Combat Master Report #12: Non-Force User Disciplines

Uh...hi. Is this thing on? Cool. Hello, yes this is Wally, and this is a report where I announce new and cool things. Believe it.

New Disciplines

I’ve honestly held off on writing this report because I wanted to be able to focus on the project I’ve been working on the past few months. Now that everything has been signed off on by the Voice, DGM, and Grand Master, I guess it’s time to dig in.

So, without further preamble, I’d like to announce 6 new Disciplines that are now selectable for Non-Force User characters in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood Character Sheet System.

What is a Discipline again?

Disciplines represent how your character prefers to use the Force and Skills. Disciplines represent fictional paths of training. Your character is unique and will ultimately fall into a “class” that best defines their style of fighting and way of life.

Each discipline is given two unique Feats that are only available to that Discipline. One Feat enhances an existing Force Power or Skill, and the second is a Feat that is unique to the Discipline.

Disciplines are not professions. This is why we have “Hunter” Discipline instead of “Bounty Hunter”. While the Hunter Discipline offers some cool perks that would make a good Bounty Hunter, a Weapons Specialist could just as easily be a good Bounty Hunter. This is also why you don’t have an “Assassin” or “Hitman” Discipline. A Sorcerer can be an assassin, but a Shadow has unique skills that could lend towards making a good Assassin.

For those of you most of you that are familiar with RPGs of varying kinds, Disciplines are similar to Classes, but with much more freedom in terms of developing your character however you want. In short, your characters are not limited by the Discipline you choose, they simply gain some specific abilities based on the Discipline you choose to follow.

OK, and what is an NFU?

NFU stands for Non-Force User, which is a selectable character designation members of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood are able to choose as opposed to the traditional Force User. As a Non-Force User, members can pick from two different Orders: Loyalist and Mercenary.

After choosing their Path and Order, NFU members are able to create a Character Sheet, where they can then select a Discipline to grant them unique Feats, which are situational abilities.

So, NFU’s get Disciplines too?

They do! And now, you get even more options to chose from! During the creation of a Character Sheet, NFU members will be able to select from the existing two Disciplines—Weapons Specialist, and Field Medic—but also the following new additions:

As I highlight each new Discipline, I’ll also reference the Canon characters that most closely resemble or embody it. These are not by any means perfect or definitive, but they are the most accurate references we can draw a line to.

Everything can be veiwed in the Character Sheet Reference Database (aka CD4WG). The Disciplines Wikipedia page has similarly been updated as well.

(Wally totally did not almost break the wiki template and need to be saved by Atra.)

Recognition

A lot of people need to be thanked for the work that has gone into this project. Both the ACC and Voice staffs had a heavy hand in assisting with edits, rewrites, tips, counterpoints, and mechanical review. They did this while also holding down their respective job duties, and I’m grateful to be a part of both teams and the talented members that make them up.

Special thank you to non-staffers that volunteered to help out. Atyiru helped with grammar, syntax, and general notes on the documentation and write ups. Major props to Korroth for scouring the documentation for stylistic cohesion and consistency, and then single-handedly working to codify the data into Wikipedia template format for me. Evant, Mav, and Sarin have also been big in steering the direction of the write ups and working with me to get down to a final proposal. It’s been months of sometimes tedious work, but I think what you guys are getting is the best possible content we could deliver.

I will either award individual merits for tasks completed, or work with members’ respective summits to lend support. I will highlight these in my next report. Short of that, thank you again to everyone who helped out.

Oh and major thank you to Atra. Like, seriously. His ability to handle data entry is scary. He managed to do most of the backend work for uploading the 36 feats to the database. On top of everything he does as Praetor, he still came in when I needed him most to get this finished and published. I don’t have enough words of thanks, so I hope each of you that read this make sure to thank him when you next are talking to him. Thank you Tyler, you’re the best Brosiedon ever.

With NFU Disciplines off my plate, I’m going to attempt to help the Voice team with Possessions in small ways, or whatever Evant asks for. Meanwhile, the ACC Staff will focus on keeping Qualification Exam turnarounds quick and constructive as well as managing the day-to-day queue.

Upcoming Projects

Here is a quick overview of what else I am working on:

  • More NFU Discipline Focus articles. I will be creating example NPCs like Wyn, and then writing a short fiction that I will annotate with explanations of the Discipline Feats and how they can be used in writing.
  • More Venues for the ACC (Backlogged from May the Fourth)
  • A new DB-Wide ACC competition (Details pending)
  • Scenario ACC (2v1 NPC, 2v1 Objective)

I do not have a timetable on any of these projects, so make sure to pay attention to future reports.

