Leadership Opportunities

House Galeres Quaestor Open Applications

With Kris stepping down from the seat as Galeres Quaestor, and things calm enough with the GJW over, we’re officially opening applications to take on the challenge of GAL QUA. The application process will be open for about two weeks until 22 October. Me and Atty will be asking questions if we have any, so don’t be surprised if we poke at your apps a little bit here and there.

Historically, Galeres is a challenge for an up and coming leader. It is thematically the “militant” house of Arcona, with closer ties to the AAF than the Qel-Droman counterparts. This can be daunting to faces new to the job, especially when some of your members might not be really into the military aspect. And that’s fine! It’s part of the fun of making things to keep your members engaged. As someone who came to Galeres expressly for this very job some years ago and put a lot of work into it, it’s a post that’s very near and dear to me, and I could say plenty of great things about good ol’ Gal.

So what are we expecting from a Quaestor?

  • Communication. Ideally a 24 hour response time to direct messages, or 48 hours to less direct like e-mail. Reports on the DJB site are generally a monthly expectation, but may vary depending on what’s going on at the time. Being able to communicate ideas, plans, and goings on is essential, as is timeliness to new and ongoing topics. It also includes the ability to tell us when you might need a leave of absence for real life, which always comes first, or even leave the position if necessary.
  • Drive. Your job as Quaestor is to manage a House. That means keeping your people motivated and giving them activities. Build your fictional plots with an actual storyline in mind, however long or short.
  • Develop. Quaestor is higher-level leadership, with the expectation that you are teaching your subordinate leaders (Aedile and Battleteam Leader) how to do things in the DJB. Building award and promotion recommendations; planning stories and events; sometimes things as simple as engaging with members.
  • Build Identity. However much there might be disagreement in some camps, units are never more active than when they have a theme, objective, and/or widget for them to cling to and call their own. Without that, units and subunits may as well be any other House or Battleteam. Make it special, take what was made before, and keep building on it.

Application Requirements

  • A bit about you. Help us get familiar with you as a leader. Just a little detail on what experience you have in the club, what your style looks like, and what you like to do as a member/leader.
  • What is your take on Galeres? What do you know about the House? Have you read the wiki, have prior experience with it, or are you going in completely blind?
  • What are your plans? Tell us what you’re hoping to do for the House, both administratively and fictionally.
  • Questions and concerns for us. This is also a great way to poke us on things we didn’t cover in the expectations, requirements, or in general. Better to get it out of the way before you take the seat, too!
  • If you are currently in active leadership, provide us a plan to hand over your duties and work to your successor. It’s very easy to lose continuity and sight of past work when successive leaders don’t share from their tenure and what was shared to them.

Again, applications are due by 22 October. Send them directly to me and Atty by e-mail. Your first challenge: find the e-mails. :p

House Galeres Aedile Sub-Applications

While we (me and Atty) aren’t appointing the Aedile of any House, as I believe that’s up to the Quaestor to decide, we plan on retaining any applications that didn’t make the Quaestor cut for consideration for the also-open Aedile spot. If you only want to be considered for Aedile, you may send an application, but please understand that the selected Quaestor may ask for additional information or a supplementary app. This will hopefully help streamline the process for Galeres’ leadership.

House Qel-Droma Aedile Opening

Also due by 22 October, Tali of House Qel-Droma is running applications for Aedile. You’ll find that Tali’s requirements are all but identical to ours, so if Galeres isn’t quite your desired flavor, you can always try things out with the resident Lek-head! You can find all the details in this report.

Other Active Openings

The Fist office, which runs gaming activities for the Brotherhood, [currently has openings for both Praetor and Magistrate. Rajhin, aka Turel, is looking for motivated people to help him run this niche field of the club. If interested, applications are due by 15 October.

The Latest WAHR is Over!

