Scholae Palatinae Proconsul Report #1 - Let Me Clear My Throat

Proconsul Logo

Citizens & Friends of the Imperial Clan,

Welcome to my first report as Proconsul of CSP! I want to begin by thanking Elincia & Mune for the great deal of trust they have put into myself. I’m very happy to get this position, however I also have a healthy bit of nervousness taking this role. It’s not easy to go from serving 18 members to 49 members + the Palpatine family. This is likely to be one of my most challenging trials to date and I’m excited for the opportunity.

That said, we have a lot to go over and I’m known for my great length - and for writing long reports - so let’s dive in.

Oh! Before we get any further, this report’s got a theme song so feel free to listen along with the ride.

Let Me Clear My Throat

Introduction

My name is Brett, however, for the past roughly ten years - I’ve gone by the name Raiju Kang. Yet, my story with the club doesn’t start ten years ago - as roughly fourteen years ago, I first joined the Brotherhood as Warhunter and was sorted into House Kirleta of Clan Satal Keto. Some of you may be more familiar with that name as I held it through Clan Satal Keto, into the merge that formed Clan Plagueis, and carried it with me as I first followed Xen to the Imperial Clan I now lovely call home.

Raiju

However, my pathway has not been as straight as the above would suggest and I’d like to take the time to acknowledge the faults of my past. After a brief departure from the club, for a destined to fail WoW guild, I later returned and started anew as Raiju Kang; this time sorted into Clan Tarentum. From here, it has brought me into a circle of bouncing between CSP, Taldryan, Odan-Urr, and back to Tarentum - No offense to Arcona or Naga Sadow. A hard truth I carry with me to this day, and something I make sure to address in my applications; is that I am known as a “clan-hopper”. It isn’t a fond term, nor do I look on it dismissively as I understand the negative associations that clan hopping can have. However, it is a part of my past and I wouldn’t be doing anyone good service not to highlight this as a known fault in myself and something I am pursuing to remedy. Additionally, something I have had much greater success with, is the change in attitude and perspective I’ve developed over the years. Dare I say, I have mature since much of my earlier days - especially as Warhunter.

Yet, despite the fear that all this baggage could hurt me in each of your eyes; I do bring it up for a specific reason: I share the above in an effort to build a mutual understanding and trust between each of you and the new Proconsul of Scholae Palatinae. It may be human to error, but a leader needs to be self-aware of their flaws to best serve their membership.

Regarding my experience, for those interested, I’ve served in every position from Battleteam Sergeant to Consul - and for most, multiple times. I’ve created successful, long standing Battleteams, founded a House, brought in new members and engaged them as Rollmaster, been both an Aedile and Quaestor of sub-unit houses, been Aedile of an independent unit, and lead separate units as Proconsul and Consul. I have been involved in this unit’s development before, such as Aedile and later Quaestor of Caliburnus, while also being involved in the development of many others; and I recognized both the bad and good that has came from my transfers between units. I’ve also been a Professor for the Shadow Academy, a member of the Appeals Panel, and a mentor of several prominent members of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood - and have grown to call on these people as well as others as a mentor to myself.

Most importantly, I hold friendships with someone from almost every unit of this club. I like every unit, and don’t believe in the attitudes certain units have had in the past. I do believe every unit needs to have its own theme (not everyone can be [unit] Darkity-Dark) and this should be a recruitment tool. I believe the MAA staff has a standard to protect, and that’s for the betterment for the club; however, I also believe leaders have the responsibilities to insure their members are properly rewarded and must test these standards, respectfully. I believe the Shadow Academy’s importance is downplayed by some, and it’s potential has yet to be fully met. I think all the Seneschal/Herald/Regent teams are a luxury that no other club can compete with, and that some people have taken for granted. I’m glad to see the Fist and Voice replace the duties Order leaders had. And I think the Chamber of Justice is an imperfect system that is a requirement in our modern era.

Brett

Finally, I’m a thirty-one year old employment specialist from London, Ontario. Additionally, my family and I have business ventures in winery and cider. I have been living with my girlfriend and our two cats for over three years now, and have been dating for over six years - and somehow she’s cool with these magical internet friends I have. Over two years ago, I developed a (thankfully, benign) brain tumour that has given me a lifetime label as epileptic. The struggle I had with this robbed me of my job(when first diagnosed), (temporarily) of my girlfriend, and prematurely ended my term as Consul of Tarentum. #seizuressuck

To connect back to why I think all this is important, and to justify the length of this section, I share all this because I believe my role is to help Elincia head the development of our little community. It’s something we have to put into practice, so to better develop our little club within a club - I think it’s important to know why I find this place important, what I’ve done, what I believe, and who I am as an individual. As always, please feel free to connect with me if you want to know more and I encourage you all to learn from each other how we each stand on these topics

What This Club Means To Me

This club isn’t just about Star Wars, or gaming, or writing fan-fiction. Often I speak to others about what we do here, and many just don’t get it. It can be a little bit hard to explain the value of pounding out dozens of matches of Jedi Academy, researching trivial pieces of lore, or staying up late to see if GJW scores have been posted - but these are just the surface activities of a hobby that has changed my life in many ways.

