Combat Master #18: Just Keep Swimming (Now Hiring)

Well, it's been a quiet month for the ACC staff. I'm mostly to blame for that. Real life has my focus, so my task time has been limited and I'm not one to ask folks to do what I'm not going to be doing. Now, we could get some judgements in if all you serial extenders would finish a match! So get on that! Operation redirect blame is go, and it's super effective!

That said, there is some movement over here. To start, one of our most tenured staff has resigned. I'm sticking this in the foreword 'cause it's important. This is a member that took to the ACC for the first time in the middle of a mass event and we got to see the effects of judgement feedback in real time. That enthusiasm never waned and she came knocking on the staff door when openings went up. She has been a strong and intelligent member of staff, offering both dissent and agreement in measured parts. Her influence will be missed, but we will endeavour to march on. With the constant threat that the red-head might be hiding in the next room to launch some long, overly planned machination.

Now, let's get to the rest.

Current Tasks

So, we are semi-sorta-mostly organized over here in ACC land. We got ourselves an "Ongoing" folder. This folder is mysterious and full of intrigue. It lies there, carefully nested within a "Project" folder. Oooh, spooky. And that folder is nested further still! Within the confines of "ACC Staff". Le gasp!

What horrors lie within? Well, to start, we have the ongoing Scenario Hall venue document. We haven't seen a major uptake in scenario matches, so these haven't received much love of late. I've said from the outset that staff efforts in this regard depends on usage. If members don't use the hall, we won't work on adding new venues. It's simple cause and effect there, so it's clear how that will flow. I'd love to see more use, and then add to it as a result.

Another small little thing has been the mapping out of a potential change. It's a simple one, but would result in much more system clarity. My staff have worked to identify all cases of "Endurance" skill usage in our Feats and system documentation. I will also be doing a pass through prefab Aspects. We intend to rename "Endurance" to "Stamina" and finally (read: hopefully) clear up any lingering confusion about this skill. Our CS system does not have, nor is there an intention to have, a skill for pain tolerance. Endurance/Stamina is merely how long you can maintain your maximum Might and Athletics. Not the threshold of when "ouchies" happen. Armor is the only way to stop that for now.

Beyond that, we are also discussing a rewrite of the Intimidation skill. The intention is two-fold: clarify its use and bring it in line with current skill structure. This hasn't been a heavily leaned on skill, so it wasn't immediately apparent that there was need. Currently, this isn't a sprint to get done, but rather a slow walk. I'm still busy RL until mid-August. So, don't expect immediate news.

Finally, we have ongoing brainstorming of ACC events. Namely, these are small scale events rather than an add-on to something larger. They would be fictional in the same vein as the previous Godless Matron event, sans the scenarios tossed onto the opening posts. The idea is to throw ideas at the wall and discuss what sticks. Then maybe save a few for later. Might as well make a backlog.

Anyhow, that's what's going on with us. And now you know. That's half the battle right there.

Now Hiring

With Lucine resigning from her position, we have an opening for a new judge on staff. This is an opportunity to grow as an individual as well as to help others, as the ACC provides direct feedback on writing and also provides understanding, both to participants and staff.

For members interested in applying, the following is a list of requirements you'll need to address:

Responsibilities

  • Grading ACC Matches.
  • Grading ACC Qualification Exams.
  • Keeping up to date with the ACC Rubric, Guideline, and Policy adjustments.
  • Assisting the Combat Master with projects.
  • Contribute input to discussions on the CS Mechanics, additions, and revisions.

Required Qualifications

  • ACC Qualified
  • Passed (100%): ACC Combat Studies Exam
  • Strong command of English language, writing and grammar
  • Experience as a proofreader.
  • Keen eye and attention to details.
  • An example of one ACC match you have participated in that you feel shows your understanding of the systems you'd be judging

A new judge will go through the same training that all previous judges have:

  • You will co-grade 2 matches with the Combat Master.
  • You will co-grade 2 ACC Qualification Exams with the Combat Master.

All applications are to be sent to the Combat Master ([Log in to view e-mail addresses]) with the following in their subject: [ACC:J App]

I will be filtering e-mails based on the above, so if you don't want it lost in the aether I recommend using it. Final selection will be made by Friday, August 10th at the latest, with the Combat Master reserving the right to select early.

Good luck to all those who apply.

Yesssss, there are always machinations.

Do the thing, folks! It is a great experience, and Atra does not bite as hard as one might think!

An excellent role to apply for if you're interested in writing.
