Arcona Fiction Update 001: The Light That Faded

Throne Room

The Citadel, Selen

34ABY

Once, in this room, there had been naught but darkness and fire.

The walls of smooth sable stone and the enormous onyx pillars held seamless lies, a castle of glass, beautiful and deadly. It was fragile, calm, quiet. Outside the sentinel doors, men and women bled and cried under iron fists. But not here. Here only the flames breathed, whispering secrets of timeless knowledge and strength.

Emptiness and hunger lingered on the crackle-soft air like the last note of a hallowed harmony. They were the silence beneath the serenity, the poison under the skin. This chamber was a voracious thing, its halls demanding constant sacrifices to offer their blood, their power, and their honor before its cold, serpent-clad throne. And those demands, over and over, had been answered. A succession of men and women had knelt before that seat, swearing life and limb willingly, gladly, swearing themselves to be brethren in shadow.

Now...there was all that and more.

Certainly, the throne room held darkness and blood in its stones, built of them, kin to them — but so too was it now suffused with the first touches of warmth and light. Braziers burning gold, blue, crimson, and violet lined the walls, the main walkway, the empty spaces of the room. Wreaths of fresh foliage coiled up all the pillars, native vines and flowers carefully arranged. At the far end of the chamber, an immense set of steps led up to the regal dias backed by leaping white flames that clawed the air and cast shadows far and wide. Before the flames, atop the dias, rested that throne of coiled serpents and sharp edges.

And in its seat reclined a silver-haired woman, face masked and features gentle.

On either side of the regal seat, lining the steps, were more figures, some old, some young, but all with ancient eyes. They numbered among Clan's greatest, paragons and champions, shadows written into their hearts so deeply that they bled black like ink. Timeros, Strategos, Legorii, Baxir, Marick — and all, Arconae. Only a few were absent yet, those that still lived, and they not long away. Further down, at the dias' base, stood a multitude of people, rainbows of skin and feature, riots of dark and light mingling into a sea of gray. Here, a hodgepodge family of their own naming, there pairs of small team leaders or a squad of elite pilots and a gaggle of newly-robed students, lively and lonesome faces alike present — and all, Arconans. A low hum of chatter raced through the chamber from their many-throated voices, but all fell quiet when the blindfolded Miraluka on the throne stood.

Atyiru Caesura Entar smiled.

"My friends," she greeted. "We face much. Attacks on our home fended off at last, and yet a larger threat still imposes. We all felt New Tython's loss as we would our own home's, as is the way of the Force. The threads of our fates are twining and we must direct their pattern before we find ourselves entrapped. We must be as we always are, our own makers, our own triumph. To do so we must change again...as we have changed before."

A pause. The former hushed air of casualness was gone. In its place, tension reigned, a hundred lungs still in a hundred chests. The Shadow Lady raised her hands and gestured at the grand hall's entrance as a cadre of Summit guardsmen pulled open the doors.

Advent of the New Order

Light is limited, Darkness is infinite

Where do we go from here?

This was the question the Chapter One: a New Order fiction update left us to answer. What does all this mean for us? As the clan fiction above will indicate...quite a bit.

If you have not read the New Order fiction yet, I encourage you to follow the link above and do so. It’s only about nine pages, and it’s very good. Plus, it’s kind of important. But, for the sake of this report, I’ve included Sarin’s own TL;DR:

  1. Epilogue: Val files his final report and highlights the evolution of the Dark Brotherhood over the past two years. Loyalists, Mercenaries, Inquisitors, genocide, and the eradication of the Jedi. It's like Sithmas.
  2. V'yr is on the run.
  3. Probably because she was tortured in this flashback.
  4. The Invasion of New Tython has begun.
  5. The Grand Master gives crazy new meaning.
  6. Farewell to our Undesirable and beloved Solari.
  7. New Tython is razed.
  8. Clan Odan Urr looks forward to the future and towards Resistance.

While most general feelings about the fiction itself and Arcona’s development as a grayer (gayer? haaaa) Clan over the last year were evident, we wanted to be sure that we were hearing thoughts and feelings straight from each of you — who else, after all, but all you Arconans could shape Arcona’s future?

To that end, we released a poll questioning your feelings on Arcona’s current alignment, our alliance with Odan-Urr, your loyalties, and your feelings on Pravus’ actions, the latter three all in-character (OOC, we love the GM and his fiction...Pravus though, huh :p). We looked long and hard over these results before brainstorming the beginnings of our next fictional move (even though much thought seemed to be that we were “already committed” in that relationship with COU. Time to change the Facebook status, it seems).

Results!

