Scholae Palatinae Consul Report #2

Consul Report

Welcome to the second Consul report of the reformed Clan Scholae Palatinae! It is hard to believe that another month has come and passed us by. We’ve got a lot of cool stuff on the table as we move forward into the rest of the year.

This is going to be a bit different report, in that I’m going to be including bits from all the leaders in the clan. With a full set of leaders, I feel this is a prime time for everyone to (re-)introduce themselves both to the Clan and to the DJB. This is going to make an already long report longer. If you don’t care about learning more about who the leaders are, go a head and jump down past this first section to the rest of the report.

Intel: The Imperial News Net - State of the Empire

Let’s dive right into it. I am Xen’Mordin and I’ve been leading Scholae Palatinae for over four years now. Some would say I must be a glutton for punishment for this, but I’ve loved every second of it. Now with us reclanned, I am looking forward to setting the Clan on a very firm footing for the future.

That involves training new members to take up the mantle of leadership, providing stellar activities for members to participate in, bettering relationships with the other units, and making CSP an all around awesome place.

~ Xen’Mordin
Consul

I am Evant Taelyan. I got tied into the community back in 2000, as a gamer, as part of the TIE Corps. Different community, same road. I won't go into everything since, but I have been an active part of Scholae Palatinae since August of 2012, even if from the outside looking in, and it really is a great group of people. It's a community that keeps me engaged, all the stories, games, articles are just extras on top of what is the true awesomeness that is our Clan.

Experience wise, I am currently Praetor to the MAA as well as Proconsul of Scholae Palatinae. I'll keep the history short. I came up as a project manager over 2 years working with Xen, of the wiki, military lists, of competitions, not one of a leadership role. I was made Aedile of Scholae Palatinae 9 months ago, and it was renamed recently to Proconsul. I bring up this fact because, do what you love, what you enjoy, and the opportunities will come. I enjoy writing stories, and creating exciting moments in fiction. I enjoy helping people properly award their members encourage more accomplishment, seeing people get promoted when they're ready.

I am a servant not just of Scholae Palatinae, but of the entire Brotherhood. I work hard, to make others jobs easier. I take the blame when things are misunderstood, or go wrong, because I failed to do my job to explain or set it right to begin with, and I want all the credit to go back to the members for the great entries they submit to competitions and promotions and medals they earned.

I am very excited for what the future has in store for Scholae Palatinae. I have no idea what my future role looks like, but I am not so worried, because the future is so much bigger than just me.

~ Evant
Proconsul

This is an exciting time for our Clan, a time of building, bonding and brotherhood. We should remember the past, plan for the future, but live in the present.

CSP is full of legends, heroes and stories from the past. I was a small part of it, many years ago. Some elders may think of those years as the glory days, but there was also a pervasive darkness in that time. When I rejoined two years ago, there was a lightness here and I found sanctuary. I felt welcomed and I had trust in the leadership. I know that others in it have felt the same, whether beginning here or transferring in.

This clan has become a family and I am so glad to have found it and get to know my brethren. I enjoy making new friends and trying new activities, but I am fulfilled most when helping others. I want everyone to feel as welcomed and safe as I was made to feel here. I want everyone to feel comfortable to try new games and activities, whether their goal is improvement or just to have fun. My mission as Rollmaster is to serve and support our family members: old, current, and new.

A new era full of opportunities has just begun and begs each of us to be a part of its creation. We are the building blocks of a new foundation for our Houses. It is a time of preparation, as we will soon be joined by countless new Imperials. Many of us Krath have foreseen a great influx of Dark Jedi in the coming year. I am confident that as we grow, our Empire will thrive in this new environment, stronger than ever before.

Here's to the new glory days!

For the Empire!

Rollmaster

I am excited to be a part of this return to clan status that Scholae Palatinae is going through at the moment. It has been a long time since we could calls our CSP, and I know that we can continue to build on the momentum that we have coming off of our third place finish in the latest Great Jedi War.

Most of you know me, but Xen wants me to introduce myself anyway. I have been a member of online Star Wars clubs (EH and here) off and on since 1996. I have held many positions in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood as well as the old Emperor’s Hammer. Since my return to the Dark Jedi Brotherhood in 2007, I have been a member of Scholae Palatinae, and it seems that I have been decreed the de facto “Old Man” of the clan by our beloved Emperor.

My goals for House Imperium are to create an Imperial focused house that participates in a wide range of competitions while having fun within the Star Wars universe. As you can see, there are three very specific goals in there. First, I want our house to be the Imperial center of the clan, and each of our members will be assigned to either the military or to a government position. Secondly, I want our house to host a wide variety of competitions including fiction, poetry, gaming, puzzles, and gaming. Last, I really want us to have fun within the confines of this wonderful club of ours. Fun is while we are all here, and we all need to remember that sometimes.

Okay… enough diatribe from the Old Man.

