Malice breathed in deeply as she stepped foot once again on her home planet of Cholganna. The earth was soft under her feet and a cool breeze blew through the air, causing a few of the people behind her to shiver.

Having been newly promoted to Aedile of their house, Malice and Kalon had needed to find someone to fill the position of Battle team leader. They'd chosen Kul'tak Drol, who was both able to give orders to his battle team and follow orders from his superiors. Thus far, he was doing a marvelous job, and when he suggested that he wanted to take the battle team out for some survival training away from the base, Malice had immediately volunteered to take them all. Once the group had been gathered, they'd set off for Cholganna.

Malice had the most survival experience of the group by a long shot. Kul'tak himself had a little, but none of them came close to matching the experience of actually living on a wild, uncivilized planet for almost your entire life. The brisk breeze didn't bother her even a little bit, and it bothered her Nexu companion even less. She turned to the group to begin addressing them.

"Alright, we're here for one night only. I don't want to get in trouble because most of you die here, so we'll be returning tomorrow morning. If you survive and manage to retain some desire to continue survival training, then we can talk about more nights, but for now, it's one night only. Now, who can tell me some of the first things you should do when staying for an unknown amount of time in an unfamiliar location?"

A few people scratched their heads, but no one spoke up. This was going to be both more difficult and more frustrating than she'd originally thought.

"You," She said, suddenly pointing at a seemingly fit male. She knew his name was Felix, and that he was the only non-force user in the group. Though she considered it a slight waste of time to have him there, her desire to return to her planet overpowered her distaste for the human.

"Well, you should find shelter of some kind. Or make one." He answered, scratching the back of his head.

"Correct. Anyone else?"

A few murmurs of 'food' and 'fresh water' and a fire sprang up from the group. All of which were true, but there was one more thing they were forgetting.

"Those are all very good points." She said after they had quieted down. "But there is one more, very vital thing you need to do to even stay alive at all, and that is knowing what creatures you're up against."

She called for Aiya to come sit beside her, who swished her tail before growling lightly at the group.

"Aiya is a Nexu. They are extremely dangerous creatures of feline origin. They've got four eyes, a tail that can act like a very painful whip, more teeth than they know what to do with, large claws, and a good part of their body is covered in spikes. They are the top predators here on Cholganna, and they will not hesitate to rip you to shreds." she said, starting to pace in front of the group. They looked wary but not nearly as terrified as they should be, especially to survive an overnight stay on the planet. She hadn't wanted to jump right to the most drastic tactics, but she only had one night to teach the lesson she needed to teach, so it had to be done.

"Here's where the fun part begns. Everyone is going to march back onto the ship and place all your weapons down. You are to take no weapons with you at all. Anyone caught with one will be severely punished. I'm sure Aiya would love any one of you as a chew toy."

The small group mumbled to each other before heading back up the ramp and into the ship. Kul'tak followed to make sure no weapons were kept, and then after tossing Malice the only device that would unlock the ship again, he sealed himself in with them. Malice called the group back, laying a hand on Aiya's head.

"Now that everyone is unarmed, you've got a task in front of you. You're going to work together to survive the night, without weapons, and without me."

There's the fear she was looking for.

"Your objectives are to find food, fresh water, shelter, and to not get eaten. I'll return to collect whatever's left of you in the morning." and with that, she and Aiya took off into the treeline. For a moment, the group only looked at each other. She couldn't be serious, could she? Once it became painfully obvious that she was indeed serious, a few of them began to speak, forming everyone into a tight circle. Malice and Aiya hadn't gone far. In order to test their abilities they needed to be able to watch what they were doing, but they could each hide well enough that they wouldn't be seen by anyone, even with their force abilities.

Something else they did not know, was that Aiya and Malice had made a trip to Cholganna only a few days earlier to speak with their mother and her pack. They knew the humans would be arriving, and had planned out a way to test their responses to encountering the entirety of the pack. They had no weapons, and they were not strong enough in the force yet to cause the Nexu any damage.