A Quick Recap

Since taking over as Combat Master, I’ve helped run three major ACC events. For the Brotherhood, it started with ACC Rivalries. We also saw the Grand Master’s Invitational Tournament last fall and the Journeyman ACC Tourney this past spring. For the Clans, we ran a bracket tournament for Clan Tarentum for their March to Dathomir internal event.

With each of these events, we’ve tried new formats, new scoring mechanics, and taken in member feedback while continuing to improve and grow the ACC for the membership base. Part of this experience has a lot to do with the following:

Consistency in grading by a team of judges with oversight from a single lead (Combat Master). Even on a recreational match, the ACC Judge staff often checks and bounces thoughts of one another to ensure that we are all on similar pages. Transparency in that any mechanic that we judge or grade on is viewable/available to the membership. There are no hidden rules or policies. If we mark points down for something, it is documented in the ACC Guide and relevant CS System database. Timeliness in ensuring healthy turn around time on ACC Matches and ACC Qualifications. Constructive feedback on each match so that members are able to learn and get better with every match, win or lose.

These four principles have been the focus of my time spent as Combat Master. If you see anything lacking in any of these categories, let me know immediately. We are always listening to constructive feedback, and the door is always open over the ACC Hotline at [Log in to view e-mail addresses].

Clan Event Halls

For Clan Events, I’ve gone and created the Clan Events Hall. This will be where Clan events get hosted.

clanhalls

For any Clan Event planning, please email the Combat Master at least 4 weeks in advance. This allows for planning, coordination, and allows us to make sure that your event doesn’t overlay with other existing plans. Once approved, I will work with whoever is organizing the competition to handle the administrative end of the competition while offering oversight.

Right now, the biggest obstacle for Clan Events going forward is that we don’t have a timetable on the next War, and have not even begun to discuss how the ACC will be used in it (it was notably absent from GJWXI). We are not going to run a Clan Event that overlaps with a Vendetta or War events, or will at the very least try out best to avoid overlap.

On a similar note, anything Vendetta related (which is any event that involves more than one unit) should be going through the Deputy Grand Master for oversight. Feel free to CC the Combat Master as well, though the DGM will have final say over Vendetta competitions.

Current Events

Currently, we are just wrapping up Clan Arcona’s Sins of the Past - Episode II: ACC Race. This event is tied to a month-long Clan Event being run internally by Arcona leadership. The Arcona Summit contacted me about four weeks before the start of the event, which allowed us time to plan/make sure execution could be handled smoothly.

(Hint hint, don’t spring things on the CM last minute.)

You can view the ongoing and finished matches here.

Scoring Formats

A quick note on the scoring format listed in the match details: this format was chosen to mirror the old ACC style from back in the day. While the competition has been going well in terms of matches generated and matches completed, I do not envision this format being used again on the DB-level.

Individual units are free to try out different scoring methods. Just know that anything DB-wide will most likely adapt a format similar to Rivalries. Atra, Archen and the ACC staff came up with an updated scoring system that I will talk about more in upcoming events. So, if your goal is to get members used to a scoring format they will most likely see going forward, keep that in mind when discussing things with the Combat Master and DGM.

ACC Exams

That’s all for now. I will be releasing more Discipline Focus articles over the next few weeks to help show off how these new Disciplines can work in real-time. This will probably go down as one of my shorter reports, but I'm honestly hoping to do a lot of expansion and explanation through follow up news posts and Discipline Features.

As usual, let us know if you spot anything, notice an error, or have feedback of any kind. You know where to find me, but the best way to report things is the Voice staff email, which is: [Log in to view e-mail addresses]

These were fun to design and get into the system! Awesome work to those involved.

Wahoo! Awesome Stuff!

Looks awesome!

Excited!

Awesome report. Wish the Ace could be accessed by us Force Users, but I'm glad to see NFUs get a variety of options.

Minor thing - Hunter's not on the wiki page.

Looks freaking awesome, guys. Thank you so much for all your work!

Great to see an option for ACC clan events!

Eeeeeeee! I have half a mind to ditch Zuj and make one of these attractive NFUs! (I would never, but drool)

Great work Guys!!

Minor thing - Hunter's not on the wiki page.

They will be added shortly, thanks Kiwi. Hunter was a last minute addition before launch and just didn't get transferred from google doc to wiki.

Awesome report. Wish the Ace could be accessed by us Force Users, but I'm glad to see NFUs get a variety of options.

NFUs can still be ACE pilots, just Force-Users tend to be built more around their abilities in the Force, whereas we see characters like Poe or Wedge make do without the Force.

Nice work y'all!

Variety is the spice of life. Love it!

Looking forward to using the Ace discipline in the future. Nice work!

Awesome update and cool new toys to bring the NFU's up to speed!

Great work by Wally and the CM team! New content for members is always awesome!

Sweet. New stuff! :D