Those results, then, are reflected in the above fiction and in the (hopefully) nifty graphs. Arcona stands now as likely the grayest Clan in the Brotherhood, though still a paragon of darkness in its blood and bones, despite the unofficial light-sider at its head. What you’ll likely see going forward is an emphasis on that dichotomy. We’ll explore the resurgence of Arcona’s deeply rooted Dark identity and how that’s going to mesh with both the new movements of its members who retreat from the Dark Side’s influence and balance themselves with some of the Light, and with the Jedi’s expulsion bringing Arcona’s ties with Odan-Urr and clash with the Grand Master to the forefront.

Most of the Clan, in character, either doesn’t care about the Jedi or such Force alignments or favors our lightie friends — it’s very much a “nobody picks on my little brother but me” sort of mindset. We might not necessarily like them, but they’re our allies, and we protect and prize our own above all else. Arcona — and its inherent family — first. Then Arconan interests. Then ideology, if any. And theeeen the pet rancor. And then maybe the Council. Yeah.

Of course, some of y’all are IC, “darkity sable dark dark evil black, give me a stabbin’ knife for the filthy lighties” and that’s okay too. I’m honestly really excited to see some of the radical players interact with the more neutral ones, and those who support Pravus interacting with those who reeeeally hate that guy.

Whatever your alignment or loyalties, Atty loves you all equally. And so do I. But in character, when Arcona is sick of your sithspit, it might be time to reconsider your life choices—

“My Lord, is this not an invasion?” The Dark Lord of the Sith’s hand grasped Aabsdu’s throat and lifted the man off of the ground.

“This is genocide. The Harakoans, the Jedi, the filthy mongrels that have somehow evaded evolution. Destroy them all.”

“But, there will be sympathizers, powerful ones, Arcona, others….,” Aabsdu voice weakly responded.

“I will drag the Consul of Arcona through the streets of Estle City and then execute her before her own people. Then they, and everyone else will understand the true nature of the Dark Brotherhood.”

The Grand Master cast the Master at Arms aside and walked towards his destiny.

...uuuh. Unless...you’re possibly insane and hellbent on purging all resistance and ushering in your vision of the new world order. Then you might not care. Oh, funsies. (Disclaimer that no Arconan would know IC that this happened).

So that, my dears, is where we stand: some of us at a crossroads, some of us with our path clearer than ever before us, but all of us with choices to make. Light, Dark, and Gray alike. Our friends have been attacked, and we may well be next if we do not bow to the Grand Master’s will — and even then, Arcona’s safety is precious guaranteed. Where, my friends, do we go from here?

I say we go forward. Stand opposed. Stand with those who stand with us and either correct or crush those who stand in our way.

What do you say?

And so with that thought at last, I leave a message to our brothers and sisters of Clan Odan-Urr, our allies, and everyone and anyone else across the Brotherhood who stands now unsure: look to the sky, for one day soon, the dawn will come.

The Brotherhood Reborn

Long before Episode VII’s premiere, we all knew we were going into a changing world. New-canon, undesirables, fleet and possession shifts, and so on. At last, the Grand Master and Dark Council have launched another fiction update and officially moved our DB timeline back in order to match new canon.

While I HIGHLY SUGGEST by which I mean you better all read every word or else you check out this momentous report, I’ll be presenting some highlights and summaries for you lovelies. Of particular note is the Project Road Map that will serve as our loose club-wide schedule for the year.

alt txt

Timeline Update:

Slagar put out a wiki report explaining further, but in short our timeline is moving back five years to 34 ABY. What’s that mean for you? It means that if you have a timeline of events for your character (or their age) all you need to do is subtract five from the date. For instance, Atty was originally born in 11 ABY, making her 28 years old as of our previous timeline in 39 ABY. In order to keep this age, I moved her birthyear back to 6 ABY (minus five, roll with me here. It’s okay, David, it’s not bad math). If you don’t move that year back, for instance, your character may be five years younger on their Character sheet, wiki, whatever, and so too for the associated events in their history.

This could be a good time to reconsider or retcon things in your character's timeline if you so wish. Again, for instance, I get to figure out what to do with Atty’s whole history in a Jedi Order that no longer exists /sob. But, that means some exciting opportunity for writing, and can bring you in line with canon if you so choose. Note, though, that no cops in Inqy robes are gonna come and break down your door all darkity sable black-like if you don’t Slags also mentioned in his report that articles and such that keep their legends material will just be marked as such.