Since I joined the Brotherhood, I’ve;

  • Taken lessons on a number of topics including conflict mediation, grammar studies, proposal writing, and programming
  • Became knowledgeable about countries, cultures, and people from place I’ve never even travelled
  • Developed my hard skills in areas like photoshop, MS office, computer sciences, and writing
  • Developed my soft skills in areas like teamwork, communication, debate, and leadership
  • Been educated on literature, class struggles, and social minorities - having first met an openly homosexual person through our chatrooms and learning about some of the struggles
  • Developed myself personally as an individual; growing from a bratty, unworldly country boy to a mature, contributing member of society
  • Developed myself professionally; first learning here many of the skills I now use as a business consultant as well as an owner

I share all this because I think it is important to know who I am is not a matter of what screenname I go by, what unit I come from, or how many positions I’ve held in this organization. I’m a product of this organization as a whole, having been developed as a bratty/asshole kid mentioned above to the well-rounded individiual I am today, who has been bettered by the time I invested in this club. I believe in the product we put out, and think that our time invested in this club is meaningful.

News & Announcements

Brotherhood Wide:
  • A New Plagueis Podcast Has Arrived - Just dropped tonight, which I’ll be promptly listening to, the crew over in Plagueis has delivered a new podcast. I highly recommend you check these out. It’s projects like these that drive my love for the club.
  • A New Deputy Grand Master Was Announced - In case you missed it, Mav has ascended the Throne and with that comes the need for a new Deputy Grand Master. Whether you know him as V’yr or Morgan B. Sorenn, I’m sure V’yr is a familiar face for many of us and you have greatly benefited from his work as Herald. Please join me in congratulating him on taking over as DGM!
  • Herald Is Now Open for Applications - With V’yr moving up, the musical chairs continues and this means there is a need for a new Herald. Open to applications until March 14th, I recommend you don’t wait to apply as this is a competitive position that could close early.
  • New Social Media Tribune Open to Applications - Another big announcement Mav delivered was the opening of a new Tribune position, focused on Social Media. There is a lot of information attached to this announcement, so if you are interested please read the posting carefully. Again, this is open until March 14th but I highly recommend you don’t wait to apply.
  • The Combat Master Announced An Armour System - After long last, your attire and clothes mean something in the ACC. While a short report, the CM put a lot of detail into the new changes surrounding the inclusion of armour into the ACC. Check it out, and make sure to clean up that loadout on your Character Sheet.
  • New Chamber of Justice Staff Announced - After some time considering all the applicants, Jac has decided on a new team of CoJ staff members. While I am aware of several CSP candidates that did apply, unfortunately, we will not have any CSP representation in the Chamber for this term. However, fear not! I did reach out to Jac for some feedback I could provide our membership and the following is direct from the ceiling man himself:

In terms of general tips, this is what I see and I hope it will be helpful:

  1. There is a lot of interest in these positions. I had 23 applications, of which about 15 of the people absolutely could have done a fine job in the slot. So, the competition is high.

  2. That said, diligence pays off. I keep a record of who applies and I compare it year after year. People who applied before and have stuck around all year, didn't get discouraged, and applied again get a +1 in my book (or a +2 if they applied 2 times). I notice that.

  3. Apply for Appeals too. There is a better chance at getting Appeals Panel, and then there is a better chance of jumping from Appeals to Hand the next time.

  4. Answer the "optional" questions. I put that the questions are optional, but they really aren't. That's a first test to see the initiative of applicants.

  5. "I agree with Jac 100% and can't find a flaw with his opinions or the covenant" is not a great answer to the optional questions. Part of the Hand position is being able to play devil's advocate and argue positions you may not entirely agree with. Show your stuff in the application by making a compelling argument.

  6. When the SA courses come out in a few months, take them. I will be putting a very high score on people that have completed all the SA courses next year.

I hope this helps and I'll be glad to answer any other questions!

Battleteam Cup

Deserving a section of its own and the major event of this month: The Battleteam Cup.

