be a part of the underground). In the end, you can add a bit of personality and soul to a city not just in terms of its physical geography, but also in terms of its cultural geography.

Obviously, there’s a lot to look over and specify, but I hope some of these tangible answers are worth something. Aliso may as well be an interesting city, not just a ball pit for the Dark Jedi to play in. Ooh, a ball pit! Anyone up for a pizza place called Pizza the Hut? I know, it’s a Spaceballs joke. But still!