As for the rest, Vic/Terran and the summit have made efforts in updating and publishing Arcona’s timeline in accordance with the new dates. We’ll be updating all other events and history to match the new timeline for you on our wikis. Volunteers should contact Terran if you want to help out with those edits (woohoo, project points)!

Possessions:

”The Dark Council and I sat down and discussed our priorities for the upcoming six months and revised the above graphic. As you can see, it is our singular purpose to complete possessions.”

If you follow the outline laid out in the report and project calendar, the target release date for Possessions is sometime this coming July (2016) . It also states (at the top) that the Great Jedi War will occur only after Possessions has been implemented.

More on the War in a few (down, Skarbie), but first, check out this snapshot of what Possessions will look like! It’s all super exciting, especially between previews we get here and from the Voice and Herald. Look out come summertime!

Fiction Updates (aka the bomb(s) that got dropped):

Sarin is looking to publish continual fictional updates going into this next year to move along our delicious Brotherhood story and take in all our New Order goodness. If you’re curious about how the GM and Voice staff go about making DB-wide plot updates, check out Sarin’s awesome email he sent breaking down the most recent fiction release and its behind the scenes process!

Furthermore, judging by the project chart, it looks like we should learn more about the “new” Antei sometime around May or June! Oh my! The DC can finally get off their ships.

End Goal:

The Project Roadmap is broken down into four categories: Fiction, Gaming, Graphics, and Systems, all of which point to a “Desired State” for the DJB. As Sarin puts it, the end goal for this winter is to have a “modernized DJB utilizing updated website, new systems, and operating under clear and concise vision driven by membership feedback.”

That last part is important. All these changes come from your feedback. Now, everyone has unique opinions to some degree, and the results we receive may not always be those that you wanted — but Sarin and Mav, and all of your Arconan Summit too, care about your voices. If you’re curious about anything or have topics to question or concerns to bring to bear, email the Summit and we’ll help you figure out the best way to deliver that feedback to the Council.

Atty, Atty, Atty. Hey, listen. I heard “War:”

alt txt

No, Wally. Not yet. However, it’s clear that a Great Jedi War is indeed on the horizon. The tentative date looks to be sometime in August, but it could be pushed back to the fall based on Possessions progression, as that’s still the first priority.

What you know though, Arconans, is that while I say “not yet,” there is still a War to come. And what, my friends, do we do best, if not War? We’re the First Clan. We’re Arcona. In our name is a victory cry all its own.

We have many months ahead of us, loves, and much to prepare. The rest of the Summit and I are discussing plans for training and for operations and events that can lend to as much. When the battle does finally come, we’re going to be ready. We’re going to write, game, and graphic our hearts out, side by side. Need a proofer at three in the morning? Done. Hangout in the small hours while we open up Paint and make stick figures of our characters mowing down the GM’s Inqys? Done. Video tutorials and resources? Done. Ask, make suggestions, tell us how you learn. We’ll work with you and together we will all make this great. As great as the last three victories — no, better. You’ve just got to come with us.

I’m calling to you now. Will you answer?

Grand Master’s Invitation Tournament - Finale and Conclusion

alt txt

Totally how that match ended.

The Grand Master’s Invitational Tournament has concluded at last. In my last report, you cheered for Timmy and Turel both as the finalist competitors, and now the results have been decided. Please join me in cheering for our dear friend and the Grand Master’s Champion, Turel Sorenn. You can check out the final match, its results, and the concluding fiction in Wally’s latest, awesome report. Go on over, read up, and support Wally, Timmy, and Turel.

I’d like to say several things: first, that I am so proud of Tim for representing Arcona and for all his skill and grace, and congratulate him for his second place finish. Second, I want to say thank you to Turel for his incredible sportsmanship and loyalty, and to say how proud I am for his efforts. And lastly, to give a cheer to everyone who participated in the Tournament, everyone who graded its matches, and our dear Combat Master for its organization. Well done, all.

FIST Appointment

As you all well know, Valhavoc recently retired as FIST — for which he was deservingly awarded a Silver Sash — and applications for the position were opened. I’m pleased to congratulate one of our own former brothers, Cethgus Tiberius Entar as the new FIST of the Brotherhood. I want to give him a shout out for already contacting the other Consuls and I personally to see what he can do for each Clan in the gaming community, but also for contacting us about projects and possible gaming expansion. It’s going to be a good reign. Congrats, Stubert!

Check out his first report here.

Day of Jac Awards

The Day of Jac, first celebrated last year, has come and past. In accordance with the DB-offical holiday, Sarin gave out several sacramentals to the non-leader types around the club who show positivity, activity, and helpfulness. Go take a look and congratulate them.

God, Donny, you can’t just ask people why they’re not doing things.