Malice's thoughts were interrupted as the group below seemed to agree altogether and start off into the forest. She and her Nexu were deathly still as the group passed underneath them, not realizing their Aedile would be watching their every move.

"Wouldn't they get in trouble if we all died?" One of the group asked from below as Malice and Aiya stalked them from overhead. "I mean, they need us as troops, don't they? If we all die, we weaken their numbers."

"We aren't adding much to their numbers right now. Sure we increase the number but skill wise we don't matter. Not yet. That's why we're here, to get better and prove ourselves." another answered, who seemed to be one of those who had inserted themselves as a leader.

Malice and Aiya followed the group all the way to an area higher up on a hill, where it seemed they were going to set up camp. The group was divided into smaller teams who were tasked with a few of the mission objectives. One group set off for water, one for food, and one for trees and wood for a shelter and fire. Food would be the most difficult to be sure. There were many streams with fresh water nearby, but food was scarce if you didn't know how to catch it. Cholganna was lush with vegetation but as far as the fauna itself went, it consisted mainly of only three creatures. The Nexu, the Arboreal octopi, and the bark rats. Both of the other two were hunted by the Nexu, and could be great food sources. The Bark Rats were small and fast, often difficult to catch. However, if you could follow one back to their nest you'd find a few more. The Arboreal octopi were more of a problem. The Nexu hunted them easily but the octopi were usually much larger than the standard human. They stayed in the trees and liked to drop down on unsuspecting prey. She wondered absentmindedly how many of the group would be eaten by them.

After a few hours, the group was finally back together. Thus far no one was missing, but a few had a good amount of cuts and scrapes. A few had dead bark rats hanging by their tails that would eventually be cooked over a fire if they could manage to start one. One boy she noticed had hair that was standing up in all different directions, a result of getting the mucus from the Arboreal octopus in it. She would have loved to have seen that.

She raised her head as one of the group explaimed happily. They'd gotten a fire started, and their little shelter was coming along nicely. At least altogether their abilities equaled perhaps one Kul'tak. If they had known better, they would not have yelled so loudly. Though she knew that the Nexu pack would not come out to aid her until night time, if it had been any other situation they would not have been so lucky.

The smell of cooked flesh slowly wafted up to them. It did smell delicious, but now was not the time to get distracted. The smell could attract other creatures, so the group still had to be on the lookout. The sun was beginning to sink, painting the sky with brilliant pinks and reds and oranges. Though it was a beautiful sight to be sure, it greatly contrasted the overal deadliness of the entire planet. Soon they'd be going to bed, and if they were smart, they'd set up sleeping shifts. They weren't going to get much sleep anyway, Malice intended to make sure of that.

As the group assigned who would be sleeping first and who would be keeping watch, Malice silently climbed onto Aiya and the two jumped off to find their pack. Dark shadows cast from the trees could very well be seen as creatures with malicious intent to the frightened eye, and she hoped they were able to all stay alive without her watching them for a few minutes. Once they'd finally found the pack, they set off altogether to approach the sleeping battleteam.

Even those who had been meant to keep watch were starting to doze off, which was a rooky mistake. The lives of their groups depended on them, and though Malice would have liked nothing more than to pick out those of them that had fallen asleep at their post and let the pack eat them, she decided against it. Scaring them out of their minds would have to do.

Their mother let out a piercing cry, which was often done at the start of hunting missions. Malice watched as not only those who were supposed to be keeping watch woke up, but all of the rest who were allowed to be sleeping. She stopped the back from dividing and surrounding the group, as it would be more frightening to see them all come out at once. Even that did not happen straight away. More shrill cries echoed the first, and the group scrambled to their feet, pressing their backs together to stay on their guard. Malice and Aiya stayed behind, watching the terrified looks on the groups faces as the rest of the pack slowly came out of the shadows and paced towards. A few angled weak force pushes in the packs direction, but they barely ruffled the feline packs fur. The darkness made it difficult to aim and see, and eventually it was only the reflective eyes of the pack that stood out against the night sky.