Regards, ~ Dante
Imperium Quaestor

My career began roughly a year ago in May 2014. I joined for the same reason many of you joined; I had some spare time. Having been a life-long Star Wars fan finding the group presented itself as a novelty and on a lark I signed up. Stationed overseas gives you that kind of mentality of working hard, playing hard, and still needing something else on the side besides the social and work aspect.

In my short time in CSP I have had the luxury of being mentored by Koryn Thraagus and likewise paying it forward and training two wonderful members to the rank of Dark Jedi Knight. In that timeframe I served with Lucyeth as Sergeant for Acclivis Draco and ventured out to be a Professor in the Shadow Academy covering the Core Courses. You see, my passion is learning and training younger members. The awards and promotions (while nice) are not what we remember; it is the community that we engage in.

Honestly, I didn’t plan on being in the House Summit so soon. I was happy being at the BTL level and learning the ropes in the Shadow Academy. However, when opportunity presents itself take it. What I hope to gain from this position is more familiarity with running events, presenting awards, and helping members receive their promotions and to hit their career milestones.

These are lucky times in that CSP has a fresh start. I am a fiction buff and as such getting to start a new chapter that will have longevity is a daunting and rewarding task. I hope to work with all of you to usher in this new age and hopefully when my time is done in this role my superiors can say I served them as loyal as I could while delivering a good product, and those who I have responsibility to in the House can say that I made their time here better and more fulfilling. My words of advice are to have a career goal in mind at all times; I WILL reach the highest level in the Shadow Academy. And yea, along the way I want to mentor as many apprentices as May will give me and to not let down our Quaestor Dante and all of you fine men and women.

Imperium Aedile

I’m Koryn Thraagus, Quaestor of House Excidium, and I’ve had the pleasure of being a member of the DB for just over 7 years. Aside from some time I spent in the rogues while I was at university, Scholae has been my digital home for the entirety of those 7 years. In that time I’ve served as both Rollmaster and Aedile of Acclivis Draco back when it was a House, BTL when it became a battleteam, and Rollmaster of Scholae for the last 2 years.

My dad introduced me to Star Wars when I was about 5 years old and the magic of those films never went away. The opportunity to develop and explore that universe alongside people as passionate about it as me was - and continues to be - a huge appeal to me, and I suspect everyone in the DB has a very similar story. The simple fact is Star Wars drew me in, but it’s each of you, this community we’ve built and shared, and the friendships we’ve made, that keeps me coming back for more. It’s also this reason that I’ve nearly constantly held a leadership position since I was a Jedi Hunter: I want to improve your time in the DB by offering fun experiences and gripping stories.

We have a unique opportunity here in CSP. We have fresh new Houses free of history and identity. It’s up to all of us to shape them into something we will no doubt be proud of, and I think it’s important that everyone from the newest Apprentice through to the most veteran Master has their say in how we build. These Houses, this Clan, are something I want us all to be able to look back on in years to come and say with our heads held high “we made this together, we built this from nothing”. And if someone asks me if what we do was all decided by me, I’ll be able to answer with pride “No, my friends created this vision.”

I am Lucyeth and I will be the Aedile for House Excidium. I am looking forward to working with everyone and interacting with each other on our clan transition. I am ecstatic for our future and how the clan will build on a new foundation of identity and creating history. Each house has their own history to make under the clan and I will enjoy working with everyone on this. For the Empire!

Intel: Brotherhood Wide - The Policy Refresher

There has been quite a lot of news posts and policy updates over the last month. Here is the sparknotes version of these that you should be aware of.

The Naming Policy has gained the general point that no using the new canon or legacy names. This much like the no major interactions with canon characters in your history is a pretty straight forward concept. Obviously generic names like “Luke” will be fine, but if you try to be a Skywalker, the lovely MAA people will come and ridicule you.

The MAA has also updated the Legacy Title system. When implemented this allowed all DJM and above to request a custom “title” to be displayed on their dossiers. This update allows all Elder level members to request a title.

Our new Combat Master Wally has made some ACC changes. “Story” mode is now called “Single Ending”. This was done to clear some confusion as all ACC Matches should be “stories”. He has also announced you can start appealing the grading of a match should you see something extreme that was missed. There is also a list of new CS changes, as well as info about what he is going to be focusing in on while doing the CS 2.0 update.

The Headmaster has announced further changes to our degrees. If you’ve been working toward the Combat Maven and the Combat and Tactics Savant/Sage there has been some big changes. Split, we now have Warfare and Tactics Savant and Sage degrees available.

Socks has given us a lot of Herald News. There have been some pretty big updates to the Warbanner options. So go check them out. In addition she has opened a trial run of letting DJK+ members request a custom avatar for the site. If it gets to be too much they will pull it, but for the time being it is an option for you. I know Cruise is one of the members who has gotten this done so far, if you are looking to see one.