We are still probably at least a week or two from seeing the results of the War, but even just from a participation standpoint, we in the Summit want to let you all know that you rocked socks on this! This wasn’t exactly the most standard Great Jedi War: new competition types, a return to small-team Run-Ons, and with an opponent that was still rather ambiguous, giving us the challenge to fill in the gaps. And you guys delivered at every turn. So we felt it worthwhile to give you guys the participation statistics as a sort of showcase to satisfy you in the meantime.

So! Out of roughly 1060 unique entries (i.e. competition submissions, not participants), Arcona generated an approximate 450 of them, giving us around 42% of the submissions to all the competitions. Additionally (and also just as approximately), of Arcona’s 56 members, 43 of you put in at least one entry. That is an astounding 76% of Arcona that was involved in one way or another! This might even improve as entries are manually added here and there for group competitions.

Special props to the folks who maxed out their bin participations: Wally, Ood, Mune, Atty, Uji, Kord, Eleceos, Zuji, Tali, Zuza, Archain, Bril, Doon, Sagitta, Asani, and Luka! I tell you, I still don’t quite understand the math of bins versus competitions, et cetera, but getting in even the token entries is important. We had even more people that got eight of nine bins and below, and every single one of them is appreciated, and I don’t even know how many of us got 75% and above competition participation, so for my own sanity I’ll keep the list there until we get more results.

Good job, Arcona! Keep kicking all of the butt! All of it! Yes, even that one! And that one over there!

Other Things & the Horizon

Roleplays

If you're interested in searching out ongoing group RPs or, even better, starting one of your own, keep an eye on #rp-lobby on our Discord. Currently, Erinyes' open Farmer's Market RP is still ongoing if anyone would like some chill vibes, but it takes place before the War, so bear that in mind. Otherwise, the Exarch Staff will resume running new Envoy RPs now that the War is over, and there's always something being planned! Have a story idea? Want to meet new people who are awesome? Grab your buddy, make a thread, and go write! 100 words back and forth in two or three lines is an Envoy Mark, duckies and gumdrops! Go get it! Not sure how to start? Just ask! We'd love to write with you.

Competitions

  • Darktober 2023 (GFX) - New comp every 2 days! as described in her own words in her newspost, Socks in running your classic 31 days of "inktober" or drawing for October, dubbed #darktober here because we're the Brotherhood! Ink is not required. Nor is anything fancy. Just doodle whatever you wish by whatever means related to the daily (ish) prompts, submit it, and COME SHARE IT! This is a big community event for artists, and that includes everyone who says they aren't artists.
  • Propmtober - New comp every week! Is spooky or spoopy or just angst/drama/pain/feels your vibe? Is writing your jam? Come write with Sagitta and Atty whatever you desire. There are four competitions, each spanning a week, and each with at least seven prompts to choose from. Select any to write your story. AND! THIS CAN BE CO-OP! Write with a friend if you want to! We have no triggers we take no prisoners uncheck publish if you must BRING. IT. ON.
  • GJW XVI - Aftermath (Fiction) - This comp pairing is run by Ood and focuses on the aftermath of the war! (Who would've thought?) Write a record in some sort of journal, story, or report format from the perspective of your character who was in the war.
  • GJW XVI - Aftermath (GFX) - Similarly, an art comp, but asking you to depict a scene of ANYTHING that happened in the War. Were those War prompts too specific? Here's your chance to depict whatever you wanted to from the fantastical Ethereal Realm or to show your character dying and sobbing and fighting the ghosts of their dead parents/lovers/children/best friends they betrayed and murdered etc etc etc.

And if you're ever jonesing for more comps to look out for, here's a reminder that you can find the Competitions Page under the Main dropdown on the site, and from there, look for Upcoming Competitions. I'm excited for a few fics myself!

Worth checking all the news, and participate in the mentioned competitions.

Great report.

Thanks for the RP plug, Q! I'll be rolling the Farmers' Market RP over to something similarly-themed but set after the War, to help keep everyone's timelines straight. Hope to see you all there!