The group wasn't doing anything. No more attacks, no attempt to run, nothing. They just slowly backed together as the pack now began to surround them. Once they were within attacking distance, Malice called them off, walking out with Aiya. The group looked at her in surprise, still very tense.

"All in all, you didn't do terribly. You found food and water, made shelter and got a fire started, but you also did a lot of foolish things. Any sort of loud sound will draw predators to you. Even cooking food can be a death sentence. Usually setting up shifts for sleeping would work, but your watch shift fell asleep almost instantly. That would have gotten you all killed, so for those people, we'll have a special training back at base. For the rest of you, I suppose you'll be allowed to live. If we do this again, make no mistake that the stakes will be raised, and if some of you die, I will make no attempt to find your body. Back to the ship."

The group hesitantly moved towards the ship, stopping when they got to the few Nexu that had been guarding them on that side. The felines stepped aside, and the group did not stop running until they got to the ship, banging loudly on the doors to have Kul'tak let them in. Unfortunately, Malice still had the only device that would unlock it, and she had no desire to leave so quickly. They'd be fine waiting.

She thanked their mother and the pack before turning to enjoy a pleasant and calming walk back to the ship together through the familiar forests of their home.

Deserted

    Delak awoke head down in the mud. He had been on a scouting mission with Shadow Guard when his ship had been shot down. He didn’t know how he had become ejected so far from the ship but it was in a fiery hulk behind him. He had his lightsaber but no rations. The trees and plants in this area were dying and brown. Something had happened to the vegetation in this area of the planet and that was part of what Shadow Guard had been dispatched for. It was to ascertain the cause of this death. Delak sat up and looked around as he heard howling creatures in the distance. He wasn’t sure how far away they were but he knew that he needed to keep his head about him because the sun was going down quickly in the sky. The oranges and purples of the setting sun were a bit relaxing until he realized how alone he was out here. He turned his attention to his surroundings and started to focus on the Force.

    As Delak sat in meditation he could sense creatures moving upon him staying just out of eye sight but not out of sight of the Force. They seemed like mutated monsters. To him they moved as Tusk Cats moved but he couldn’t be sure unless he had the misfortune to come in contact with them. He sensed something in the background. It seemed like a cavern in the mountains somewhere. The cave seemed corrupted, like it was flowing with the Dark Side of the Force. Everything dying in the area proved that it could be some sort of Force corruption happening to the environment. Delak stood up and took off in the direction of the cave. He ignited his lightsaber for light as the sun continued to drop in the sky. The stars began to ignite like candles being lit in the night.
The cavern was very dark except for the faint green glow in the back of the cave. As Delak entered the cave he felt as if his life essence was being drained. He continued to enhance himself with the Force and moved further into the cavern. As he approached the back of the cave the entire room lit up with green glow from a crystal. The crystal seemed to be causing all of the issues in the area and the Force was very strong with it. As he approached his skin began to burn and he could smell burnt flesh. He looked down to see his skin singeing off. He decided against taking the crystal for himself and he instead flung his lightsaber at the crystal hitting and destroying it. The Force disappeared from the area and normalcy returned almost immediately. Delak decided to head back to his crash site to wait for Shadow Guards return. He would report his findings to the Emperor as soon as he returned to Judecca after he had also debriefed Lexiconus and Blade about the situation.

ONE NIGHT, OOD GATHERED THE BATTLETEAM TOGETHER IN THE NIGHTHAWK CARGO HOLD TO TELL THEM A STORY…

This is a story that Braecen asked me to write and deliver in this fashion…

It happened a long time ago. alternatively, it could have occurred last week.

The great and wise Sith Morda… Darth Veritas was lounging about his flagship, an old stardestroyer he had acquired. Rumours had reached him a few days ago of a group of three Piggie… Gammorean Jedi Masters trying to re-establish a Jedi Temple. Morda… Darth Veritas had decided to deal with these lighties himself, he didn’t need allies for this for he was a Sith and a mighty one at that!

