Proconsul Report #3 - Our Community & Your Role

In Canada

Citizens & Friends of the Imperial Clan,

Welcome to another Proconsul report, coming to you out the Great White North. Let me start off this report by sharing my hope that my fellow canucks had a wonderful Canada’s Day & our yankee friends had a great Independence Day (great film, glad they celebrate it) this month. I, myself, was enjoying the brief 2 months of non-winter that we get by going to the beach and drinking some great Canadian made hard cider while getting coloured a beautiful red like our national leaf. I felt so patriotic after I grabbed some all-dressed chips, bagged milk, and maple syrup on the way home only to stop for a quick game of shinny. I did spend the following Monday morning in some icebaths at the hospital as they thought I had heatstroke…but totally worth it.

I’m Not Sorry

To help you enjoy some more Canadian culture, especially since we didn’t qualify (again) for the world cup and you haven’t been able to enjoy us as much as you should - please enjoy our national anthem while you read this report:

Oh Canada

Imperium Quaestor

In case you missed it earlier today, Dek has announced his resignation from Quaestor of Imperium. This was not sudden or unexpected, Dek was kind enough to let the clan summit know early last month that this was coming as life got busier for him and we are thankful for the time he gave us to wrap things up. Thanks again, Dek, for your service over the last year and all the help you personally provided me. Will be missing you buddy.

Replacing Dek at the helm of Imperium is none other than our own Darth Aeternus. Korras obviously had been Aedile before this, knows what is going on, and is aware of the direction we want to take Imperium in. I'm happy to see another good friend taking over this role and look forward to what he does with the house.

This Isn’t the Report I Was Looking For

Admittedly, this wasn’t the report I had planned on releasing next. What was supposed to be a major update on several different projects going on behind the scenes and offering opportunities for others to get involved, has instead been replaced with a topic that deserves some high profile attention. To those looking for project updates, I will have another report out close to the end of the month when we have some new stuff launching and have capacity to take on some new volunteers. Additionally, Derek - I’ll get your lovely lady reference into the next report for you, buddy.

What This Report Is Really About

Our community & your role in it.

For some context, over the past couple months the clan summit has been approached by a growing number of concerned members who have issues with exactly how our community is changing. Unfortunately, the concern is about an increasing amount of, what I deem, toxicity happening within our numbers, our communication methods, and the guests that we have allowed in to our home. As will be discussed further in a moment, this goes directly against the type of community Elincia, Mune, & myself are trying to create.

So, to those causing this toxicity I want to put you all on notice - today. And for all of those that have felt something slipping into the community and brought these concerns forward, thank you & we are sorry this has happened - though we have some asks of you as well. To be clear, Eli/Mune/Myself don’t want to be a police force within the community. We’d rather focus our time on designing competitions, creating new opportunities for engagement and lore, and fostering a supportive environment for friends to hang out and chill. However, it’s our responsibility as unit leadership to ensure that our membership have a positive experience, are supported, and are well taken care of - and this responsibility expands to actions such as today.

As such, today I will be publicly addressing what kind of community the clan summit is aiming to establish, provide a general set of guidelines for our membership to familiarize themselves with and act upon, in addition to establishing the role we each have in our community.

Community Ethos

Scholae Palatinae strives to provide a fun, entertaining, & positive experience for all members of the clan. - Scholae Palatinae Leadership Manual

Our community ethos can be simply boiled down to that above statement, something I’ve pulled from the leadership guide that I’ve been working on for our summit members. While the guide itself has been more on the administrative and behind the scenes type of work that our unit leadership has to perform, it also has these nuggets about the type of community we want Scholae Palatinae to be. Elincia, Mune, & myself all strive to develop a community that is welcoming, friendly, provides opportunity, provides a place to share common passions, supporting friendships, as well as being engaging & entertaining. We want membership input, more than that really - as we try to provide opportunities for membership driven content. The clan shouldn’t be able propping up a tier of privileged members but rather working collectively as a whole for all of our mutual benefit.

However.

We want people to have fun, be entertained, and leave with a good feeling at the end of it. But this has to be a communal feeling. One person’s fun should not come at the expense of someone else’s. I can’t stress that sentence enough. Everyone in Scholae Palatinae has a different sense of humour, a different perspective on the world, and a different set of interest & hobbies. Our connection is Star Wars but that is not the end all and be all of who we are. And this leads into some of the challenges we face as unit leadership as we have to manage individual desires versus the common good. To be clear, the common good will always win.