...oh wait, you can. Because that’s what I hired you for! I’ll just be here crying. :P

In seriousness, though, I hope you’ll all join me in welcoming Donny/Uji/that dead Kaleesh guy as your new Proconsul. It’s been...an active and busy couple weeks on the summit, heh, with more to come as we settle and shift. It is all, though, for the good, and most importantly, for your good as members. Our jobs are to provide for you all and reward you while we all have fun.

And kill Pravus supporters. I mean, what?. Rainbows. Sunshine. What’s that? A convenient section about an event to distract from that sentiment? Yeah, we had one! Over there!

Fall of Perdition - Over!

As you’ll recall, our Febuary Clan event, Fall of Perdition, has completed and the results will be finalized shortly this evening, with a fiction update soon(™) thereafter. In the meantime, sit back, relax, and take a breather. We’ve had continuous events for several months now, and have one yet planned for April that you’ll be hearing about soon.

But for now? Breathe. Enjoy some competitions if you’re so inclined — write about your reaction to the fiction update, partner up for a story with someone from the other House, go a little Dungeons and Dragons, or get some gaming in. Whatever you want to do, enjoy the free time, come chat with us, join some hangouts — the world’s your limit.

After that, we start the long road preparing for war. ;P

Ask the…drumroll...Gold Team

I called around for suggestions on a new CON/PCON team name, and someone — Kiwi — suggested “Gold Team” because Atty and Uji is “AU” like the element gold on the period table (Au)...and also because Pokemon is goddamn awesome and Pokemon Gold was a great game. Speaking of, this is so the new banner for this section:

alt txt

Thank you, Irfan, for the graphic.

Mako asks, #asktheatty With the recent fiction update how with Atty (the character) and Clan Arcona respond to the actions of the Grand Master?

  • Atty: See above. And below. No, seriously. It’s so on.
  • alt txt

Skar asks, #asktheatty so with the purge of the jedi and there homeworld how would attys first reaction to the news be

  • Atty: Expecting that Atty, as an aware Force-user, especially as a Miraluka, and as a highly trained Empath, would reeeeally feel it when the planet and all its inhabitants got bombed into slag...she’d probably fall to her knees and just go into shock that’d need medical treatment, or collapse in a wailing, grieving puddle. After recovering from that...she’d keep her sorrow there but in-check and go about doing what she could to hold it all together: make sure all her people were okay, that Arcona was okay and secure, give orders to be under alert, etc, and then go meditate in hopes of being able to sense if her compatriots were still alive or not and what was coming for them. After she’d done all that, she’d be calmer, collected. Prayers for those lost and those still living. And then...it’s time to act. Make a plan and work toward it. For her, that plan is going to be protecting and saving everyone she can — innocents, Jedi, Dark Jed, Inquisitors, whoever you are. She doesn’t want more death. She wants peace for all, forgiveness for Pravus and his cohorts, and safety for those he threatens or may threaten. Unfortunately, she knows some violence may be required to do it, but she’ll be damned if she doesn’t try to preserve as much life as possible before anything else first.

*Celevon asks, #AskTheAtty How long until Atty starts trying to convince Uji into 'brightening' his wardrobe? I've also got a mental picture of her trying to dye his hair into rainbows

  • Atty: Way ahead of you.
  • Uji: They aren't that dark :P And she chose them already.

Len asks, #asktheatty Door #1 or Door #2

  • Atty: ...yes.

Sam asks, #asktheatty can we make the flames in the Throne Room blue again?

  • Atty: No. Unless they’re blue and purple, red, orange, yellow, and green. Oooh, or white. Let’s just go with white. I like that. White flames for the Shadow Lady.
  • Uji: White flames would be pretty awesome actually :P I approve of this concept

Turel asks, #asktheAtty What will Arcona do if Tarentum sides with the Inquisition as their allies in Plagueis have?

  • Atty: ...not...care? :P Arcona’s stance is very autonomous in most things. Arconans, en masse, put Arcona over other ideologies or the Force, and that means Dark, Light, right, wrong, profit, failure, etc. It’s part of why they’d maintain alliances with both light and dark Clans. What Tarentum practices is of little concern to them, no more than what Plagueis practices or does...provided that it doesn’t impede Arcona. If Tarentum, in allying with the Inquisition, directly started to oppose Arcona, we would react as we would with any other enemy. It’s my sincere hope that doesn’t happen, because I love my darling Tarenti (<3), but it’s what would most likely go down in-character. Taking account of the Clan as a whole and not for any one individual perspective, it’s essentially: you do you and we’ll do us and we’ll benefit each other mutually; you move against us...you get in line for the block.