Finally, Shad has given some updates to character development policies. Some of you may remember the old Clan Powers. Until such a time as they are included in the CS they are “unofficial”. Custom Species as also now being removed as an option. Everyone is expected to play one of the “approved” DJB species. If there is a SW establish species you want to see added to this list, email him about it.

Intel: The Imperial News Net - Leaders in the Making

One of the biggest priorities for Evant and myself, is insuring that the future leaders of Scholae Palatinae have all possible support to aid them. This means training and preparing these leaders now.

It is a frightening moment when you find yourself in a leadership position with no support or information of what is expected of you in the context of your unit. To this end (and after stealing the concept from Taldryan), We have written up the Scholae Palatinae Leadership Guide.

This guide is based around how CSP is run, and functions. Every clan has its own personality and style. With this guide, basic expectations are laid out. It doesn’t cover everything there is to know, but it gives you a strong foundation to start with. With this guide any position can be filled, and the person stepping in will know what their context is in that position. Your fellow unit leaders will know what is expected of you, and can help you along as you learn.

Basically no jumping in blind to the CSP leadership structure.

Intel: The Imperial News Net - Those Battle Teams

When we first announced the new Houses for the Clan, we said there would be proposals needed before Battle Teams can be opened. That information is here. Feel free to shoot Evant and myself questions about this.

Battle Teams when properly utilized and managed are a great experience for the members involved. For many leaders, Battle Team Leader (BTL) is the first step of being a leader in the club. Clans are allowed three (3) BTs plus one additional one for each open house. For Scholae Palatinae that means we are allowed a total of five (5).

One of these is our Clan level team, Acclivis Draco. This is at the moment, the only planned clan-aligned BT we are going to have open. With four remaining possible teams, we are more than willing to see two teams open in both houses.

However we will not open teams just for the sake of having teams open. As great of a tool BTs can be, they are also easily one of the most difficult unit type to keep on track and functioning. It is all too often a team is formed, then nothing happens. If you had read our Housing Proposal, then you will remember we want to keep teams as flexible as possible, meaning they can open and close as needed. That said we also want to see these teams succeed and not be closed six months down the road.

As such we have put together this short list of expectations for the team, and what we need to see from you should you decide to propose opening a team.

Proposals Require:

  • Team Leader
  • Team Members
  • Team Name
  • Fictional Role
  • Short list of ideas for the first 60 days

Team Expectations:

  • Regular communication (Does not Require Team Reports but they are encouraged)
  • Regular competitions
  • Upkeep of a Team Wikipage
  • Minimum of BTL + Three Members

Proposals need to be sent to the appropriate House Summit in addition to Evant and myself.

Intel: The Imperial News Net - Communication STOP Here is a New Way STOP

By now most people in the club are well acquainted with the unit mailing lists. We have the discourse forums. We have IRC on the undernet network with unit channels. The rise of the smartphone has rather changed the communication game. For a while there have been DJBers using Whatsapp, which is a brilliant and quick use texting program.

However, a lot of us have issues with Whatsapp, as it requires knowing the phone number of the person you are contacting. While there are a handful of people you may feel comfortable with knowing that, it isn’t something you are going to go list on your dossier for any member to see. Over the last few weeks a lot of us have been looking into Whatsapp alternatives. And independently a lot of us have stumbled upon Telegram.

Telegram, much like Whatsapp is a quick use textingish application. You can have easily set up group messages. You can have easy one on one messages. It even includes “secret chats” where you can set messages to auto delete after a set amount of time of being seen. It has applications for Android, iOS, WindowsPhone, and desktop clients.

But what makes it especially interesting is you never have to give out your phone number for people to message you. Once Telegram confirms your telephone number, all you have to do is go to the settings and set a username. Then people can search for the username and message you. No phone number is ever seen by others.

Obviously this is never something that will be a required aspect of DJB life, but for those of you interested in it. Here it is. Wally has started a DB Chat group you can get added to. Evant and Mayda have joined me in using it as well. If we get more of you using it, we can set up a CSP specific group. I am also hoping more members of the CSP Leadership get in on it for quick messaging outside of bulky emails and IRC access.

That said, obviously I’m quite a fan and think it is really useful. So for those of you interested in it, you can message me @xenmordin. Because I’m super original with my usernames like that.

Nice report Xen, am glad that the Leadership docs could be of service to you guys!

Yeah it was massively helpful. Thanks again for sharing it.

So like, we can suggJST battle teams yet or nah?

Yes thats what that section says Drake. Just some basic expectations of what we want to see before forming them. want to give them as much support as possible, and that can only happen with some degree of understanding beforehand.

This is awesome. :D I love it. Nice report, guys!

CSP is the shiz. All fun, no games.

You mean ALL fun, ALL games. RIP Pepperoni

Excellent leadership guideline! It's definitely going to be helpful for our comrades. The report is also quite cool. :P

Dang this is a beautiful report, Xen! I'm gonna have to step up my game! ;)