Arriving in orbit of the planet Ssarg’Deird’Rof’Mynonys, he ordered his vessel to establish an geosynchronous orbit over the location of the Jedi Stronghold. Turning to a lieutenant, he ordered a probe sent down to scan the structure and get him images of it.

Laughing to himself, Morda… Darth Veritas looked at the images projected back to him. A planet without good building materials! Why else build a Jedi Temple out of straw? With a snigger of amusement he turned to his command chair – mounted atop a suspended platform to allow the short Sith to appear to tower over his minions.

With a huff and a puff he expelled the breath from his lungs and blew the hous… Temple down by pressing on the firing button. Looking with glee, he quickly grew enraged as he noticed the Jedi flee into hyperspace with an antique ship. “We came out of hyperspace too close to the system! You have failed me for the last time Admira…” Looking around in bewilderment, Morda… Darth Veritas turned to the captain standing next to him.

Oddly, the man seemed to be wincing. “My Lord, you killed the Admiral last week for not ensuring a steady supply of Archie-comics for your bathroom. You have yet to promote someone to the post.”

“Consider yourself promoted then Admiral. And now, die for failing my orders!” As the Captai… Admiral died, an ensign moved closer to drag the corpse away. “My lord, we now need a Captain and an Admiral. The first officer died a few weeks ago when your soup was too cold and needs to be replaced also.”

A WEEK LATER

Approaching the second planet on his list, Morda… Darth Veritas was annoyed. He’d been forced to kill the entire janitorial staff
days ago for forgetting to put up the “caution – slippery floor” sign. It had been unavoidable really, everyone had seen his underwear, the boxershorts decorated with little Pravus faces. The stench from the corpses was starting to get annoying. Note to self, never kill the dudes that drag away the corpses!

Ordering a probe sent down, the Sith looked upon Doow’Tub’Gnihton and its vast forests. He already knew what would be found. The only material on this planet that the Gammorean would think to use would be wood. A wooden jedi temple? Really?

The droid sent back images of a rather poorly built Temple structure and… was that the ship from Ssarg’Deird’Rof’Mynonys? Two piggies… Jedi Masters at once! Morda… Darth Veritas huffed and puffed – as he ran up the steep stairs to his chair to open fire on the structure…

A MONTH LATER

The Jedi had escaped again! He’d massacred 155 crewmen from the maintenance department for not checking the guns before the attack. The turbolasers had jammed for precious minutes, allowing the two to escape. Luckily their trajectory had been tracked and they were now approaching tey’llird’eht’wonk’tnod’uoy’yllaeR in hot pursuit. They had become a bit slower as well. The stardestroyer stank of decomposing bodies. The freshers had stopped working two weeks ago, and without technicians most rules relating to hygiene had been suspended. Some sort of plague had killed the support staff just last week. The last doctor had figured out what had happened before dying, apparantly some of the corpses had been putrifying and dripping into the watersupply. Morda… Darth Veritas had wisely ordered the surviving crewmembers, the 40 people that worked on the bridge to stop drinking water and just drink alcohol. In a gesture that seemed to endear him to the crew, he had allowed them to use his personal stock. He had decided to drink the blood of his surviving crew, which they didn’t seem to like. Fickle non force using soldiers!

Ah, there the Jedi Temple was. It had been carved out of a mountain? If the great and wonderful Pravus hadn’t ordered… With a huff and a puff, he reached the button to open fire.

Some sort of planetary shield protected the final Jedi Temple! “Increase firepower!” he yelled before rushing down the stairs to follow his orders. It was hard work operating a Stardestroyer by himself, but by the Force, he would succeed and prove himself to the Dark Lord! He’d been gifted this ship to prove himself… Okay, he had stolen it from the person who was assigned the mission but still! What could an Elder do that he couldn’t? Racing back to his throne to gloat – as befitted a good Sith. The Grand Master would surely reward him for this.