One of our new returns, Aryelline, also had a question. Not so much an #asktheatty, but a query nonetheless, one that I’d heard from several other returning members and in general. I thought I’d take some time to address it. So! Ary sort of asks, what’s happened over the last couple years and recently? Is there a summary anywhere?

  • Atty: The best resources we have at the moment for this sort of question are wiki pages that are completed (which can be sparse, even Brotherhood-wide) and the actual fictions of events themselves. “Go read up” is probably your most straightforward answer, if an often overwhelming one. I do insist that any of you who haven’t read it yet read the GM’s release, linked above. For the rest, and some context, Here is a rough summary:

The Eleventh Great Jedi War culminated in the end of the Dark Crusade and its epilogue, Fading Light, that was the Brotherhood's two year campaign to claim more territories and retake the old Sith Worlds from the One Sith who more or less "baited" them into doing so. We find out that their leader, Esoteric, was actually an agent of Pravus and the leader of his Nephilihm, Damon Nix. Pravus had been controlling the One Sith the whole time and used them to weaken and fracture all the Clans and Houses while throwing fodder out for them to saber to pieces. As such, the One Sith no longer exist as a group, having been largely decimated. Also, the Dark Council claimed all the Sith Worlds that the Clans and Houses won, stripping their resources and artifacts for themselves. During a break in the Crusade, Arcona experienced several events, including a small civil war, several infamous tests from our then-Consul, and some rescue operations.

GJWXI saw the Clans and Houses forming fractured alliances around several powerful figures, including then-Grand Master Muz, who was on a quest for immortality and unity, former Grand Master Jac, and Esoteric himself. In the end, Muz burned up Antei and Pravus took power. Everyone limped home to lick their wounds.

Arcona started rebuilding Estle City from the events of the "Siege of Selen" (see: Operation: Revival, Operation: Legacy, Operation: Resurgence) that occupied them just before the War. Atyiru took power as Consul, and things got a bit divided and then there were more rainbows. Lots of rainbows. We went to help Clan Odan-Urr (see: Tides of Change) and became close friends with them over the last year while maintaining our quiet alliance with Tarentum.

A couple months ago, Pravus and his supporters on the Dark Council began a purge of Undesirables, those not Sith or Human (reflecting DB revamps and the EU wipe as we moved towards New Canon). This included destroying the Obelisk and Krath orders and hunting down and killing any filthy aliens on the death (non canon) list in the Academy ranks. Those species in the Clans (grandfathered in) are arguably still targets and more untrustworthy. The Inquisitorious (fiction society) were in large part agents of this purge, similar to secret Nazis, working as Pravus' eyes and ears around the Brotherhood and under the direction of the Voice, Evant. Some among the Clans supported the purges, while others did not, and others were neutral (see: Celebration event and Run Ons). Arcona is largely neutral or opposed to them, with a handful of supporters here and there.

Culturally, the Clan has opened up a lot, more Gray-aligned while still keeping its Dark routes. We have both Dark- and Light-aligned allies and are led by a sunshiney - if still somewhat vicious - Miraluka, herself undesirable, and are rather inclusive of Mundanes. We may or may not now have a Prison of Elders (hi Brae :p). Politically and economically, Selen is largely unchanged, though Ol'Val has been growing as a criminal element and Galeres has more or less abandoned Eldar and incorporated into the military. SCEPTER is completely gone, destroyed by the One Sith remnant group who attacked us in the past, called Perdition (see: Fall of SCEPTER). Perdition hung around in the Dajorra system afterward and had recently captured and indoctrinated our Rollmaster, and still intended to pester us. We decided it was time to put a stop to it and eradicated them at last (see: Fall of Perdition).

No sooner than this ended, however, did we all feel the destruction of New Tython, many systems away...and what awaits us next, as Pravus' reign continues and his grip tightens, only we can decide.

Hopefully, that’ll clear up some lingering confusion!

Kant asks, #asktheatty Shadow Throne vs. Iron Throne: GJW 2016. Awesome idea or awesome-est idea?

  • Atty: alt txt Awesomeest.
  • Uji: Tyranny has often had its place in both history and fiction. Thankfully much like most insane dictators, Pravus will show his weaknesses soon enough. Never know. Maybe he’s just suffering from a few bad nights with the wrong call girls.

A Brocon Moment

I kid you not, I honestly think Turel was more excited about Uji getting PCON than Uji was. Or I was.

Regardless, in honor of that bromance and a hopeful age of broconhood and broness between our Clans, I give you all this, by request. :P