For those not familiar, you can see Eli’s announcement here or you can read the important section, quoted here:

Battleteam Cup Format

A four-way Battle Team competition with a twist - points will be awarded to a Battle Team based on individual activity. Points will be accrued by members based on regular activities tracked on the Brotherhood site (see below). This is a pilot (ALPHA Test) for this kind of friendly unit competition and comes with no specific rewards beyond the honor of being recognized as the most active team in Scholae Palatinae.

Point System:
  • Participation in a competition: 5 points (double for DB wide competitions)
  • Organisation of competition by BT member: 5 points
  • Completion of a shadow academy exam: 2 points
  • Gaining a shadow academy degree: 5 points
  • Pendant of Blood: 5 points
  • Scroll of Indoctrination: 10 points

We are just FOUR DAYS from the end of this competition. That means there is still lots of time to get in some last minute points towards your team. Check out the competition page, look for some easy five minute competitions, and pound them out. Points for a simple competition are just as many for a large competition; take advantage of this ;)

If there’s any questions or concerns on this, let me know. Would love to hear from you.

#AskTheNautolan

With the jump from a House of 18 people to a Clan of 49; I decided that it would be a great idea to run an Ask Me Anything session to get to know me better, see what my plans are for the future, and just in general have some fun. If you missed the session this time, no worries! Every report going forward I will use #AskTheNautolan so through in a question at any point and I’ll answer when I’m next available.

Question #1:

Jorm asks: How do you keep your headtacles so shiny and clean, considering they're so sensitive to chemicals?

Answer: Saltwater, one of the few times I gotta go organic :P

Question #2:

Mako asks: Does Raiju prefer a nice slow roasted porg or fish?

Answer: Slow roasted porgs?! Are you serious - I love those little guys. Fish and shrimp all the way

Question #3:

Turel asks: Do you see CSP forming alliances (or rivalries) with any of the other clans in the near future?

The Short Answer: is yes, on both accounts.

The Long Answer: This was actually something that I brought up in my application for Proconsul. When I look around the Brotherhood and I see the success of Arcona and Odan-Urr; I look for what I can learn from their examples. Not everything is going to transfer over. It’d be foolish to think something would work exactly the same somewhere else, there’s so many different factors that contribute to their success - the friendship between units isn’t the only thing.

Yet, it is something that contributes. And it’s something I feel is missing from the club lately. I "grew up" in the DJB during a time where alliances and rivalries were a big deal. It seemed like one of the first uses of the wiki was to put up clan prospectus and “declare” who you were at war with and who you were friends with. While some took more stock in this than others, the friendships and rivalries from this fictional relationships lead to real relationships. It also led to some of my favourite events, helped promote activities that were more focused on the units involved, and created some long-lasting friendships that are still important to me today.

However, there were some negative aspects (especially with the rivalries) we have to be mindful to avoid going forward. I don’t want to recreate the same elitist feeling some clans (or more accurately, individuals) held over others. I don’t want any incidents of bullying to stem from this. And I don’t want people to take things so seriously that if we are at war with another clan - we can’t have meaningful friendships with them.

There’s a fictional side I want to bring back, as well as the positive social aspects that accompanied it. And that is why we are currently in talks to establish an alliance with another clan who is looking for similar results. In terms of specifics, I’ll leave that to Eli and company to announce when there’s a more official establishment ready.

Conclusion

With the above said, that wraps up this report. Expect more announcements and emails as the month goes over, and as we get close to finishing the BT Cup. After which you will see a major clan competition launch. And as always, please continue to keep up the great work guys.

For the Empire,
SBL Raiju Kang
Proconsul of Clan Scholae Palatinae

Congrats on the new job, Raiju, and best wishes for your time as PCON

Dude. I gotta say wow. It takes a lot of courage to open yourself up like this, mad props. Congrats on the position and I'm sure you'll be doing great things for CSP.

Also, Thanks for the podcast shoutout! Love that we're providing something of value to people outside Plagueis as well!

Great report! Looking forward to seeing you in action as pecan!

yes, action would be nice.

Good luck and xongrats! Nice report looking forward to what is in store next for our clan

Great report and good luck! Doesn’t seem like you need it though.

Nice report, Raiju. And yes, to echo a previous comment, it does take a bit of bravery to open yourself up like that. Also, as someone has also earned the badge of honor known as epilepsy...seizures suck! (no "hashtag" from me, though...too old for that crap)

All it takes is an opportunity, and the will to succeed. In all of your time in the Brotherhood, you have never given up. That's very admirable. Not everyone could rise above such challenges.

I know you want to do well. Moreover, I know you can do well as Proconsul. Best of luck, Raiju. I sincerely hope this is where you shine.

Congratulations on the new job!! While I'm not from CSP, I look forward to seeing what happens here. It's also good to see more Canadians taking over :p

Good luck with things to come, I'm certain you'll do great!