Communication Guidelines

Ideally, the clan summit would like our community to be as informal and rule free as possible. Again, we don’t like to have to police stuff and furthermore; rigidness in the community is likely to have as much negative impact as toxicity does. However, it’s become clear during our discussions with individuals that without some sort of outline on what we expect and could be setting certain individuals up for failure if there isn’t a something official we can point towards in reference.

Therefore, we have created an official document to referred individuals towards. Right now, this exists as a google document (linked below) but I will be looking into having this put on the wiki for all to access. Since this does address guests in our channels it’s important that we give access to all.

For now, you can read the Communication Guidelines here

Your Role

As a clan under the Dark Jedi Brotherhood banner, Scholae Palatinae acts as a sub-community with it’s own unique set of characteristics that sets it apart from the other sub-communities in the club. As such, an argument could be made that each unit is its own community/club under the others and therefore has its own general set of rules & guidelines to follow. However, it’s also important to note that we act under the ethos of the club as a whole. Put simply, as a member you have the dual responsibility of acting appropriately as defined by both Scholae Palatinae & the Dark Jedi Brotherhood.

As such, I highly encourage all to familiarize themselves with the Club’s Covenant as well as completing the Shadow Academy’s course: A Primer on Member Conduct.

As an individual in Scholae Palatinae, the clan summit will be holding you to the guidelines that we have released (link above in the Communication Guidelines section). Your role as a member to adhere to their guidelines and conduct yourself accordingly. If you act inappropriately in our domain (clan mailer, clan & house telegram channels, clan forums, projects groups, etc.) you will be held responsible both within our clan community and the club as a whole.

Additionally, we are going to ask that, as a member, if you see others acting inappropriately within our domain you direct them to our communications guidelines - immediately. And then, I ask that you send a message to the clan summit with a screenshot of the incident so we can provide support. I call upon the folk saying; it takes a village to raise a child.

As a clan, we are a village. And it will take all of us to ensure the next generation of Scholae Palatinae understands what it means to claim to be part of our community. Another saying is all it takes…“is for good men to do nothing” and unfortunately, I have felt the concerned members have been doing this. It’s one thing to bring up your concerns will us, we will support - such as we have with the information in this report. However, withdrawing from the community because of someone else’s actions just gives them more freedom. We, the clan summit, need the support of the concerned membership just like they need our support.

Burnout

If you would allow me the moment, I’d like to follow-up our conversation above with a topic that I find is connected.

I mentioned above that Eli, Mune, and myself don’t enjoy being a police force or being overbearing with rules for the community. In fact, this is the most disliked part of our role and it takes its toll. More than any other aspect of the club, I find dealing with conduct issues to be the most taxing. And in turn, this leads to burnout.

I, personally, have been dealing with this recently. This report is an example of the toll it takes. I had initially planned to have this report out on the first of the month - in fact, I put out an AMA around that time because of this. Yet, it’s today that I finally have finished this report and it’s because the above issue as eroded much of my desire to stay involved.

No doubt, this is also true of those that brought their concerns forward.

I share all this because I think it’s important for everyone to understand the impact that these issues can have in the community. It’s not just an issue of chat conduct. What you say and do in our community, no matter what level, can have far reaching consequences. It can chase people away, it can sap their interest in our platforms and competitions, and it can turn new members away from the community before they even have been involved. I look at these conduct issues as a poison because of this. It’s something that can seep into other cells/tissues/parts of the body/etc. It is not a localized issue and spreads with time. So I implore those responsible for these behaviours to reflect upon their conduct and know that you hurt the clan as a whole when you behave this way.

Onto a happier topic…

#AskTheNautolan

Question #1:

James Entar asks: #AskTheNautolan Lizard, Frog, or Snake?

Answer: The trick, as I see it, is to go for whatever Malik chooses

Question #2:

James Malum asks: #AskTheNautolan What's the next major step in the CSP fictional arc?

Eli Answered before me: A plot update was released yesterday by Mune. Future steps are dependant on results of current competition totally Raiju **Raiju’s Answer:* So Eli fielded this one for me, but I’ll tail on the end.

So yes, Mune just announced our next event - Words and War. The event focuses on two separate paths and objectives with the actions of the clan determining the follow up. For the next little while our expansion within the system will be our priority along with whatever trouble the Collective throws our way.

However I do intend to do stand alone events to provide needed breaks from this storyline. Short, fun events to look at other elements of our society that the main storyline doesn’t touch. I’m working on a horror themed one now for October that will need to be run by the summits beforehand.

Question #3:

Rosh asks: #AskTheNautolan When do I have XP to get promoted?

Answer: When Howie and his team gets their work done :)

Conclusion

That wraps up this report. Should you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding the material above, please contact me directly at [Log in to view e-mail addresses]