Any starship requires constant maintenance to keep in working order. A month without maintenance is sometimes enough to even condemn a ship to the scrapheap. With a huff and a puff, the mighty stardestroyer blew up. The ensign who had informed the Sith of the lack of a First officer and who had been hiding in a landing craft managed to launch his pod just before the blast. It crashed into the planetary shield emitter, disabling it. The fall had knocked the young man unconscious, thus he could not follow protocol and deactivate his shields. As the stardestroyer detonated, a cloud of fuel entered the atmosphere. This pollutant reached the shuttle and ignited the atmosphere, killing all Jedi on the planet.

This is the tale of how Ensign Grevial received the highest decoration the Brotherhood could award him as well as how he became General Grevial, the Jedi Bane.

Alara peered down below at her new-found enemy. The fool was just leaving Shadow’s cabin outside of Judecca.

“I’m just going to get firewood darling! Be back soon,” Brandon Tarsus kissed his new wife on the cheek.

“Don’t be off too long,” Shadow giggled. She watched him walk a few paces, and then closed the door. With a smug smile, Brandon turned away from the cabin and walked down the forest path.

“How did I ever get so lucky…” Brandon chuckled to himself. This sparked fury within Alara. She growled under her breath. Quickly yet quietly, the Knight positioned herself among the tree branches and hopped from one branch to another.

Stupid fool. You won’t even know what hit you, Alara smirked to herself. That’s the last time you try to cross me and my family. You will be removed permanently. You took my sister from me...you…

She instinctively reached for her saber, but abruptly removed her hand from it. No. She couldn’t kill him with her saber. It would attract far too much attention. People would see the yellow light, and his wounds would indicate that a saber-user was the killer. It would cause chaos in the Brotherhood. She couldn’t risk that. Alara patted the side of her thigh. Good. She remembered the dagger. It was all planned out. The girl even remembered to wear camouflaging colors to hide from plain sight. Her victim stepped further down the path and closer to the large pile of firewood already cut for the harsher climate season. He was so close to his doom. Alara tugged the hood over her eyes, and jumped to a closer branch. She was almost directly behind him now, just slightly veering to his left. Brandon bent down, humming a playful tune, and picked up a few logs. Alara took a deep breath, and prepared to thrust herself towards the enemy. As soon as she began to push on the branch, a sound of barking came from the path behind them. With a scowl, Alara scaled up the tree in attempts to be hidden. Loki, the anooka belonging to Shadow, greeted the Professional with a lick to the elbow. Holding the logs in his strong, muscular arms, Brandon nuzzled the pet and laughed.

“Ah, my old friend. You will always have my back. You can’t even be away from me for a moment, can you?” Brandon smiled. Loki barked again, as if agreeing to his new master’s statement.

“Neither can I, my love,” Shadow stepped down the path to her husband. She gave him a perfectly cut smile, and kissed him on the cheek, “Do you need help?”

“Make my new wife carry our firewood? Never!” Brandon replied, blowing locks from his brow.

Shadow giggled, and stepped behind him, “Good thing I’m stubborn.” She reached for a few logs and then positioned herself beside her husband.

“Oh what will I do with you…” Brandon laughed.

“Just stay by my side. That’s all I ask,” Shadow smiled.

“I vowed that I will. And I’ll hold to it. Let’s get inside now, my darling. I would love to drink some wine and cuddle next to you by the fire.”

“Aye. Sounds good,” Shadow nudged her husband, and hugged his arm with her neck. The pair walked towards light of their cabin while Loki danced about them.

Alara growled with eyes that flickered angrily in the moonlight. Damn. Those two are so closely knit. I’ll have to find another way.

As the two went back into the cabin, Alara scaled down the tree and ran swiftly through the woods. She was going to kill him. After all he put her through, she knew it was her destiny. It would just have to be on another day.
